I had two boys play soccer too until about 12. The also played footy all the way from Auskick and still do and they've just moved in to seniors. They dropped out of soccer for a few reasons: it was expensive and a lot of the culture of the clubs were expressly hostile to Australian football which sot of wore them down a bit. Plus the clubs were plagued by the elite coaching spivs constantly pressuring kids to signup to holiday programs etc.
My daughter is mostly a netballer but is giving soccer a go this year. The club in Melbourne's eastern suburbs has great facilities, probably better than most of the junior footy clubs in the area. That said the booming girls playing footy has been unbelievable, although anecdotally at the expense of a few of the netball clubs. She'll probably give footy a go too if soccer doesn't grab her.
Yep, I’ve had a similar experience. I was reasonably invested in both the A-League and the Socceroos. The borderline deranged attitude towards Australian Football typically displayed Australian soccer’s true believers just turned me off eventually. I still taken an interest in soccer, but it’s waned quite a bit.

Ha - only hardliners say "Australian football." So easy to read between the lines with some ppl.
Never felt any feeling towards afl from fans from other codes. Afl is the one on war footing for some reason.

Yeah the way the AFL chairman went after the NRL today was just terrible. Good to see you're calling the AFL out on it!

Momentum is building (not just in NSW, with the Pre-Commitment of Maximum Losses' Card) to eradicate the scourge of vile poker machines in Australia- not only to save pokie addicts, but to attack criminals & tax cheats laundering moneys through poker machines.

Whilst some AFL & GR AF clubs have them, eradication, or at least significant reductions of pokie useage, would most severely effect some NRL clubs & GR RL clubs in NSW, Qld. (& ACT- NRL Raiders)- who are FAR more reliant.

Brisbane Times F. Caldwell 19.2.19

"Queenslanders lose record $2.4b to poker machines" in 12 months.

Calls for "...pokies to be phased out...".

The Age N. Towell 26.2.21

Towell said

"Losses on Victorian poker machines have risen...with gamblers blowing $239m in January.
One of the Sate's leading gambling experts says money laundering by criminals is likely to be at least partly behind the increased losses...

Campaigners are lobbying the State govt. to extend its Royal Commission into Crown Casino & [also into] other pubs & clubs across the State...

...The Alliance For Gambling Reform says the Vic. Royal Commission should also look whether pubs & clubs across Melb. & the State were being exploited by criminals & tax cheats seeking to launder their tainted money".

newdaily. com A. Tate 15.4.20

"...ACT Chief Minister A. Barr has offered community clubs in Canberra $15k to hand back poker machine licenses [for each machine]".

Reverend T. Costello said, re poker machine addicts & losses

"The NRL...are the worst of the worse...The truth is that pokies have been our blind spot...The rest of the world looks at us and says $13b a year lost, 20% of the world's pokies [are in Australia]. How could they? (Emphases, & words in brackets, mine)".

That's crazy if true. To have 20% of the world's pokies here in Australia is nuts.

Japan has a lot of pokies too. So does the US.

A problem soccer solves by having almost no Aboriginal players.

Drive them out in juniors, job done.

On moto g(6) plus using BigFooty.com mobile app
very sad if that's the case as Indigenous Australian people have excelled in many sports such as Aussie rules, rugby league basketball, boxing and other athletic sports

I was taking liberties.

Not about the almost no Aboriginal players bit though. Im in the SouthWest and Aboriginal kids abound, and they abound in sport, and especially, they abound in footy. Put 2 kids through years of junior soccer, cannot recall ever coming across even 1 Aboriginal kid, and thats not hyperbole, I mean 0.

Couldn't really tell you why though. But this doesn't invalidate the point, its easy not to be racist to Aboriginal kids in junior soccer, if it doesn't have any.

1. Re the increase in AFLW ratings, general skill levels etc.

"...with the increases in attendances (Paid?. Otherwise, not in 2021, due to covid crowd concerns & limits, & interruptions- my words), digital consumption, Club memberships, on-field performance reaching new highs in season 2021".

"...AFLW membership has reached record nos., ...23,666...to eclipse 20,849 in 2020...TV ratings up 3%...with 1.1m digital users engaging on AFLW platforms...".

The creation of the AFLW, played in the off-season, is providing a major boost for the AFL in particular, & GR AF in general- including in NSW, ACT, & Qld.
Female GR contact RL & RU, whilst having significant growth in NSW, ACT, & Qld. are miniscule in comparison to GR female AF nos. in NSW, ACT, & Qld.

2. H. Cerezo, a specialist female distance runner & steeplechaser from Sydney's NS, & a Swans' Academy player said, re her reasons for switching to AF

"It's a combination of every other sport out there. I love the fact you have to run, kick, handball, & tackle. It's unique (My emphasis). And having to bounce the ball when you run is a new thing".

