I would like to hope that the women’s league could fund itself if it’s gonna promise these big payments etc. What are the chances?
I have no problem in freezing the men’s cap and subsidising the AFLW so that the commercial reality is fast trackedI would like to hope that the women’s league could fund itself if it’s gonna promise these big payments etc. What are the chances?
The better the AFLW players are paid the better the level of player and the standard of play. That will generate its own tv revenue, sponsorship and gate takings. We either wait for it to gradually get better or give it a leg up.
Long term the competition will be viable with decent salaries. They need a hand if we want it sooner.
I am also walking the walk. My wife will be getting for Christmas the gift of time. Time with me.
. Just paid for her and my membership to go to the AFLW games together.

Fremantle and West Coast will unveil their prized number one draft picks in Tuesday’s AFLW practice match with both clubs naming near full-strength squads. SEE THE FULL TEAMS

Fremantle and West Coast will unveil their prized number one draft picks in Tuesday’s AFLW practice match with both clubs naming near full-strength squads.
Eagle Charlie Thomas, WA’s first picked at the 2021 draft and key position Docker Amy Franklin (pick 14) will both get their first taste of senior football after being named in extended squads.
The Eagles have named their entire playing list bar Kellie Gibson who is recovering from a minor ankle injury.
While the 29-strong squad bodes well for West Coast’s overall list health three weeks out from the start of the season, it appears round one selection is far from guaranteed and every player will have the chance to put their hand up under the watchful eye of new coach Michael Prior.
Off-season recruit Evie Gooch will also face her former side for the first time, the ex-Docker impressing in defence this pre-season.
Former Giant Aimee Schmidt will make her unofficial Eagles debut while draftees Courtney Rowley, Sarah Lakay, Emily Bennett and Beth Schilling are also set for their first taste of senior football.
Ashton Hill also makes her long-awaited return to football after missing the 2021 season continuing to recover from a knee reconstruction.
The Dockers will be without former captain Kara Antonio for the clash but have otherwise named a full-strength squad.
Emma O’Driscoll (finger), draftee Makaela Tuhakaraina and Tiah Toth will also miss the pre-season clash.
The race to snap up a forward line spot in the absence of Ashley Sharp and Sabreena Duffy (both on the inactive list) is on with the likes of Mikayla Morrison, Aine Tighe, and Ann McMahon battling it out to partner regulars Gemma Houghton, Roxy Roux and Gabby O’Sullivan.
The match will mark Hayley Miller’s first competitive clash as captain while reigning AFLW best and fairest Kiara Bowers is ready to pick up where she left off.
Dana East, Sarah Wielstra, Jess Low and Airlie Runnalls are also in contention for a round one debut after joining the Dockers via the 2021 draft.
Tuesday will mark West Coast and Fremantle’s only dress rehearsal before round one kicks off on January 7.
The match kicks off at 5:30pm and will be livestreamed.
