The fortnight of trading has ended for 2005 and during this fortnight the Western Vultures acquired some good young players to help the Vultures climb back up the AFL TM Ladder.

The Following were Traded

Matthew Robbins
Daniel Cross
Jordan Russell
Pick 36
Tom Logan
Quentin Lynch
Pick 46
Pick 4
Malcolm Michael
Ben Eckermann

The Following were Acquired

Chris Newman
Shane Tuck
Nathan Bock
Marc Bullen
Daniel Ward
Michael Johnson
Kade Simpson
Brent Stanton
Roger Hayden
Robert Haddrill
Pick 7

It was tough to let go of young superstar Daniel Cross and upcomer Jordan Russell (Our 1st round pick from 2004 Draft) but we believed that Shane Tuck was going to offer us more in the midfield and we were desperate for some KP defenders which we got in Nathan Bock. Trading Pick #4 was something coach, sante was looking to do from the beginning of the trade fortnight as 2005's draft has been earmarked 'weaker' than previous so sante took the chance and traded away Pick #4 for a young star in Brent Stanton and another KP defender in Robert Haddrill (To take Michael's spot) and young small defender Roger Hayden.

The Official Trades

1) Matthew Robbins for Chris Newman
2) Daniel Cross for Shane Tuck
3) Jordan Russell for Nathan Bock
4) Pick 36 for Pick 46, Marc Bullen and Daniel Ward
5) Tom Logan and Quentin Lynch for Kade Simpson
6) Pick 46 for Michael Johnson
7) Pick 4 for Brent Stanton, Roger Hayden and Robert Haddrill
8) Mal Michael and Ben Eckermann for Pick 7

Vultures swoop on young guns
By Kenneth Noisewater, Herald Sun

After a disappointing 2005 season for the Western Vultures, coach, Sante took a very aggresive approach to the trade period. It was quite obvious that the Vultures were in need for some young players to create a group to play as one team for the next 10 or so years and to lead the Vultures to a much waited premiership.

After ending the 2005 season on one solitary win and the wooden spoon, the Vultures needed to take a good, hard look at the list and make the hard changes. They did this by delisting six players. These six were Ben Harrison, Daniel Bandy, Brett Johnson, Ben Haynes, Kyle Archibald and Cameron Hunter.

Once the trade period started, the Vultures got into it straight away by trading for Chris Newman who is set to take a midfield role in 2006 and beyond. It was quite clear from that first trade that the Vultures were looking for young midfielders ready to fire in the next two ir three years. Adding to Chris Newman were, Shane Tuck, Brent Stanton and Kade Simpson who should all feature prominently in the Vultures midfield next year and for years to come. It was also rumoured that they made big plays for Amon Buchanan and Daniel Harris but were unsuccessful in their bids.

We had a brief interview just hours after the trade period ended with coach, Sante of the Western Vultures about his views and opinions on the trade period and how he believes the Vultures went and what the Vulture fans should look forward to in 2006 and beyond.

Kenneth Noisewater: You went in fairly aggresively in the trade period and pulled off some big trades, was that your strategy prior to the trade period?

Sante: Well, we knew the list needed some new life and changes to it, so we targeted the younger midfielders in a hope that we can create a tight group for the next 8 or so years and become a real powerhouse and maybe in the short - term see some finals action if these younger players perform early.

KN: You definately did that. Could you say that currently, the Vultures are in a rebuilding stage and it'll take two to three years to get back to the top?

Sante: Yes, we are rebuilding in a way. However, we still want success in the near future.

KN: You're in the process of rebuilding but you still traded for experienced players such as, Daniel Ward and Robert Haddrill. What was the reasoning behind this?

Sante: You can't take kids out every week and expect them to perform and survive at the highest level. We need the experienced players out there to give the kids direction and leadership out on the field. We also needed some depth after facing a few season ending injuries in 2005, we didn't have the personnel to replace the likes of Darcy and Hudson. Haddrill was added in the deal in which we traded Pick #4 for Stanton, Hayden and Haddrill, who is needed to replace Mal Michael. Mal has talked to us before the trade period and stated that he wanted to be traded so we knew we needed a new Full Back and we already needed a CHB too.

KN: Well, Thankyou for your time Sante and good luck in 2006.

Sante: No worries, it was a pleasure.
