This guy must be looking at Josh Jenkins' career thinking if someone like that can make a career out of soft Joe the Goose goals out the back of packs why couldnt't I? Even when he kicked 5 for GWS from recollection a good 3 of them were from softies over the back of the pack.

Our team needs to be going in this exact opposite direct of this type of player right now.

Jack Buller just kicked 5 in the VFL magoos and we're largely comfortable he wasn't wanted for our list, this guy going back and performing well in a shitty regional league after training as a professional athlete isn't really testament that he should be back in the AFL environment.

Difference was that Jenkins wasn't mentally weak and a tall used his size, which Brander never did

I'm just surprised that we didn't pick up on the issue prior to the draft.
Its unbelievable really. WCE seduced by Branders physical prowess and Geelong grammar pedigree yet it was apparent right from the get go that he lacked the competitive instinct to succeed.

The exact opposite of Allen who was already a co-captain/leader and u/18 mvp winner. Imagine how we'd all be feeling had we also missed Allen as a consequence of drafting Brander?

We've seen the consequences of drafting brander by missing kelly, then selling the farm for him a few years later.

I was in the mould of imzamam al huq.

Boundary or nothing.

I was annoyed when we overlooked Kelly on our second pick. Some justified that we would have not got Allen.
The facts are that Allen won the Larke medal for the best in the under 18's and we were not going to pick him except that he was overlooked.
How can you not pick the best Kpf except if you are the Eagles.
How did that work out Two Kpf who couldn't get game time because both kennedy and Darling still at their prime.
Allen overtook Brander and the Eagles found roles for him to develop him.
Unfortunately they couldn't develop Brander and got nothing for him and overpaid to get Kelly back.
Plain dumb. and were paying for it and it was never Kelly's fault it was this botched up draft.

Brander was forever tarnished with the position he was drafted in.

Had he been a late pick or rookie, the club would still be persisting with him.

He was given 4 years.

When his output was lined up against players like Jamieson, Rotham and H Edwards (who have been no more effective so far) and will play for 5 or more seasons, you need to wonder if the decision to cut was more about removing part of the "what if" from the Kelly debacle.

His 2021 form of 15 disposal avge, and 5 marks a game was sound for a developing 195cm player.

He'd probably be Top 10 in our B&F now with that output.

We offered him a contract. He refused to sign it.

Someone recently shared the story that he got blasted for bitching out of a contest and he told his manager to withdraw from contract extension negotiations.

His career ending was of his own doing.

It was reported in August that year that a contract had not been put to him.

More a case that he did not enter contract extension discussions. I'm going on memory here. He had made up his mind to leave. We would have been reaching out to his manager to sit down for a chat and it never progressed from there.

I will say, for all the talk of credits crew and not playing the youth, we've fairly consistently prioritised games into our top draft picks as early as Sheed and Duggan. Venables got games and was allowed time to find his feet.

Brander could have been left in the twos to hone his craft, but rightly or wrongly we prioritised games at the top level for him and thus the shoehorning him into different positions because we were stocked for tall forwards. Allen also burst onto the scene with greater competitive spirit and flexibility in roles, which left one less key position for Brander to fill.

He had enough traits to become serviceable but his expectation and patience didn't align with where we were at. I hope it's been a humbling experience for him.

I also hope he's finally living his dream of being third forward in country footy, supporting his key position teammates Talented Teenager and Big Fat Bloke Who Belts People.

Still gutted we missed out on Big Fat Bloke Who Belts People in the MSD because the ****ing useless medical staff wouldn't put anyone else on the LTI list...
