What’s the worst trade your club has ever made?

Scrolled through whole thread to see that this has not been posted - comes up every few years in threads like these...

Classic smack-down by a long departed (form BF) poster Weaver to a Carlton nuffy who suggested Tigers #18 for McMahon was worst trade ever... - read this and enjoy:
McMahon kicked the winning goal against Melbourne, which allowed us to take dusty at 3. So it's 18 for McMahon and dusty.

That counts right......

My why was why Collingwood would do that trade even without hindsight. A first pick downgrade, early third round pick and a meh player for a meh player with severe injuries.
Mick Malthouse love in with ex-Eagles.

Andrew Williams
Scott Cummings
Chad Rintoul

At Geelong:

Mitch Clark - Could have been something but....
Gary Sidebottom - remembered for "missing" the bus for the final
Brian Peake - is it any wonder he earned the nickname, "Pasties"
Marcus Drum - did not play a senior game
Justin Murphy - quite possibly the most hated Geelong recruit ever. Check out Wikipedia on Murphy. No mention of Geelong! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Murphy_(Australian_rules_footballer)
Hamish McIntosh - injury plagued
Mark Jackson played for your sorry lot as well after Mal Brown sorted him out the best he could at South Fremantle. Jacko was stupid enough to take on Maurice Rioli at training in the ring one day with gloves on and Maurice gave him a hiding. They didn't tell him beforehand that Maurice had fought in the ring in a proper organised fight.

Haha never knew that.

Hard bunch of bastards running round the wafl in that era.....boucher, rioli, baz campbell etc

Because the pick downgrade probably wasn't going to affect who they planned on selecting in the draft, and Morrison was one of "Mick's boys" from West Coast, who he was familiar with and believed in (similar to Collingwood also bringing in ex-Eagles Chad Rintoul, Andrew Williams, and Scott Cummings in the same era).

Bombers fans, the Mark Williams trade was not the worst trade we ever made. Not even close, in fact it worked out very well for us.

We traded Lovett for 16
We traded 16, 42 and Jay Nash (LOL) for Williams, 24 and 33.
We used 24 for Carlisle. Who we got great football from and then traded for Pick 5.

So effectively Lovett, who would never play again, for pick 5
Probably one of the best trades we've ever done.

At the time last year it was the Pick 2 for Lachie Weller and Pick 41. Couldn't believe it was real when I first heard it.
But one year later, Lachie, who will be a Sun for life, has come third in our B&F in his first year after a slow start and only looks like getting better, and we also snapped up young Charlie Ballard at 41 who looks really promising as a tall utility / midfielder at 195cm and a future 200 gamer, who loves the club and has just re-signed until the end of 2021.
Footy is a funny game, things can turn very quickly. Feels like a great trade for us at the moment.

Meanwhile the pick swap you did with West Coast is looking like the worse trade of the last 5 years

Are you asking why this is a messed-up trade?

If so, because of hindsight more than anything.

Collingwood gave up:
* Pick 7
* Pick 37
* Bo Nixon

Collingwood gained:
* Pick 10 - used on Chris Egan (barely ever got on the park)
* Chad Morrison (who at this time had had 2 knee recos and played I think 20 games at Collingwood before retiring)

In return, West Coast and Hawthorn gained 2 A-Grade players.

Plus Morrison got busted drink-driving and the Pies copped a $200k fine from sponsor TAC. Then the sponsorship was scrapped entirely when future-Eagle Sharrod Wellingham got done for it too. Sorry Collingwood.

A recent contender

Gold Coast : Dion Prestia for pick 7 (Scrimshaw) which becomes Scrimshaw + 4th rounder for future 3rd rounder

Prestia + 4th rounder for future 3rd rounder is the end result

Deledio for a first and third, apart from the treloar trade we have been a bit weak and amateurish at trading, especially since SOS left. I think we need an ex playing legend to do the job, not no hopers
