I'm gonna get blasted for saying this but I think Murphy is overrated on this site. Have a look at the way Mitchell attacks the ball at the stoppages. Murph just expects it to come to him.

It's not TAC cup anymore Marc!!! Have a crack son!

Way too much overuse of the ball like the commentators have alluded to. I guess this is because we really lack some genuine lead up half forwards, particularly with Fisher out.

Jordan Russell is also making it very easy not to have him in my starting 22 for Rd.1
 
Settle down, its nab cup. No Walker, Fisher or Judd. Took a bit (long) time to settle and actually started to look alright towards the end of that quarter.

We played great in these games last year and look what happened! Just chill.

Actually I thought Murphy single-handedly steadied the ship in the 2nd quarter. Put his body on the line several times. You can see the difference between Gibbs & Murphy though, when it comes to use of the ball. Gibbs is a total class act, while Murphy sometimes over finesses.

Interesting to note when we started kicking the ball a bit longer in the second quarter we looked a lot better. There needs to be a balance between possessing the ball & kicking it long. In the first quarter they took Ratten's game plan just a bit too literally & as a result overpossessed.

Kudos for your comments re Murph who seems to be a protected species amongst Blues supporters. He needs to lift his intensity and aggression at the contest.

I wanna see BG take them on a bit more too.....too much sideways handball from him

good call. id rather get pumped in nab cup rather than the real season, and as for that richmond supporter saying that crap about the next few no1 picks i think you guys have that covered for a while
 
From the on-line commentary I saw, a lot of clangers occured from Carlton. Thoughts!

hahaha yes but we've been sounding like that now for a good 20 odd years and have always been right...we're entitled to say it. You've at least been in the finals a couple times in the last 10.

Hey enough with the beating up on OUR own team. Sure they weren't too crash hot in the first half and we shouldn't have been down so much.

We've gone through years of rubbish - on field and off just wait. It's pre season and we've got a fairly new team who team who needs to settle. How many times did you have to think twice about a player out there tonight because we've hardly or never seen his face. Don't label us yet.
 
I think everyone on here is forgetting the purpose of a pre-season game. I mean its nice to win, but the reason football clubs play pre-season games is to get a few miles under the legs in a game situation and to try a few different things, things such as handballing at all costs, handball backwards until someone is free, maybe even playing a few people out of position. How do we know Brett Ratten didn't tell everyone to handball at all costs just to see what happens, i'd rather take these sort of risks at this time of the year rather than in round 1.

and there were some positives out of tonights game, Gibbs was all class, Hampson showed a bit, not quite as good as last week, but for a bloke who is 19 or 20, he is doing far better than the likes of Dean Cox and Aaron Sandilands at the same age.
jamieson was excellent, he is a real find.
and i think Stevens will be better for the run, was a little rusty, but overall got a lot of it and did a few good things.

Obviously there were some negatives, handballing was disgraceful, but as mentioned earlier, i wouldn't expect them to be handballing as much come round 1. but it is an area we have to improve, look at Geelong and even Essendon last night, they don't miss targets.

How quick is that Rioli though, wouldn't mind a bit of pace like that around our forward line and the boy can tackle.

I honestly do believe now, that in general, a lot Carlton supporters seem to be absoloutely disgraceful when it comes to following our team. What kind of a thread is this? Pathetic trolling.

Yeah, so we had a bad quarter in the second round of a NAB cup game. Get the @#$% over it. Did you see what happened when our game plan did click in the third term? It was brilliant - handballing through packs of hawthorn players from one end of the ground to another.

Threads like 'so and so is finished' show the lack of maturity with some posters.

Is the Totally Carlton forum like this? Hopefully there's some more intelligent posters on there.

You best player last night by the length of the straight. He led by example and was fantastic. Good luck to him for the season. Rank assessment.
 
Credit where credit is due. Murphy stood up in the 2nd half and gained some valuable possessions. However, he looks shaky in front of the sticks and his disposal has become a little sloppy. Just not what you see from him at training. I'm sure he'll be right. But it is a concern as he was drafted because he was an exceptional deliverer of the footy who can finish well in front of goals.

I expect Judd to make a difference as they were pretty tight on Murph last night too. Something he needs to work hard on.

totally agree! Murph was more frustrating than anything. His disposal the last 2 weeks has been off, and his shot at goal is dissappointing. He will be right, is a bit down on confidence maybe.

Thought Fev showed a bit , although his accuracy was poor as well.

I wont say that Carlton are crap, what I will say is that last night may have just been a bit of a wake up call that there is still a fair bit of work to go before the Blues return to the top flight. While there were some good signs in the second half it should be remembered that the Hawks did leave Buddy on the bench for the second half and also rested a number of their stars. I still expect the Blues to improve but not enough to be a finals contender this year. Good Luck and see you in round 1.

Wake up call is right. But the same goes for any team in the AFL. If you're not switched on mentally from the first bounce the game will be over by quarter time against quality opposition.

We outscored the Hawks in 3 quarters and yes they rested a couple of stars, but Carlton played the kids from the start of the game, part of our pre-season plan to see where they are at.

I don't think the Hawks kids would take their foot off in the second half considering they are trying to press for a senior spot come Round 1. It just goes to show how important it is to have senior players guiding a young list, hence the importance of Hadley, Stevens and Judd to our ability to be competitive over 4 quarters.

What sort of supporters post this kind of crap..Have a good look at yourself...After a 35 possesion game to Stevens you still speak this kind of shit?
 
Hawthorn to their credit have a lot of great young talent and in the coming years will be a force to be reckoned with...They came to play last night and it showed rught from the first bounce...To our credit though we kept our heads up and showed great determination and carlton spirit as we just kept at it...Marc Murphy's kicking however does need a bit of work i know its pre season but even last season his kicks were still a bit astray?
 
I didn't think it was worse than expected. Hawthorn are a seriously good team, and our guys aren't at that level yet.

The one concern for me was Ratten's coaching. Our players didn't appear motivated early on. Their basic skills looked underdone - tackling, handballing and foot skills were shocking. It looked like the players had barely touched a ball all year. And for some reason, we're playing our best defender as a forward, and our second-best forward as a defender. Plus, the game plan appears to have gone back to the Wayne Brittain 'handball backwards until you get tackled' plan that sent us to the bottom of the ladder 6 years ago.

Its still very early, but the bad signs Ratten's coaching showed late last year are still there...
