We've gone backwards on the ladder every year since 2010 except 2018

Not a great look for Buckley. Regressed according to the ladder each year against the previous year except for 2018.
Bucks began coaching in 2012

An interesting comparison is with Clarkson....since 2012 Hawthorn has regressed (or stayed in the same ladder position, 15 and 16 both Hawks and us were unchanged.

The exception for Hawks is 2018, they jumped from outside of finals to top4 just like us again.

Wow, I have to admit, this thread generated a lot more passionate and robust discussion than the obviously somewhat misleading statement I based it on deserved. :). Good discussion from both sides of the fence - I can see logic to most of the points made in the previous pages.

My actual position to be honest is that Bucks has done a good (not great) job with our team (mostly recently), but I'm not convinced he is good enough to take us to the next step. And I am a big supporter of his and will be sad when he loses his job at end of 2021.

I am referring to the post-finals ladder. Or if you say there is no such thing, fine. I can change the language to being the post-finals finishing position if that phrase is better for you. The phrasing doesn't change the fact (with the exception of the 12th and 12th finishes as pointed out previously). So I guess a better way to describe it would be to say that we only improved our post finals ladder position in one year of the ten.

All I’m trying to highlight is that using ladder or finishing positions is a really poor method of reviewing the years. It penalises over achieving.

By your logic, it would have been better to just make finals in 2018, rather than make the grand final and then make the prelim in 2019. That would show year on year growth from 2017-2019.

Post 2018, if we hadnt reverted to the slow ineffective brand of footy that was such a hallmark of his pre 2018 coaching, I'd agree with you.

The one year where we've looked a different more effective team is the one where Bucks missed much of pre season and took a back seat. I find that pretty hard to ignore.

It's was actually the 2019 pre season when he took a back seat
