Pick #21: Mitch Marsh

191cm, Hybrid Tall Forward

West Adelaide, South Australia

Strengths:

  • Endurance / Running Capacity
  • Forward Craft (Leads, Overhead, Set Shot)
  • Field Kicking

Shortcomings:
- Raw Strength

Mitch Marsh finds himself in the third tall forward / hybrid forward role going into the draft, however has the wares to make a move into a similarly versatile role to that of 2025 Jeremy Cameron pushing high up the ground and as far as a wing. A repeat leading machine, 'The Bison' marks like he's 195cm and moves like he's 185cm, with the pack marking and ground level skills to boot.

An elite set-shot in all facets of the skill, Marsh is able to bury the pill from near any distance or angle. His booming left foot extends to a deceptively high-level field kicking ability as seen late in his season with West Adelaide. Kicking 2 a game during that u18 campaign, as well as 12 in 4 at champs, Marsh uses his blend of speed, endurance and spring-heeled leap to get off the chain both deep inside 50 or out towards half-forward.

At AFL level he will work towards packing more muscle and core-strength onto his frame, as well as adding a dimension of forward 50 defensive pressure to his game if/when he can't outwork the elite defenders that can match him for speed, endurance, and aerial ability.

Pick #32: Matthew LeRay

188cm, Wing / Utility

Central District, South Australia

Strengths:
  • Intangibles / Character
  • Skills
  • Upside

Shortcomings:
  • Tank
  • Decision Making

All-Australian Wing Matt LeRay comes into the draft having played across every line this season and flourishing. At 188cm he blends skill, size, and intangibles together to make him an adaptable, modern footballer who has as much room to grow as anyone. He projects as a potential big-bodied midfielder with his class, and has stood on in a move to defence late this season, after dominating the wings opposite Harley Barker at u18 champs.

A dual-footed, clean overhead and below-the-knees player, LeRay is highly capable when it comes to winning his own ball, not only due to said skills but his immense work-rate both ways, grunt, and willingness to put his body in the line of fire. His immense leadership qualities, having captained Central this year, and also leading the South Australian u19 Cricket side, show off a team-first approach.

At AFL level he will endeavour to further improve his tank, as well as his decision making as to how to approach the game. He presented a modest 2km time trial, impressing more so in-game, but that only shows significant room for improvement and development, hopefully pushing towards a role on-ball in the future. As for his decision-making, LeRay sometimes commits too fully to going for a run, or takes too long to pick a target in open space. Both of these are not concerns to me, as a few years in the system under good IP proposes an elite all-rounder that fits the modern game superbly.

Toby Whan

Massimo Raso (Rookie or 4th Round)
I hate that they did well considering their starting hand.

Is there board rules regarding running unofficial, recreational mock drafts? Would probably be far more difficult without the omnipotent genius that is Keys at the helm but boy am I itching to do another one already

There’s no rule against it so I won’t stop you but I will say it takes a fair bit of time to keep on top of it and doing too many dilutes their impact

As an alternative, I’d suggest doing a thread for people to put together their own phantom drafts and post them up

If there’s an appetite for it from people I’ll set it up

One of the benefits about doping a mock is to understand sweet spots in the draft and share how you felt at the point of the draft with your picks.

Having Essendon, they have a great draft hand and we started the draft with 5, 6, 21, 27, 30, 83 and 101

With ArdentEagle going berserk with early bids, I suspect it caught the Suns off guard and so I stepped in to trade for 15.
The trade was pick 15 plus Dons F3 (returning) for 21 + 27

Not many clubs have multiple R2 pick so Essendon are the natural traders for Suns and Lions picks in the teens.

At 8 + 9 (was 5+6), there were great options. I could have gone double midfield with Sharp, Cumming, Grlj or Greaves but I chose to get the best KPF in the draft in Schubert and get the best balanced midfielder in the open draft in Cumming.

At this stage, I am feeling good. There is no way I am doing 5+6 for 2+13.

Then at 18 (was 15), I pounced on Oscar Taylor seeking dash and speed off the HBF. There had been a run of attacking half backs before my pick with Lindsay and Farrow just having been taken in the open 2 spots before my pick. Note to self – 13 to 15 is a good spot to get a running half back. There were other options in Phillipou but the rest of the picks I liked straight after were mainly talls.

Up again at 25, I went for outside speed with Harley Barker. He has speed and power and very neat foot skills. He can also play along all three lines. I managed to get this pick off before the NGA bids so that was great.

Running low on points and going into deficit was not a problem since I had a F2 from the Suns.

I picked up Hussein at 30 and Sweid at 37. Seemed about right and happy to match.

Summary of Draft Haul - 6 players taken all inside 37:

Schubert - best KPF in the draft
Cumming - best balanced mid in the open draft
O Taylor - top level HBF with speed and pace on the ball
Barker - best wingman in the Championships
Hussein - craft small forward at a discount
Sweid - craft small forward at a discount (BOGOF)

As acting Matty Rossa, I am going to Craig Vozzo expecting a salary increase and the club will wish they moved Dildoro on sooner. The Drug Rats loved the draft and did not see the problems that others are preaching.

How do you think the Sweid and El-Ackhar bids go in the real thing? It seemed like everyone forgot about them and you landed a really good hand but I would expect Essendon to keep two picks after 20 to match those bids.

That said, there do seem to be some really good options between 15-25 and pairing Schubert with Caddy for the next ten years makes a lot of sense.

Since Dons took Kako last year and they have 2 options this year, I was only committing to taking 1. I was not going to match if another poster did an Ardent Eagle and bid crazy. It was a case of nice to have both but I wasn’t going to overpay and Barker at 25 felt a steal - ACL injury considered.

Is there an opportunity for us to do something similar? For example, if we were to trade pick 2 and pick up something that could be combined with 34, 41 or used on its own to nab a player in that region.

Surely Nairn wouldn't slide that far.
Has talent akin to a Lecras, finds space like we saw Venables able to do a couple of times (just sneak away into open space without anyone noticing)
