West Coast Draft Discussion

I think the reason WCE fans bang on about Colyer and Jetta is because we want a fix to a serious deficiency in our forward line. A lack of a crumbing FP is hindering our ability to take oportunities that could of been taken to score, if only we had a speedy crumber there to take them.

Forums are used to discuss hypotheticals, as none of us have the position to change anything that goes on regarding the stuff we post.
So if you don't like reading certain types of posts or opinions, exercise your right not to read them, instead of having a bitch.

If we get two top draft picks I honestly think Trengove would be one of the kids we choose if Scully is gone.

We like taking SA boys as theres rarely a go home factor, with them.

Especially after the show he put on on the weekend.

I find it difficult to choose out of Scully, Lucas, Trengove and Morabito.
A combination of any 2 of those 4 would be fantastic. I suppose it may come down to taking what's left, as well as deciding what we'll need out of each of their individual qualities.

They're all good players, and they all offer something different compared with the other.
I'm glad the experts have to make the final call on this.

I think you missed my point. As with Colyer, I never said he didn't have the talent/form to warrant a bit of talk about him. I'm just sick of the same guys getting talked about over and over again.

My absolute pet hate is people always posting their "dream draft", which usually goes something like:

Lucas/Morabito, Colyer, Jetta, Fyfe

There are actually other players in the draft too.. Players from other states, even!

Well, tell us what your draft preferences would be?

If we got to top 5 picks (which I don't think will happen) would you take Talia? On that topic, where do people see Talia taken? Definite first round?

I also liked the look of Gysberts, anyone else?

Lance Daly has to be worth a rookie spot, at worst, now that he's done a fair amount of work on his tank. Adam McKinlay - second/third in colts goalkicking. Luke Bonnet would be a nice back pocket type, bit like Pratty on the Dockers list, but I've liked him for a couple of years.

Johnny M thanks for your write up - superb. Have you seen much of Adam Faulkner from Swans? Another of smaller height, but extracted really well the last game I saw him and seemed to have reasonably good evasive skills.

RE - no, haven't seen Kirk yet.

Talia would be in my sights come draft time.

Whether WC get a PP or not, I don't know if such an early pick should be used on him when we have more pressing concerns. Saying that, I'd love to see him in an Eagles jumper.
That way we won't have to waste games on Spangher, Wilkes and/or Schofield.

Yeah Talia is a definite 1st rounder in my view. Probably the best performing KP player in the carnival.

195cm, strong mark, versatile enough to play forward or back and runs like a midfielder. He's the archetypal modern-day footballer. Personally I can very much see the Swans taking him with their first pick.. he could certainly be worth a top 10 pick and they need a quality key defender.

I'm just as, if not more, excited about some of the boys from SA and Vic Country as the kids from WA. I'd be stoked to snare any of Trengove, Martin, Tapscott, Bastinac, Rohan or Stevens. Then there's Ah Chee from NT and Crighton from Tassie as well.

I'd like to see Tapscott become an Eagle too. He's another that I hope falls to our 2nd round pick in the late teens.

Swannies, I've actually seen a lot of Faulkner's football as well as his cricket, know a lot about the kid. Old fashioned ball magnet midfielder, as hard at is as anyone I've seen in a long while, and has the skills to match. Been very impressed with his football. Very different to Colyer, Matera etc. more like Ryan Neates from this year's 18's squad or a Paul Hasleby type mid. Will be interesting to see how his football develops this year and into the next. Been impressed by McKinlay when I've seen him play.

You've seen more of him than me, but that's a brilliant description, socks down type of player, but does have skill. I agree, I haven't seen anyone harder at it for a while in colts. He's a 92 kid, so can't be drafted this year, but I have a feeling he may slip past the GC net. And you reminded me of the forgotten man, Neates, I liked what I saw of him in the carnival as well. MCKinlay, yes I'm not sure why there's not much love, but he'd be worth a rookie at least, I'd suggest.

adagio - no love for Gysberts? I agree that Trengove seems to have Eagles written all over him for mine, the type of footballer we like and SA U18 captain.

