2nds West Adelaide vs Port Adelaide - Round 7 @ Loxton

Xavier Duursma wins the Russell Ebert medal.

Nice to win a game dedicated to a champion but gee that was one of the worst defensive efforts I have seen from a Port side.

Well done Xavier Duursma.

That win salvaged some of the weekend after yesterday's disappointment but it was closer than the scoreboard showed.

Really disappointing 3rd quarter. After the long break, and when you play such a good last quarter, you can't blame the injuries and the lack of run off the bench. It just clearly wasn't the reason for the poor quarter. It turned what was a half of complete dominance in the first half, into a less than a 2 goal game.

Duurs tagged out of it in the last half but was fantastic prior to that. Mead was fantastic all day. Williams mercurial, shame he missed so many easy set shots. Schofield and Frederick good as well. Reasonable day from a lot of players, but a shame the scoreboard didn't reflect our dominance

Carn two key backs went down during the game. Can't exactly train for that going in.

Very timely scratching of the jatz crackers by Durs during Timmy G's presentation of the Russell Ebert medal.

Two other observations,

1. Schoefield has all the skills required to make the grade at AFL level, but I suspect he is unfortunately 6-8 cm too short, and about 10 kegs too light.
2. A couple of the top up players continually took their eyes off the ball when an oppo player was in their vicinity, particularly during that 2nd half.
Regardless of their level of ability it would have been one training session and on your bike in the Fos Williams and Jack Cahill eras.

Bit to like about the game and a bit to hate.

Thought visentini, mead, taj Dixon and duursma set up the win in the first half while Williams and mayes brought it home in the second. Fredrick provided a tonne of run and lord had some key moments in the game.

Visentini was huge early but faded in the 2nd half. 36 hitouts from a rookie playing against men is a huge effort.

Duursma went in hard all day and had some great pickup and takeaways from contests. Looked a class above but also burnt a couple of kicks badly.

Mead some damaging ball use

Taj just always found himself getting to the right spots and using the ball well.

Dixon was too good.

Williams is just a pure forward.

Disappointed that Bergman wasn’t seen much as I want him to replace jones in the afl side. Might need another week or maybe we just had to stick him in a different role thanks to defence being gutted

We are massively missing pasini who we relied on to perform miracles regularly to stop goals. We will concede a tonne of goals for the rest of the sanfl season without him until McKenzie comes in and regains some form which could take a while.

Anyone watch the game able to give a run down on Williams?

I’ve been keen on him for so long but finally lost all hope when his tank wasn’t up to it after this last preseason and didn’t look close to AFL selection. Having said that, he seems to be kicking goals for fun at SANFL level.

Observations from the ground:

Duursma, Mead, Schofield and Mayes pretty good through the middle.

Frederick and Sutcliffe lots of ball but both caused turnovers and made mistakes. Frederick needs to know when to take the game on and when to hold it up as he too often gets the two backwards.

Dixon was too big, too strong up forward but didn't quite dominate like he threatened to early on. Will be better for the run.

Williams an odd one. Mercurial. At times looks like the best player on the ground and the next minute does something brainless or pathetic.

We need some big defenders especially with Lee and Skinner going down today. Mid season draft could be crucial.

All and all was a good day in the riverland. Ran into Brad Ebert and Chad Cornes who were out with their familes. The Loxton clubrooms are pretty schmick. Go Port.

Time for a Williams call up, see what he can do at the next level. Been impressed by Schofield , for a number of weeks, is developing nicely, a few more kgs of muscle to put on. Just maybe he has the skillset and speed to make it at AFL level.

Had a great weekend in the Riverland. Beautiful weather, great crowd. OK, the footy wasn’t great but we got the win.
Ran into Leon Milde after the game, having a beer in the Berri Hotel.
