They played two practise matches in the weeks prior to round 0 and the application was even more questionable.
Yes with many patronising "lol they're just dusting off the cobwebs" posts towards anyone with the temerity to question how poor we looked.

I don't think it's application, I actually thought we had a crack but our sloppiness in transition kills us. If it wasn't for effort, we could have lost by 50 plus
I think running and concentration are part of application too though, not just contesting. We weren't switched on during the first quarter or commencement of the last.

The main reason we lost last week was Cam Z messing up the first half. His missed kicks (to players and on goal) and poor defense cost us seven or eight goals!!! (Depending on whether you blame him for Naughton's first or not, probably other players just as responsible for that tho.) Putting aside all the other stuff, half as many errors from Cam and we win that game.

Without all that he would have been one our best players too. If not BOG.
Jy was just as good/bad possibly worse
His fwds were open He butchered it
Anyone can see that
As for Cam when are we getting on Larkeys case? I take your point about running backwards The Cam kick you bagged Larkey had the ball He tried to do some fancy off the side of the boot kick and missed from 5 yards That was v disappointing

I cannot recall if Laidly ever took this approach.
JYD dropped Swallow early in his career and it was the making of him as a player. You are right though, it rarely happens which is a crying shame.

Scott in particular 'backed his boys in' which is cute but is where the rot began imo.

As a club we do not have a culture of accountability for repeated poor performances, more one of "they'll bounce back" which is appropriate at times but can also ruin players. (Also, if they're bouncing back to a standard 4/10 performance who gives a shit)

Lindsay Thomas, and many many others, would have benefitted massively from being dropped a few times during down periods.

Disagree.

We lost the game cos our midfield yet again failed to defend at critical times. Go back and watch the 1st 3 minutes of the last quarter. Game was there to be won. Our midfield allowed the dogs midfield to get the ball without pressure, stream forward and kick easy goals.

And it happened throughout match too.

Been happening for ages. And being young ain’t an excuse. Doesn’t take talent to chase, tackle or pressure.

But our lazy mids fail every week.

Go watch the good teams midfields when they don’t have the ball. Then watch ours. It’s a disgrace!

Head on a pike is fine.

It is not how we operate, I cannot recall Scott ever employing this as a thing, I cannot recall if Laidly ever took this approach.
Might work might not, I legit don't think an individual player is the difference.

I get the idea but it just wont be something we do.

I'd give him a series of KPIs to work on the VFL for two or three weeks. Specifically around pushing into defense and bringing other players into the game.

Zurhaar has the potential to be a much better player than what he shows now, specifically if he does the hard work someone like Weddle does. Not the same player obviously but if he worked as hard and as diligently as Weddle he'd be an elite player in the comp.

Collective mindset, lack of belief and lack of confidence.

We are mentally soft and it makes the required effort look like a million miles away.

I agree and that goal Dale kicked in the first is a classic example.

Blue juice said it best in a lyric of theirs which I will paraphase:

We've been down so long we've gotten comfortable on our knees.

you can say it was Cam all you like, we would take the ball at nearly any point on the ground and the bloke with the ball would look up to 17 other guys not moving an inch. We want the easy options. It is why we are stagnant, it is why we kick the ball long down the line, it is why our preferred forward entry is one of kick it on their heads or try and get it over the back. It sticks out like dogs nuts when anyone does something different.

Every team knows they turn up the heat and we crumble. The dogs did it twice, once at the end of the first into the start of the second and we conceded 4 goals. again at the start of the fourth and we conceded 3 goals.

I expect that will be almost exactly how Sunday plays out. there will come a point where Melbourne need to step it up and we won't go with them, they will burst on a score that is enough to break us and it'll be the game.

I have no belief we can counter that because why would I believe in a thing I haven't seen in half a decade?

I think a few kicks up the arse would do it.

Get angry about something. Anyway i made my point about Zurhaar. I don't want to go on about it cos I think if he did this stuff and was mentally disciplined he could be an absolutely elite player in this comp.

