Wellingham - Where does he sit??

Wellingham is a good player, don't get me wrong but players like Sidebottom, Beams, Reid are far more crucial to ensure we keep moving forward, I wouldn't be too fussed if he left.

I reckon a lot of posters and Pies fans generally massively over-rate the bottom half of our 22.

Pendles, Swan, Thomas and Ball are head and shoulders above the next tear of Wellers, Sidey, Beams and Blair (and now Clarke too I guess, he's the same age as Wellers).

Of the four (Wellers, Beams, Blair and Rusty), Wellers is the oldest, as 24, with Beams and Blair a full 2 years younger and Rusty a year younger than that. In other words it is entirely possible that Wellers has found his level and that one or more of the other three might step up significantly and go past him.

We NEED one or more of that group; Wellers, Clrake, Beams, Rusty, Blair, Fasalo, Josh Thomas, etc to step up and be in that Swan, Pendles, Thomas and Ball group, to be 25-35 posession players as opposed to 25-25 posession players, to be game-breakers in thier own right, not just once a season but most weeks.

Seems to me that this season at least Rusty and Blair have got the drop on Wellers and Beams, and have had much better pre-seasons, injury and drama free, but, IMO, they are also the pair with less natrual "flair" than Wellers and Beams, so it will be interesting to see by the end of the year who has managed to genuinely step up to the Pendles, Thomas and Co level.

They will need to improve, because blokes like Seedsman, Young, Fasalo, Elliot, Yagmoor, and so on won't just be sitting on thier hands, and every year a new batch of kids will come through, and every year some will put thier hands up.

Many posters touch on Wellingham's great attribute, hitting packs at speed, controlling the ball and doing something spectacular with it, but ignore the reverse of this coin. Players who do this often look silly when the bounce of the ball does not favour them, as it often doesn't. A few like Judd or Swan are also great receivers and are therefore far better players. Most are not, and few have the Wellingham ability. Beams is a different kind of player. He is not an alternative Wellingham, any more than Sidebottom is. We need all of these kinds of player to be a top side. We also need them all playing well, and therein lies the challenge.

Re: Wellingham. Where does he sit??

Wellingham has the ability to turn a match in a few minutes.

Not sure if I've seen Beams do it, and Sidebottom rarely, though has been brilliant on the biggest of stages.
I get what you're saying but Beams & Sidebottom both can turn games. Beams in 2010 nearly won us the 1st game against Geelong by kicking 4 goals in a low scoring match. Sidebottom has put in a few BOG performances as well, and without him we wouldn't have won the final against Adelaide in 2009. Just a couple of examples that came to mind.

Wellers can be devo in burst play up forward but he's more than that. His Melbourne performance last year showed he's capable of ripping it up in the midfield rotation.

He's more than a sneaky chance for goals and a bit-part player in the midfield.

What he lacks is not ability or belief, but total application. He's got to stop being a tit and bit part player and just apply himself consistently.

The rewards could be prodigious for him and the club. Otherwise he'll just be a nobody who floats out of the game, a footnote.

Besides our guns (of which cloke and Reid r left) imo, the only young players who are special r steele and fasolo. beams may get there.

There r new kids every year but we need to keep our guns no matter what or who we lose

Beams has shown more and is currently several levels above Fas at the present.

No doubt beams has showed more than fasolo but i was talking special players. We know them when we see them. i remember pendles 1st game and knew he was special. the closest feeling i have had to that was watching fasolo play. sorry but never had that feeling with beams.

When you look at Wellers 2011 - i feel he probably would have marked himself around a B- 17 goals and 18+ touches per game with 8 contested possessions - we know he can do better as we've seen it.
He is an important impact player for us especially around the stoppages - he will be really important when the mighty Luke Ball leaves us - we'll be looking at the likes of Wellers, Beams and Blair to provide more of the inside grunt - i would not expect it all to fall on Pendles.

I just wish he wasnt such a larrikan at times and just really applied himself in 2012 - just learn off Pendles re: preparation and routine during the season - i'm sure he'd become a better footballer and Bucks would appreciate him much more too - he has the tools just needs to work on his dedication/mental side!
