What it means for West Coast:
The last time the Eagles hosted a Thursday night elimination final in 2016 they were ambushed by the fairytale Bulldogs, and there is a sense of trepidation in the west about Essendon's visit. Keeping the back-to-back flag bid alive is one thing, but some need convincing that West Coast remains a serious contender after missing the top four.

What it means for Essendon: Winning a final was probably the Bombers' pass mark before 2019 started and would go some way to appeasing a restless supporter base. Essendon has been waiting 15 years for a September victory – the longest stretch in the competition – and has lost its past five finals by an average of 49 points.

The stat: The Bombers have won all five of their finals against West Coast by an average of 46 points, but none of those have been in Perth. The teams built an intense rivalry during Kevin Sheedy's era at the Dons' helm but haven't met in September since the 2002 elimination final at Marvel Stadium.

The match-up: Nic Naitanui v Tom Bellchambers
Naitanui will return for his first game in two months after an ankle complaint and there is no doubt the talismanic ruckman will energise West Coast early. If Bellchambers can weather the storm and the Bombers get on top around the contest an upset could be on the cards.

It's a big week for: John Worsfold
You couldn't script a more intriguing storyline for 2019's opening final. West Coast's favourite son, who captained the Eagles' first two premierships and coached the '06 triumph, heads back to Perth amid reports his job at Essendon won't be safe without a victory over his former club.

Big call: Adam Simpson to emerge from the coaches' box waving his jacket above his head after West Coast holds on in a thriller.

Prediction: Eagles by three points.

Essendon to ruin yet another Eagles chance of going back to back 😊
A win will make it 4 from 4.

Essendon defeated them in finals 93 and 95.
In the last round of 07, Scott Lucas kicked 7 last quarter goals to cost West Coast a home QF. Proceeded to exit in straight sets.

To pay tribute to our rivalry, I vote for West Coast to host us at the MCG.

Essendon in finals and Thursday night home elimination is basically our dictionary definition of "horror". Essendon in a late steal, otherwise us by at least 10 goals.

If I was Woosha, I'd give free travel and tickets to the likes of Hird, Winderlich, Scott Lucas and Jason Davenport (among others) to enhance our bad luck on the night.

Essendon a big chance here. West Coast showed they aren't interested in doing the hard stuff vs the Hawks - Gaff, Nic, and Sheppard can go f*ck themselves, everyone else got theirs last year. If the Eagles let Essendon run-n-gun the ball out of D50 like they have been the 2 weeks previous it could be a bad night.

They don't do saturday afternoon. Saturday twilight only
WC Melbourne game was 1.20pm Perth time last year. If it's a non local team the game will be in afternoon to give them time to travel back that night

My only fear is that Essendon rested a lot of their players last week and would have been setting their sights on this match.

They would have envisioned that they'd be playing Collingwood at the G, but still.
I think this game is won or lost in the first qtr, will see which team comes with the most intent.

This is one of those win-win games for neutrals.

Either Essendon go yet another year without a finals win, or West Coast roflstomp their way out of contention after being basically a lock for top 2 for most of the season.
Not funny for everyone... we could have been hosting them this week and cruising thru to a home prelim against the Cats ffs