I'll leave you with another song with lyrics that should be tattooed inside our players eyeballs...

Bard dropped Jy a few weeks before we sacked him. Jy hasn't really looked back since.

there are probably hundreds of instances a games where it is on display. this is my point about in not being on one player.

Get angry about something.
I do honestly wonder why they aren't. AFL careers are exceptionally short and they are wasting theirs not being brave enough to be successful. To a man they should be furious with where we are and how long we have been there.

Their best song IMO and absolutely an anthem. I listen to it often.

Watch a replay carefully and watch every little detail around what happens. Jy was heaps better. He shanked a couple of kicks and should have had that shot instead of passing to Larkey in the first 90 seconds (but if Larkey had attacked the ball instead of backing away it would have a shot on goal from 20 out directly in front,) but he chased, tackled, blocked and worked hard all game. Multiple repeat efforts from one end of the ground to other both ways etc etc

I don't remember him standing idly by while his opponent ran past him to get hands from a free for an easy shot on goal.

There were multiple times Larkey didn't run at or attack the ball. Its a problem across the side tho and has been for the time we're shit. So many poor kicks/turnovers are because players receiving the ball stand flat footed and wait for it to come to them instead of attacking the ball and making it happen. There's a lesson there for the whole side. Its also a huge issue for Larkey's game tho.

But I'll let him off with that point tho. The kick went to the pocket instead of in front of goal and Larkey ran flat out to get it. He ended up in a position where he was on a really tight angle with momentum, moving away from the goal cos the kick was poor and went to the pocket instead of in front of goal. It was his only option. If he'd stopped or moved back inside he'd have been caught.

If I had the time I'd make a gif or pic and put dots and lines on it to reinforce my point.

...

Okay i just watched a replay of that Larkey behind...

It was a great piece of play and Cam worked really hard and probably did as well as he could with the kick. It still got to Larkey but could have been worked better. CZ should have hit LDU who was on his own between the square and the forward 50 arc with a short kick instead of going for the long bomb inside 50. Then LDU could have run in and had a shot or hit Larkey who had space to move into in front of goal.

Maybe I'm being a bit harsh on Cam but that better decision would have seen a better outcome for us.

But aside from that it was good play. We won the ball from stoppage with some well hidden throws (lol) and a good step from Jy and the speed and how we broke them open was almost Hawthorn like. Bobby Jr, Luke Parker and Cam all worked really hard to make it happen but that last kick was just the wrong option.

(That's also the shit we need to fix if we expect LDU to stay.)

Yeah we need to get angry on field.

I remember Noble crapping on about how he preferred the players to be focused on what they were doing rather than angry cos he thought it wasted energy.

He was wrong.

If it were a full strength bulldogs side, I'd be more inclined to agree.

But they weren't. We lost to a VFL side.

A VFL SIDE.

Full strength, we lose this game by 10 goals +.

Under Ratten in 2023 we had 5 or 6 'honorable' losses by very close margins. A couple last year too.

It can't be the pass mark anymore.
A premiership contender almost lost to a "VFL side".

A premiership contender almost lost to a "VFL side".

This VFL side bullshit. They were missing 6. Not 23. If Weightman plays, does Van der Meer kick 3? If Treloar plays, does Freijah or Kennedy have those games? Does Johanesson even get back in? Where’s Ugle-Hagen’s head at?

Bontempelli and Jones are the important ones.

It's not me who says they are. But they are. 5th in the betting markets.

Just admit you overreacted and unfair labelled a team missing 4 players, a "VFL team".

Mate they were missing three of their top 5 in the B&F, including their best key back, plus their best small forward, and a gun KPF.

It'd be the equivalent of us missing LDU, Sheez, Curtis, Chom and Larkey. With an injury cloud over Simpkin or Powell.

You and a bunch of dero's who put $10 on them to win the flag, you mean.

It doesn't really tell you anything other than they have loads of fans who gamble a bit. (Possibly not using their own money, maybe government support).
