I see on Johnson 26 that Chipper is out of contract and does not look like getting into the West Coast mid field surely he would be worth a late draft pick (in the 30's to 40s) He has pace enough courage and skill but lacks a bit of size

There is a disease which afflicts Collingwood supporters. It is called Whereareyoudaics-itis.

Some affected Collingwood supporters latch on to the nearest bit of flash and cling to it like a security blanket, without being aware that they are deluded.

Comments from patients include:

"Robbie Ahmat is the new Daicos!"

"Hose Houlihan is gunna be a gun forward!"

"Leon Davis is cut out for the midfield!"

And of course, "Chipper Adkins is a fast gun and has silky kicking skills!".

All of the above comments are absolutely, without question, wrong. I reiterate; WRONG!!

Adkins was, despite being an unfortunate victim of the OP, even at his fittest moments, a patchy player.

His trademark is one blinding half every 6 games. In this half, he looks every bit the AFL player. Has the ball on a string, gets goals, looks quick.

For the other 90%, he is so far below AFL level it's laughable. This is a fact! Remember, if you deny it, you have Whereareyoudaics-itis!!

If ya dun believe me, and you want to see an example of what I'm talking about, keep an eye out for the Weegirls first game against the Semons on Fox if ya have it. Would have racked up a mere 10 kicks, for 10 turnovers. This is not an exaggeration, this is what happened. And they were turnovers which looked like he was intentionally kicking the ball to the opposition.

Fact is, he is a bad kick and he's less consistent than Leon Davis (remember that Leon is also inconsistent and generally crap, and if you think otherwise, please consult a physician).

He will be delisted so u cud pick him up in the PSD if ya like.

If we are trying to build a midfield bigger and better then West Coast why would we give game time to players who are not in 'their' best side...hence my longwinded point being why consume oursellves with second rate players who are simply not good enough.

I'm with Figjam.....
Adkins still has a major deficiency in missing targets - regularly
He hasn't recaptured that form from 2000 even over there.

I'm glad we are not in the frame for Steven Armstrong also.

He signed a new contract this year so you dont need to worry :D

His kicking looks good but like his game, it is inconsistant. He is a penetrating kick and can do some awesome worm burners. But just doesnt do enough, often enough. He is very popular and offers good depth.

He was a kid who played too few games due to lack of weight and injury. MM doesn’t like ‘em unaccountable so he suffered for that as well. He’s better than Williams that’s for sure. I’d rather have him than O’Bree, Morrsion and co who will stay until they retire. These guys have similar deficies but in slow motion. He won’t ever be a gun but he can play and would be better on our list that plenty of others that survived him.

He is best off the bench, coming on late in the term to provide some run and momentum. If he found some consistency he would be a good player. My guess is that he is going to be traded.

BTW, whats with the board name change? :)

At least O'Bree has consistency.
Oh please! How many good games since round 1 2000? Half a season in 2000, a couple last year as a half forward come midfielder and a few this year as a midfielder. If there is anything he is consistent at it is turnovers. Slow, poor one on one, poor decision maker, sloppy disposal and suspect under pressure. Players like O’Bree represent the problem with how we play and why we play as we do. He gets the ball runs a semi circle, stops, looks and kicks to whoever is in his path whether they are coverd or not. In the last 2 years he has had the chance to step up and become a front line midfielder and he has fallen so short of the mark it isn’t funny.

I don't disagree, as I dun like OB either!

I just want to emphasise how ******** I think Adkins is. And he is ********! But people see his slick passes, and forget that for the most part, he struggles to hit the side of a barn. It's the footy supporters equivalent of "Beer Goggles".

We had this conversation years ago. Nothing has changed my opinion. In fact it's been proven correct!

He's not any better than Williams. Stop raving about him, he's not good enough and never was.

Williams didnt work out but Adkins would have been no better.

Not raving. He’s no gun that’s for sure. I just thought and still think he has pace which we lack and a willingness to use it. He is similar to Rhyce Shaw who I’ve always been a supporter of. I don’t think he’s a gun either. If you are going to play suspect players anyway, because that’s what you stock you list with, it makes sense that you at least sprinkle a mix of strengths and weaknesses among them.

Figjam my point has always been that it was a dud swap. Just another from the second worst judge of football talent that has ever coached Collingwood.

You have in the past.

A dud for a dud trade is not as disastrous as a dud for a quality player trade. You had this trade clearly in the second category where clearly it was always in the first.

Adkins trademark while at Collingwood was grabbing the ball at explosive speed evading 2 or three tacklers only to deliberately run in the direction of the closest player to try and get around him but he would always end up smashed in a hip and shoulder or get caught for holding the ball.
This happened at least once a game.

I think you are exaggerating what I have previously said but I did and still do think Adkins can play. Quality is a bit over the top and I am less enthusiastic about him than I was 3 years ago. Nevertheless he is a better prospect on our list than Williams could ever be with his pace, heart and skill level. The concerning thing about it for me is that MM looks at players and places far too much emphasis on their personality and can't judge their football ability objectively. Mal Michael is a classic example and there are plenty on the intake side. Having taken in duds he keeps playing them long after us mug punters can tell they are not up to it. seriously, this is a coach on $800k of our money and he not only takes Williams but he plays him consistently to the point where Collingwood supporters get so frustrated they start to take it out on the player who is only doing his best. Anyway, back to Adkins. We could use his pace just as we can use Rhyce Shaw’s pace.

Mark your hindsight theories about what MM could have and should have done leave me speechless.

Heres a post by you from Jan 2003 saying who will be the future of the club

I have to disagree.
While McGough is a mile from Williams at this stage the kid played senior football and got a BOG following a two brownlow vote game in his first two games before he was allowed to get a licence. He has some flaws for sure but so did Carey at 17. I doubt he will ever be a great kick and he will never be pacey. Remamber Tony Shaw. Couldn't run, couldn't kick, couldn't mark. Had one skill. A footy brain which allowed him to get the footy and use it within his capabilities. That is what I see in McGough. In this age of athletes a footballer can still be a great player. To say he cannot attack or defend is a little harsh. At 17 he just went and got a kick from game one. I can't honestly see what more a 17 with his body type could possibly have done. Sure he got beated as a defender against Freo but he was a 17 year old with a couple of games under his belt. How would Buckley ahve gone in that game at 17? He'll probably play 50 games before the age of 21 when his peers will be getting regular starting gigs with 20 bit part games under their belts.

I see him a lot like I do Cloke. They have similar limitations but similar strengths. They may not improve as much as some others and may never be seen as superstars but the reality is if they improve just a little in 2003 they will have an impact. They have already had one in 2002 and to imagine zero improvement in these kids is a little difficult. Second year blues is always a possibility but MM has been pretty good at managing that to date. Given they rely on reading the play as opposed to athletic ability they could easilyl play well past 30 years of age.

IMO these 2 with Lonnie and Didak represent near certainties for significant imporvement and real impact in 2003. Cole is a maybe at this stage. Davidson is a maybe and this crop of draftess are unknown quantities. The good thing is that if noone improves at al we have a more effective outfit than we started 2002 with. Just add Woewodin and a little development of the aforementioned and we can start talking premierships in March like we used to.

J Cloke Lonie McGough Cole Woewodin and Didak are your picks for the future of Collingwood. Pretty much a "Malthouse list".
