Whoops.

Forgot to post. In all the excitement of Tigers win. I actually managed to watch the first 3 quarters of this game. A shame I couldn't watch the whole game as seeing how the Roo’s guys went in the last quarter in a tight hard fought game would have been interesting. The report on the clubs website gave a good summary of each players and for once I thought the published bests were reasonably accurate (based on 3 quarters) so I will just add a couple of things that stood out to me.

Speight - What the hell is wrong with Ben? Does someone know?

Pederson – Played quite a bit of the game as, for want of a better term, an old fashioned ruck rover. Big Willie Sullivan played as well and he hasn’t for a while as Daw and Pederson had shared the ruck load between them in other games I have seen. Whether this was to give Pedo a crack at the ruck rover role and for Maj to spend more time up forward or to counter Williamstowns big talls Roughhead and Campbell I am not sure. Maybe a bit of all that. But Pedo playing as a ruck rover was an interesting move I thought. I have wondered how Pederson can get a crack at the AFL now that the days of the second ruckman seem to be over and others are preferred as key forwards. His great strengths are his reading of the play and ability to run to the right spots regularly coupled with being very good over head. Given the “sameness” of current game plans at AFL level it may be having a 6ft 4inch? Guy running through the midfield could throw a bit of a curve ball in there. I could see it being very handy at kick ins for example. Goldy and other talls head off to one side. Pedo with hopefully some midget following him will go to the other. He was exposed a couple of times in situations where he fumbled ground balls you would expect a “standard” mid to easily handle. But he would also offer ruck and KP options as well, of course, if he was playing. The only trouble is I can’t see anyone in the AFL side I would drop for him. Maybe if Anthony or Gibson were injured you could give it a crack.

Daw – Just Wow. Well First Quarter Wow. Basically monstered the Williamstown defence early doors. Kicked 2. Should have kicked more. Created several more. Too Strong. Too Athletic. Too Quick. For a while there it was literally a Majak show. I am not sure what happened as the game went on. He was rotated off. Played more in the ruck. Better opponent? The ball came down less as Williamstown's mid’s gradually took over. But his stints and effectiveness in the forward line dried up as the game wore on. Not sure exactly why. But if I had been Scott West I would have been leaving Maj up there all game and trying to clear everyone else out (Willy were dropping players back). If Maj could play like he did there for 20 minutes for a whole game. Watch Out. With the roof on in a windless Etihad on a good surface it could get exciting. Etihad would definitely suit his athletic game. And the match up problems he could potentially cause when you had a Petrie/Hansen to cover as well.....

I would suggest though that to better complete the Majak show

1) He (and Aaron Black) invent a marking machine like the bowling machine they use for cricket training. Throws the ball up at various angles and speeds. You can’t leave practise until you have marked 100 in a row. Especially the ones at the top of your exorbitant leaps. (Watching Azza and Petrie may also help)

2) He does some work on how to lead. With his speed if they decide to match him up with someone who may able to match him in the air then they surely couldn’t keep up to him on the lead. The only thing being that the person kicking to him on the lead better not hesitate on his kick coz if Maj has got going at top speed leading towards him he may well get Dawslammed.

Majak, at the moment, reminds me a little (metaphorically of course) of the old Gorilla plays golf joke. Both his drives and his putts go 500 metres down the middle. For example in one contest Majak competed in the air for a mark. The ball was spoilt. Majak was first to the ball at ground level by about 5 meters (his speed and recovery after marking contests is amazing) but he was heading away from goal. There was a free Werribee player 20 meters further back. Daw drives a low hard drop punt towards this player. The only trouble was that this drop punt went about 60 metres (at 1-2 metres high all the way) and if the player involved had got in its way he probably would have been decapitated. In two other instances right in front of goal Majak nearly marked two high balls, dropped them/spoilt but quick enough to get his hands on ball at ground level and shoots a handpass out to a Werribee player running towards the contest. Again though Majak doesn’t know his own strength and the balls went 5 meters past them. A little more finesse (Putting practise?) in Majak’s game and he would have had 3 extra goal assists at least.

