From the moment she got drafted I assumed Painter would just go straight in the guts, but you might be right on the money here. Her and Kavanagh gonna be fighting for inside mid minutes this year unless they wanna be cute with her and play her in the forward line for spells.
I sort of assumed the same, but when you lay it out. If Roberts isnt forward, she has to start in the middle. You would think Lewis will as well, and Drennan was bought in specifically to replace McCarthy in the middle. So I think that is the core of our centre square starting mids. Painter is an inside mid primarily, so isnt playing wing. So, I think she will be one of the first in the rotations through the middle.

There's so many options this year, and I reckon the coaching staff aren't sure where everyone's best positions are. So we could see quite a lot of shuffling around, especially in the first half of the season.

Roberts and Lewis are our most reliable mids, but with Rowley back, and Painter so strong inside, I wouldn't be surprised if Drennan takes one wing (she's fast), then Rentsch the other, or maybe even Hooker? Hooker's form is another variable they'll need to sort out - is she still fast enough to play wing at this level? And wouldn't you rather give those minutes to a younger midfielder anyway, who will form the future of the midfield?

But then, given how they like to roll different players through the middle for a while, then rest them elsewhere -- Roberts and Painter are also very good forwards (Painter's the same height), so probably they'll both spend some time forward, and I'm sure the coaches would like to find some midfield time for Kavanagh, too, as I'm not sure she fits into back or forward lines as easily as Rentsch fit into the backline last year.

The two I expect to get eventually squeezed out of the midfield rotation are Britton and Bushby -- they're both good, but I don't think they're good enough to hold their spots against what's coming, and we can't play everyone. We'll know the AFLW's really improving when even good players can't get a game.

But it'll be intriguing to see where it all settles down, and who ends up where. Hopefully by the end of the year, everyone will still be fit, and will have a much better idea of where they all fit.

WEST Coast is set to be cautious with its stars in the lead-in to round one, with newly named co-captain Bella Lewis and Ella Roberts unlikely to feature in match simulation against Fremantle this weekend.

It's understood the pair will be managed due to a few niggles, with an aim to be ready for round one against Gold Coast, if not next week's practice match with the Western Bulldogs.

Hard-running midfielder Ali Drennan is working through a knock to her shoulder, while draftee key back Charlotte Riggs broke her wrist several weeks ago, but is expected to be around the mark for round one.

Recruit Annabel Johnson is a chance to make her club debut in round one, having suffered a torn ACL in August last year following her move from Geelong. She is set to provide a cool head in defence alongside co-captain Charlie Thomas.

Kayley Kavanagh, a first-round draft pick in 2023, is also tracking well after her own knee reconstruction, while Dana Hooker, who missed last season due to pregnancy, is absolutely flying, and played a handful of WAFLW games just before pre-season began to regain some touch.

They can’t name an actual squad?

They can’t add more than a throwaway line about Lewis, Roberts and Drennan missing? Are any/all of them likely to be available for the next scratchy? Round one?

Yes, it's very poor from the media department - nothing! Even a fart in a wet bag would be better than what we get! Lift your game WCE.

Recap of this mornings scratchy. As far as scratchies go I only really care how the first years and those who're returning from ACL's go. Apparently Johnson was great first game back so that's a big tick and Painter being listed as one of the best, so that's double ticks.

Bella Lewis, Ella Roberts, Alison Drennan, Jessica Rentsch and Belinda Smith and Riggs all didn't play.

They also misspelled Schilling, and listed Swan as one of our best players.

Highlights from the weekend scratchy. A couple nice little passages from Dalgleish in there. The quick hands for the Gibson goal and the mark and quick kick to Gibson again at the end. Getting stuff like that from our last pick in the draft is good sh!t.

Rowley looking up and about and Roux seems to have found some fire 🔥. Lots to be optimistic about with the young talent coming through 👌

More confirmation that Painter was playing in the middle, and Hooker was on the wing. They don't mention Rowley, but she was the most prominent Eagle in the highlights package they showed, so we can guess all three of them will be midfielders this season.

And our main three midfielders from last season were sitting this one out (Roberts, Lewis and Drennan), so put them all together on game day, that's by far the best midfield we've ever had. Now we just need to find out where Rentsch will be playing. I'm hoping on the other wing.
