Lord is frustrating to watch.
One minute he’ll make a contest, run through someone and give a quick handball to a player running past to set up a goal, the next he’ll drop an easy mark that makes you wonder if he’s ever played before.
His attitude seems good and he always competes hard but he just has absolutely no consistency.

luktrocious is getting paid 1m per anum

Id be pissed if he sat in the SANFL, it would be robbery, 1m to play in the SANFL?

I think due to his talent he has to play, but i am very skeptical as to if he will ever be a good afl player or not
He’s been treated way too harsh in here. He really wasn’t that bad last year in the games he played.

If yesterday is anything to go by where we actually make an effort to hit up leading forwards he’s going to be a huge weapon.

Totally agree. Last year was an abomination across the board with our coaching structure and transition. Add in a significant injury early in the season and it was a write off for Jack. With him playing as a high chf and quicker ball movement I think he will kick 40 goals this year and be the conduit between defence and forward.

Would you play him ahead of Whitlock?

Does he have the tank to play wing and push JB back to half back?

I just don't see his role.

I know you weren’t asking me but you have to play them both don’t you? Whitlock is more of a high marking key forward/second ruck type that Jack is not. Lord is the one that misses out in my mind.
Fair call, I rewatched the highlights though and Lord played a role in at least three of the third quarter goals.
But yeh, those two seem to be the ones competing for a spot.

Poor opposition but the game style and how we moved the ball and scored was pleasing. Lots of easy out the back goals, quick centre clearance goals, and scores from turnover.

Rozee, butters and georgiades all were fantastic. Drewy great too.

I actually thought for his first proper hitout down back it was a good performance by Marshall. So much cleaner by foot than any other tall defender we have.

Mead was decent too I thought.

Richards and DBJ pretty lively.

From the newbies I thought Wehr looked pretty good and Watkins had some nice moments.

Horny had some nice moments too and got through unscathed which is the main thing.

I go into most seasons feeling misplaced optimism. A season’s break made me forget about Hinkley’s shortcomings as a coach. But I think there are good reasons to feel optimistic this year. They’ll be disappointments no doubt but I’m confident the trajectory will be upwards

Wow

Very exciting to watch. Let’s see how it holds up against better teams but it’s pretty and entertaining.

First thing that came to mind, we have a LOT of very good kicks in the team capable and willing to execute tough kicks. It was wonderful watching our players take it on and kick to advantage. We had space in the forward line , my god I have dreamed of this day, never seemed like it would come.

I’ll have to watch the replay , my attention span came and went as a new addition to my household arrived Friday morning.. but

Rozee Mitch and butters are in great form.

Drew was a key cog.

Our kf line was young and exciting. Whitlock really has the potential to be a dual threat going forward in terms of a forward target that can be a 2nd ruck that causes other 2nd rucks grief.

Our backline is a worry. Bit of run off there which is great , better teams will tear us apart.

Todd isn’t a natural defender, tho he’s gonna take marks now and then and use the ball great. Also pretty decent at spoiling oppo marks due to years of kens, just bring the ball down to ground mantra. Still, better teams and better kfs are gonna go to town is us and him occasionally.

Ramm isn’t ready, but Ive said for years teams often take players who aren’t ready and play them until they are versus our hope they get ready in the 2s approach.

I thought Evans recaptured some of his form.

Berry … wow. He looks electric. Those pickups at pace , those kicks. That kick to zadow was unreal just to put such a long fast travelling kick to advantage.

Geez hard to gauge where we are at this match. We looked good and confident in most parts. Still very shaky in defence.

The opposition looked terrible and disinterested. Skills were deplorable which put us under very little pressure during turnovers.

West Coast are obviously dreadful and that will be the lowest degree of difficulty and resistance the team will face all year, but our ball movement was something else.

I’m sure i’m not alone here — I’d actually forgotten what slick, attacking, individually-motivated football looked like as opposed to the constipated, system-based, analytics-driven dirge that became the strait-jacketed norm for pretty much anyone not named Wingard, Westhoff, Gray or Butters for the better part of the previous decade.

And whatever limitations certain players have was more than compensated against by a relentless desire and urge to compete, harangue and go again.

Georgiades already looks set to profit in spades instead of banging his head against a brick wall even when we’re dominating, so that’s nice.

If the coaches can weave any sort of magic with getting Luko and his long-promised strengths involved, the potential in this new attacking gameplan goes up again.

Lorenz picked up 7 disposals with less than a quarter time-on-ground, and helped pad Zak's stats. Looks to enjoy the in-close footy.

I think it is fair everyone is lauding the new look attack and seemingly acres of space in the forward half to operate in, but this is all (I feel) a direct result of the new defensive game-plan.

It is very clear to see Josh has implemented a new zone/cluster form of defence that sits a kick back from the ball - taking away dangerous corridor space and forcing either slow sideways movement, or a long kick to a contest. The most refreshing thing for me is that stupid high-press for repeat entries is gone and our midfield seems willing and able to now roll back to help out the defence.

Yes, it was against the probable spooners, but they are still an AFL side and we dictated play against them all day, and allowed ourselves the freedom to counter-attack all day long. We were stone dead last in scores from turnovers last year, but that will change now and once the midfield gets on top its scores from clearance which is looking like our 1 wood. Just overall great structural changes that should hold up in modern/high pressure games.

Absolutely I would. Big fan of Whitlock but I think he’s competing with Lord for the tall forward second ruck position.

Forget the opposition! Of course we wont get that much space & time against better teams, but there was soooo much to like that had nothing to do with how poor WC were!

I actually cannot remember seeing an aimless bomb into the forward pocket! I know there were, and you will always get them in a game, but they were swamped by the quality, eyes-lowered, passes to leading players. Such a novelty for Port supporters to see!

Then there was the ferocious tackling & intent, so different from last week's effort against the Crows. Even prompting some hilarious moments through the match, with Wet Toast supporters coming here and crying that we were playing too rough for a preseason match! .... Gold!

Then there was the team running, streaming the ball through the centre corridor and along the wings

Butters was doing Butters things, but Rozee was elite, so different to the captain he was last year

Drew, who everyone thought was now depth, played like a demon at stoppages and link plays

JHF completed the entire game, and was such a rock up forward. considering his pre-season so far, we are in for a treat as he gets full-game fitness.

Jack Watkins was a head-turner. His effort & intent was at 110% ... Clearly showing he wasnt drafted just to try hang on to Butters!

Some of the young guys in Mackinlay, Ramm, Lorenz, Zadow et-al, all had some nice moments, and continued their development.

What I also liked, is that after we got away to a strong 8 goals to zero start, and we did the "Port Thing' and slowed down to allow them back in to the game, we lifted as a team, lit the afterburners, and wiped them off the field in an 11 goal quarter, Something I havent seen in 20 years! Last year we would have scraped home with a 10 point win!

Such an enjoyable game to watch

The Carr has started!

Well said (actually well said)

I really liked seeing us pressure the ball carrier around the midfield instead of letting them run at us in waves and hoping our 15+ in the D50 could hold off the onslaught.

Will be really interesting to see how we go against a good team that doesn’t give up the corridor so easily.
The crows was a good example. We moved the ball slowly and they clogged everything up.
