OK. This 'beating the best- losing to the worst' syndrome isn't new. Last year, we lost 6 out of 8 games into which we went in clear favourites. We won 5 out of 7 of the games of which we were clear underdogs at the time. (there has been good money to be made
)
BUT!
I have to disagree with this year. This is the the most even the competition has ever been. Most teams can beat any other team on any given day. Upsets happen. From our results, you can't really say that it has been HUGE fluctiations in our performances;
St Kilda were fired up and raring to go in order to prove themselves as the real deal. AND, round one is rarely a good indicator for ANY team:- not necesarily inconsistent form.
Richmond: We played well, effective tactics- defeated them fair and square- we capatilised when they fell apart
Collingwood: their performances since that loss have proven that they are a team to be reckoned with- defeating the likes of Carlton, pushing Essendon etc. We had a shocking night- it happens.
Brisbane: We simply outplayed them and were the better team on the day- they don't play well in Melnourne- not THAT much of a suprise.
Hawthorn: - In form team of the comp- we aren't- no inconsistencies here
Port: Second most inform team of the comp- we were playing with a list decemated by injuries, suspensions (inculding Darcy) and controvercies concerning B&F counts- if we had of won it would have proven the inconsistent theory- and would have been a miracle...
Melbourne: Jury is still out on them, as they have only managed to primarily defeat last years celler dwellers. They played into our hands.... we won. Not exactly a sign of inconsistentcy.
Granted, a few suprise performances, but overall, just the result on the day, against similarly matched teams.