I like Gysberts, I reckon he'll make a fine AFL footballer, but I think he's very much surplus to our needs. We've got enough inside mids that can hit the park hard and extract the ball (Scooter, Shuey, Masten, J-Mac, Cockie etc.). What we lack are some classy finishers - I think you'll notice all the players I mentioned fall very much into that category.

Sorry, I have betrayed my preferences - I love the in and under guys that hit packs hard and make things happen, but I now see where you are coming from.

Speaking of classy finishers, Cotchin would be nice to have, wouldn't he? Brandon Matera's left foot is dynamite! Bloody hell GC will clean up won't they - Darling, Swallow, Toy etc etc?

So who are the classy finishers in the draft? Duncan, Hutchings, others? Most players to me, these days, seem to have a little scrappy kicking but those that watch the juniors (RE, Johnny Mc) might have a better idea of their kicking abilities? I mean Lucas was considered by many to have good kicking but when I saw him a couple of weeks ago he struggled to hit any targets.

I don't think there is much wrong with Lucas' kicking. His long kicks may lack some accuracy but he is genuinely dual sided. One of the best left foot kicks i've seen for a while.

highly doubt he will go top 10, was hoping he would last till the second round :D

if you grab him with your second rounder youll be laughing, he will be a very good player. talia or tapscott second rounder, leave us the other ;)

Better than Scully? Wasn't impressed with his (Scully's) disposal, but that was just 1 game at Subi I saw. As good as Cotchin's, or compare favourably?

Scully has neat disposal, off both sides, he isn't a Daniel Rich type.

His in close work though........

You'll struggle to find a kid with better hands in close over the last few years. 1 touch footballer, Diesel Williams instinct, and the handballing skills to match.

Thats where his value lies imo, 1st possessions, and getting the ball to his teams advatage from stoppages/contested situations.

Ha Ha, not many are though, are they?

Yes, he struck me as being very much a Masten type, good hands in close, but you say better than Masten? Hmmmm.

I'll have to do some more study, but who are the clean finishers?

better kick definitely, better player not on what ive seen so far. but i get the feeling scully might not be as good as everyone is pumping him up to be.

is say lucas's disposal would be as good as cotchins, if not better. under pressure it may be different though, because we have seen cotchin under pressure in the afl, and lucas was in a dominant WA team and had plenty of room and time to use his skills.

Firstly No Disrespect to both JM or Swannies. I find you both very informative and well balanced.
Faulkner is not like Neates. Neates is exceptionally quick, makes very good decisions and has a very balanced life. Adam is a terrific in and under player who lacks pace(has good evasive skills however) and doesn't make the best of decisions. Both are good at times with disposal.

Neates would be a very outside chance to be drafted re size and Adam would be an even smaller chance. However a very honest player he could become for Swans.

Thats a big call saying that Lucas has as good as if not better footskils than Cotchin.

Is Lucas a left footer? We need a few lefties in our team.

Ok lets say we end up with picks 2,5

melb - scully
WCE -
Freo/melb depending on percentage
WcE

do we take the best WA player first or would Tengrove be a better choice asuming scully goes 1.

he would need to be substantially better than either Lucas or morabito to take him or would he last till pick 5 ie melbourne don't take him with their second pick.personally I think Melbourne would take Butcher with their second pick as there is no way he will or any other KP will last past round 1.
So I would try to take the best WA player first then freo can take second best and I will lean towards Morabito for his speed and ball carry then hope to get Tegrove with pick 5 - would be a great draft again.

If lucas is better happy with that 2

perfect for you guys would be trengove and lucas.

melb - scully
wce - trengove
melb - butcher
wce - lucas
freo - morabito

thats how im thinking it will go at this stage

None taken southjoy. Agree with what you're saying, but that's why I cleared the decks tomorrow morning so I can go out and watch him against the best team, Claremont, and see if I was seeing the right things. His evasiveness is what first struck me and his ability to get his hands on the pill. Not unlike Priddis, but with far greater awareness and generally disposes to advantage. Looking forward to having a look at the Claremont colts tomorrow morning as well.:thumbsu:
