Perth area

Mostly sunny. Light winds becoming easterly 15 to 20 km/h in the early afternoon then becoming light in the late afternoon.

Where and when: Optus Stadium, Friday July 12, 6.10pm AWST
TV, radio and online: Click here for broadcast guide

What it means for West Coast:
It's the proverbial 'eight-point game' for the Eagles, who could tighten their grip on second spot and move two wins clear of one of their rivals.
What it means for Collingwood: A chance to put the brakes on the runaway train the season is fast becoming after three losses in five games. Upsetting West Coast in Perth would relieve the building pressure.
The stat: West Coast has won the past four clashes – three of them at the MCG – by an average of 19.5 points. The Pies haven't kicked more than 11 goals in any of those games.
The match-up: Nic Naitanui v Brodie Grundy.
Looms as the decisive battle. The impact Naitanui (No.281 in Official AFL Player Ratings) has on West Coast is hard to quantify, but the Eagles booted more than half their score from stoppages in the Western Derby and have dominated clearances since his return. Grundy (No.3) is arguably the game's best ruckman, and averages 20.7 disposals – more than double Naitanui (10) – while he has a slight edge in hit out to advantage percentage (30.7 to 28.1).
More brilliance from Nic Naitanui!

The finish from Luke Shuey wasn't bad either 😏#AFLFreoEagles pic.twitter.com/z5g7M5gUvC

It’s a big week for: Mason Cox
The giant American is under the pump and has only kicked 15 goals and taken 45 marks from 10 games in a side that is struggling to hit the scoreboard. Cox will have his work cut out against Tom Barrass with Jeremy McGovern coming across to help when he can, but the Pies need him to lift with the side averaging just 72.5 points – 15th in the AFL – in the past six games.

Tom Barrass won't be making life any easier for Mason Cox this Friday night. Picture: AFL Photos

Big call: Eagles spearhead Josh Kennedy to return fresh from a weekend off and drill a season-best five goals.
Prediction: Eagles by 21 points

Early this year when we beat the Pies at the MCG the eagles broke even in the clearances despite losing the hitouts 42-19. With Nic Nat back it’s hard to imagine this number is anywhere close to this lopsided. If that’s the case the Pies should be very concerned about the clearance numbers.

Eagles don't lose close games (check the margins of their 4 losses)

Collingwood need to jump them - and jump them early - to have any sort of hope

Can't see that happening, however, and think the eagles will get them by 30-40 points after it being close until the 5 minute mark of the final term and Collingwood mentally check out

Hope I'm wrong though ;)

Hell no
It’s a Friday game in Perth. So the commentary is going to be at an all time low. Thankfully Pav works for Foxtel and not 7.

Imagine Zemplas and Pav at the same time...
The delay in conversation would be a record

Don’t forget Margetts according to certain fan clubs obsessed with umpires on Facebook. He’s got it won for us already, cool I don’t even have to attend then

Winner of tonights game wins the flag

Met round 17 at the G last year, WCE won, goes on to win the Prem. Pies win in round 17 at Optus, goes on to win Prem?

Dunno. Winner should be flag favourites though. They'll playoff in the Granny again.

Would much rather this have been the season opener to be honest. It's still a good game between top 4 teams, but the GF rematch context is completely lost now with so many other narratives and stories over the first 16 rounds of the season, this loses a bit of hype.

Play this as the opener in round 1 and there is an entire preseason of build up where the revenge and retribution card can be played up a bit and it's a huge spectacle unfurling the flag at the home of the premiers.

The "quality of football" argument is bogus, we see rubbish football all through the year it just depends on the night, the "fitness of the players" argument is also irrelevant, teams can have a multitude of suspensions/injuries at this stage of the year. Play the GF rematch as season opener!

*I know they played earlier in the season too, but the point still stands about this game being at the home of the Premiers.

Anyway, rant over.

Eagles by 14, too strong at home but Collingwood will fight hard with their backs against the wall.

Pies to play a whole new way...fast ball movement, with low laSer entries into F50, negating WCE intercepting defenders. Intercept marking off HB will be a niil all contest this time. No more bombing into our F50 and gifting the ball to McGovern, Barrass, Hearn etc. Back to 2018 levels of pressure on the ball carrier. JDG, Jamie Elliott, WHE to benefit immensely from fast ball movement and Crocker to lead fast and frequently to create space. Cox to thump the ball to ground at every opportunity, but also to lead out like Crocker and create space for our forwards as 2 WC defenders will have to follow him. IQ and Noble to rebound with high speed off the back half, and our mids to run aggressively, and fearlessly, through the corridor whenever.
Result: either: WCE by 40 or Pies by 40. Don't think it will be close. Whichever way the risks shake out.

Eagles should win given the team on paper and recent form, but this season has shown anything can happen.

I'd say Eagles by 15 or so. Hope it's a good game for the neutrals, but I hope we smash them for my peace of mind and stress levels.

This thread will soon deteriorate into an umpiring whinge session.
Who will be whinging? Definitely not any WCE supporters, given how much umpires in the West, whether consciously or not, appease the local crowd.

Given the free kick count in the last game in perth was 23 apiece (in perth)

And the other 2 recent ones were in favour of Collingwood in Melbourne

Would you suggest recently that the umpires are now favouring Collingwood in Melbourne?

Or might it just be how those games panned out?

This game is important but only for psychological reasons. A win will maintain the advanced WC has over Collingwood but winning will also put more pressure on WC as they’ll no longer be flying under the radar. This has worked to their advantage in recent times. So it’s a double-edged sword. Got to drop a couple of games before finals to lesson their profile but also to challenge WC to keep finding grit and to push themselves to find innovative ways to win.
