It's safe to say West Coast are a lock for bottom 4 this year which would make 5 consecutive bottom 4 finishes surely they'll be able to ask for a priority pick? As far as I know the AFL still hand out priority picks using their secret formula and I remember Gold Coast getting one in 2019 which allowed them to secure Rowell and Anderson with their first 2 picks, and the Suns weren't anywhere near as bad as West Coast have been they won 23 games in 5 years from 2015-2019 while West Coast have only won 11 games since the start of 2022. This is beyond diabolical and to help further put it into perspective Carlton won 25 games from 2003-2007 after they got sanctioned for salary cap cheating in 2002 and even Carlton's more recent dark ages netted them 29 wins from 2016-2020 after Mick Malthouse destroyed the club in 2015, which set the club back 5-6 years in the words of ex Carlton player Nick Graham. Would you be happy with West Coast receiving a priority pick this year? As much as the AFL love neglecting WA it would be in their best interests for West Coast to become competitive again soon if they can give a priority pick to Gold Coast why not West Coast?

There was an assistance package last year which should help make the club a little more competitive this year. Really it’s just going to take time for all the young guys to get enough games under their belts to compete at AFL level, there’s no type of assistance that can speed that process up.

No doubt the herbs and spices will miraculously change once West Coast and the likes of Richmond ask for it and something like top 5 PP's will be back.

Especially if Collingwood look like facing a rebuild in the near future.

Funny how that works...
Weird thing to say after we've already gotten less assistance than you did.

No you didn't.

Well ahead at the same point.
After three years of being shit (2020-2022), north received a future second and a future third that needed to be traded, and two additional spots on the rookie list. After a fourth year of being shit, north received an end of first round pick for that year, and two future end of first picks that did not have to be traded, but would be reviewed at the end of the next season and possibly taken back if you had improved. Given that stipulation, north assumed they would improve, and so traded the two futures out.

After three years of being shit (2022-2024), west coast received nothing. After a fourth year of being shit, we got four more rookie list spots and a single end of first round pick.

So "at the same point" we are up two rookie list spots (which are temporary), but down a third round pick, a second round pick, and two first round picks. What exactly gives you the idea that we're well ahead?

I wouldn’t want my club to have to beg for draft assistance because they were so horrendously run.

Going cap in hand for charity picks shows there’s something seriously wrong with the football dept and they can’t help themselves.

Clubs need to nip this in the bud. Stop asking for charity picks to change the precedent. Have a bit of pride.

Why? Not like Richmond ever turned them down before.

Why? Gee I wonder why someone would say such a thing... ;)

Even though we didn’t beg, we were horrendously run back then.

Wallace and Miller had huge egos but were terrible at what they did. And the board that appointed them not much better.

North got handouts with Clarkson, Hood and Watt in key posts and Brady with the keys to the list. I’ve been critical of these four in having the vision for the future of the club.

West Coast got handouts with McQualter, Pyke and Clarke at the helm.

I don’t mind mini, but think that Pyke meddles and Clarke is probably out of his depth in his role.

Rather than beg for picks, working on how to put the best people in the key positions in the football dept, giving them the resources to succeed and then backing them is the way to go. It takes time and a lot of patience. As well as get those key decisions right.

Some clubs don’t have the strength to do that themselves though. They prefer and expect to be rewarded for poor output.

Claiming that a handout that you don't have to ask for is somehow different to a handout you do is a wild take man.

No worries, get rid of the soft cap and we'll happily do all those things.

Absolute joke that we print money but can't spend it because it's 'unfair' to the povo clubs.

Just bring back the old system. 4 wins or less 2 years in a row and you get an extra pick. Works a treat.
I'll be honest, maybe it's just me having rose coloured glasses on but I sure don't remember teams being apocalyptically awful for multiple years in a row back when those rules were in place.

Umm yes that rule existed.

Carlton finished bottom in 2005-07

If we win 1, 2 or 3 games I’d probably expect some more assistance. Win % over 5 years would be roughly sub 15%.

Nothing crazy though. Couple end of 2nd rounders, one needs to be traded, and an end of third. Don’t **** with the first round any more than it has to be.

If West Coast keep bringing that type of effort that they did against GC especially after they initially got smashed they’ll surprise a few of us.
I was quite impressed with the spirit and endeavour they showed on Sunday.

Got smashed by a team full of Lamborghinni's in the first half. (Farrari's are all at Richmond)

How about we just wait and see how this season pans out.

Last years grand finalists lost to the Suns at home by 10 goals a week earlier.

The win loss and % will tell most of the story at seasons end.

Yeah, I know carlton were bad for a few years, but wasn't that flow on effects from the salary cap breach? And even then it was only three years, compared to the five north have had and that west coast will likely rack up this year.

Of course they weren’t.

The system worked.

Horrible teams got a massive leg, fast leg up (like when GC were given Anderson to go with Rowell)

You are unlikely to stay shit getting the cream of the draft quickly, in groups in 2 years that it normally takes 4-5 to accumulate.

The other thing to consider is when teams got the #1 and #2 pick they often got the best two kids in the county (viewed at the time). There was no acadamies, we didn’t have a massive trend of top 5 F/S picks compromising the draft.

Consider North getting the old PP’s and taking JHF and Daicos/Sam Darcy and two of Thilthorp, JUH Phillips or Ashcroft and Sheezel in successive years in an uncompromised system

For selfish reasons, it would be a complete joke if they changed the rules now, I wouldn’t put it past them though, given what they did with NGA’s and academies.

With the Academy systems, FS, NGA, the old system makes even more sense.

I’m actually of the opinion given the inequality in the system, that the bottom 5 should just get the top 10 picks at the moment, in a snake format. Or some sort of auction format with a budget of points, for matched bids

I think West Coast actually used the handouts the way they were meant to - to prop up the team on field in the short term to be more competitive while the kids develop.

Using the compo pick on Starcevich and the extra list spots on retreads is testament to that and full respect to them in not abusing the system and just going to the draft and picking another kid.

I’m all for compo if it’s used this way.