I wouldn't be dropping either Hansen or Tarrant but if that was in the selectors minds, boy would I be tempted to give Majak a crack against Dees/Dogs. Of course Edwards, Pederson, Black, Mckinley and Warren should be ahead of him, if the footy gods were fair (Answer to that ? - See Zeibell’s 4 weeks), but if you thought footy couldn't get more exciting for a Roos supporter in 2012 then the door opening for a Majak debut might just change that.

They finally played him in his correct position.

Thanks for the write-up numbers! How did you see Ayden's and Mangans name. While Mangan has been doing a good job as a lockdown defender in just not sure he has enough weapons in his arsenal to demand another year on the rookie list.

How come you don't see him as a ruckman? Ive only seen three werribee games this year but his tap work is pretty impressive. From what i can gather he has only been comphrehensuvely beaten once this year and that was by Bellchambers. I understand that he is undersized but his body, leap and 2nd efforts will more than make uP for it.

I share OS's view on Daw that he is not a first ruck. I think that at AFL level he would be hold his own to an extent but against the true behemoths will be just too small. 195cm is just not tall enough when it comes to boundary throw ins or repeat stoppage situations, especially as the game drags on.

What Daw can do though is jump and mark and lead hard and kick and apply pressure, all attributes that scare key defenders. I reckon in a forward line containing a number of mobile talls he could be come a real weapon and as a relief ruck a difficult, mobile match up further up the ground as the game progresses.

Mangan is a keeper.

He has only just turned 21 is 190 cm and 95kgs and is already shutting down mature bodied forwards.

We'll develop him over the next couple of years and he will slot straight in behind Spud.

Tron pretty much answered for me.

I like how we have been developing Daw. Ruck is the perfect place to give him an education to the game and allow him to gradually improve his tank. Now, the second phase of his development has hopefully started - playing forward. Time to put on show what he has learnt playing on the ball and to hopefully pick up a few tricks in the forward line. Play out the season there, get another pre-season under his belt and who knows where he will be early next season? By then he will be on the senior list and hopefully ready to explode!

Has to be elevated to the senior list this year if we are to keep him.

Love the wright up on Majak. Has me dreaming of a crazy forward line that would scare the crap out of opposition coaches. He seems to be getting better as the season goes on, bit more consistence

He has a contract for 2013 so I assume he was always going to be elevated.

wow, that is terribly written. I hope you guys know what I mean

Yep, due to his contract he is just about 100% sure of being elevated next year. Obviously he could be bought out and delisted, but that would be too drastic. He'll get his upgrade. I doubt he will play AFL in 2012 though.

How's Malcolm Lynch going? Always liked him as a player when he was with us. Any chance he'll get a gig with you guys before the end of the season?

He's battled injury and fitness problems but is on a decent run of games atm, and doing ok. Nowhere near enough to warrant selection in the 1's, considering our AFL form right now. He'd be a fair way back in the queue if a spot did open up also.

1) Needs to get more of the football.
2) No

Pretty obvious Daw's been exposed to a greater learning curve playin Ruck. I think the general consensus is to play forward/ pinch hit in the ruck. Hopefully he now takes a few steps forward in his true role.

2 yrs ago, one of our defenders can't remember who, said Maj was the hardest forward at the club to defend on. Obviously talking about a small aspect of the total role, but either way, 2 yrs on you'd think he'd be even more capable.

Still a long way, it's a win that he's still on the list and still showing commitment. Would love it if this works out. Jesus Christ if he turns into the player we all hope I will be an absolute bonanza for the club and even the game itself. .

If only Brad Scott had played him in the AFL.

He would be a superstar by now.

The ball really is in Majak's court. He's the absolutely ideal foil for Goldstein at AFL level, to pinch hit for 5mins while Todd has a rest. I wouldn't want to be Robbie or Lachie, Majak's rate of development the past two years has been absolutely enormous.
