I always thought Caven was the other possible. As Mike Sheehan said at the time "One thing stood between Adelaide and the premiership and that was Wayne Carey and Caven took him out of the game. That is why I would have given the norm smith to him" - or words to that effect.

Didn't our Wayne :p kick 1.4 or 1.5 in that game? He hit the post from 5 metres out on the run with one and missed that easy set shot late in the third quarter.

Caven did well on him, but by no means 'took him out of the game'.

It wasn't a sentiment as such, just stating a point that some people are prone to give sentimental type votes.
With 7 judges, the chance of that happening is increased. Definitely a case of more means less (quality) with too many judges.

As far as Burgoyne and John**** both receiving votes, in the so called old days, most teams pretty well put their "best" players in the centre, and their focus was not so much looking out for their opponent, but if they were good enough, it was to create drive.
They could easily be their respective teams best on the night.
As Macca19 has said, it was a different situation on Saturday night.

An interesting question...

Did the judges know their individual votes would be published?

If so, does this effect how they vote? Does public scrutiny result in "politically correct" voting?

If there are only 1 set of votes to be give like the umpires do with the Brownlow, then it would best to reduce the number of voters to 3 IMO.
Fair enough - seems like its seven voters so every media gets a piece fo the pie.

Geez, imagine if juries used a blind voting system.....you'd get some amazing decisions.

Surely the umpires should decide. Same as the Brownlow

I think its dumb the same idiots in the media get to make the decision all the time.

The only difficulty with that would be that it'd give away the 3 votes for the Brownlow. Just pick a couple of reasonably bright ex-players to award it.

You could get ex-players who have played for both teams - Ian Downsborough & Brett Chalmers, except they're not the brightest going around! ;) Perhaps we could just give Cornesy the gong to test who he actually follows these days, but then again, he never seems to turn up to these games as his band gigs are more imprortant...
Whatever, 7 voters is overkill IMO.

Why didn't I pick that he would be the good lookin' one!! :D

Yeah, I know the one you're talking about.

The 'All-Stars' have done a lot of gigs down at Globe Derby trots - they're first class.
