This year his return for three games was

23 Disposals 2goals.1point and the 2.1 was against the Swans.

In all of these games he has been played as a key forward. And that is the reason the Doggies recruited him. Watching tonight was Deja vu. The delivery was not too bad and a decent key forward would of kicked goals. That is what cost them a historical win tonight, no key forward.

Great at SANFL level but AFL level not up to it.

Bit like Chambers would be if the Crows recruited him.

Give it a rest guys. Yeh, he's not a big game player. Mind you, not many people are against Geelong at the moment.

He gave us years of useful service and now is gone. It's unlikely that he would have still been on our list next time we win a premiership so it doesn't really matter anyway.


Are we going to see this thread bumped every time he plays a bad final? Perhaps when he retires and hasn't won a premiership at the Bulldogs? It's bordering on obsession.


Big-picture, we haven't lost anything by losing him, so let's just be thankful and leave it at that. If we bailed out of a prelim by a goal or got knocked out by the Bulldogs then perhaps we'd have reason to be bitter/gleeful at his failing.

The way many of us see it is that Welsh was a bit of a front runner who got his goals when we won easily and mainly in junk time when it was all over. He also had several finals games where he failed, as he often did in the hard tight ones.

My opinion of him is also downgraded having seen him walking around plastered to the eyeballs during footy season on several occasions.

I never respected him before he left us. Why would I change now that he plays against us rather than for us??

i agree; he may have had a pretty good season with the Bulldogs; 40+ goals from recollection, but truth is he probably wouldn't be playing AFL or be in his very final years, when we contend for the flag. he's already 30 by the start of next season. if he had stayed with the crows, he'd be gone by the end of 2009, if not earlier, ie, which is why we delisted him in 2007...he was not a part of our bigger picture. so if anything, keeping him would've held back spots in the team for younger developing players who will be important for the team when we make a real attempt at the flag.

The fact is he regularly averaged multiple goals a match which over a period of time does win you games. The issue wasn't that he didn't win games, it was that he generally didn't step up in the games that we needed to win.


But who cares? We had him, now he's gone. It's a pity we didn't get something in return for him but other than that it's really not important. Is there really a need to rag on him every time he plays a poor big game just because he used to play for us? Did Melbourne supporters post in old Scott Thompson threads when he had a poor finals match for us?

Your first point is the most important here. We relied on him being our first string goal kicker whereas if he had been our third string he would have been doing his job. That is what his worth is. Although he was our top goal kicker for a few years unfortunately for Scotty he shouldn't have been.

no the reason its bumped is because people on this board think that somehow Welsh would have improved our position on the ladder this year and made us a better team.

scotty welsh was a very skilled forward for the crows- great kick for goal and also a great mark for his size, but to expect him to hold up a forward line for either the crows or bulldogs is just silly, has always played undersize agaist bigger key backmen, if you have played a few games of footy you will appreciate the struggle of contesting against a bigger opponent and welsh has constantly been cast this role throughout his footy career

Apparently, according to the Dogs board, he was used as a decoy forward to get Scarlett out of the action. So it is unfair to crack on about why didn't he win the game off his own boot.

One's currently rehabing from a Knee reconstruction, another his Shoulder reconstruction and the other played with a dodgy back for the majority of the season. The other, well the less said probably the better.

As for the Doggies board, they'd wanna hope that was the reason Welsh played so poorly, otherwise they're whole evil scheme to win a premiership with ex-Crows players was a failure. On a similar note, I wonder what they're excuse is for Hudson Crikey, Griffin and Maric put up a better fight last year against Ottens and King than Hudson and Minson did last night.