A microcosm for females' reasons for playing AF.

3. Qld.'er T. Harris is having a documentary, made by Amazon, on her life. She is 23 y.o.!

She already has a 3.3m bronze statue of her famous, "hyper-extension" super high kicking style in Melbourne's CBD Federation Square.

Sign o' the times.

Harris kicked a torpedo, measured at 61.5m, from the Yarra bank in the 2019 pre Grand Final Distance Kicking contest, defeating 7 male AFL stars- she was the only female contestant.
She is one of the very few AFLW players who has taken numerous hangers.
Harris is also a professional boxer.

"Amazon Prime described Harris as 'one of the world's most exciting & inspirational athletes of our generation' ".

To see the vision of Harris' 61.5m torpedo, & to hear J. Dunstall's hilarious comments following it ("Right now, there's another 10 blokes in the tent going 'OMG, we're in trouble. We are in serious trouble. This is the purest spiral' ".

The A-league is unique in a way. But there are problems. One of them is that football federation Australia or the FFA are poorly running the game.

Or they are subjected to the most absurdly inflated expectations by hard core Australian soccer fans?

Nope that's only a small problem.

I didn't mind the A-league coverage in channel 10 when they had it.

A-league should of done a revenue deal with 10 where both A-league and channell 10 both got 50per cent each of the revenue. Or at the very worst, let the A-league pay 3-5 million a year for that Saturday slot to show the Saturday game and advertise it.

Hence why I liked that tv deal from 2013-17 where the FFA got 40 million a year. Actually it was 37 million as 3 million was spent on advertising.

When the FFA got that next deal after that from 2017-2023 where the original deal was 56 Millon a year, 5-10 Millon of that cash should.of been spent on promoting and advertising the A-league.

Nope, that's precisely the problem.

It doesn't matter who is running Australian soccer, they'll eventually get torn down and scapegoated for unmet delusions of grandeur from the "true believers"

1. COLLAPSE OF 2019 GREATER BRISBANE JNR CLUB MALE CONTACT RU. MAJOR PROBLEMS FOR RA.

Whilst RU has been a small sport in its heartland Brisbane & SEQ since c. 1920, the significant, long term decline in male contact RU nos. has led to there being only 124 male contact teams, U12-U18 inclusive, in 2019. This is extraordinarily low in a heartland city of c. 2.4m in 2019.

2. Re post#561 above, on Brisbane GPS "refusing to allow kids to play the sport" ie full season, GPS-wide AF comp.
On 19.3.21, the response of the GPS to the AFL's concern was "At this stage, the GPS will not be commenting".

The Brisbane GPS schools agreed in late 2019 to introduce a GPS-wide full season (c. 8 weeks) AF comp., open for all class levels, at all their schools. This was a first. AFLQ agreed to provide coaching & equipment support etc. There was no no GPS AF comp. in 2020.

Previously to this announcement, there had been some GPS intra-school & inter school AF matches, by some GPS schools.

The GPS have reneged on this agreement in 2021, & there will, again, be no GPS-wide inter school AF full season comps.

The GPS has clear evidence & knowledge (from student surveys, willingness of many GPS students to play in the few, minor AF matches & activities in GPS schools that did occur) that there are many students keen to play AF.
This decision is, obviously, based on bias against AF, & Australian culture -to deliberately prop up the foreign game of RU, & is a disgrace.

The major decline in GR male contact RU in Qld., NSW, & ACT, & the decline of Aust. Super Rugby & Wallaby sides, may have caused the GPS schools (& the backlash from the angry, anti AF GPS Old Boys' associations!), to renege on their 2019 agreement.

1.
Sorry if you have posted this previously, but how many RL & AFL junior teams in SEQ?
I have provided the details, with the appropriate links & RLBJ & SEQJFL fixtures for 2020, earlier in this thread. I suggest you peruse those.

Player nos.- not team nos.- are actually much more relevant & accurate, if doing an analysis, since RL teams (inc. Tag, & contact girls' teams!) have fewer players, cf AF teams.
I also provided the Rugby League Ipswich jnr. comp. team nos. (Ipswich has its own RL comp., & Ipswich is legally part of Greater Brisbane)

IIRC, the QRL stated, on 26.7.20, the Rugby League Brisbane Jnrs. comp. (Greater Brisbane, excluding Ipswich), for U6-U12 inclusive, had c. 5000 jnr players, in 498 teams. This is shockingly low, for a RL heartland city of c. 2.2m. U13- U18 were FAR lower than 5000!
Also, c. 10%+ of these 498 teams were non-contact League tag: many RL clubs also run their own League tag teams.

AFLQ announced recently (linked by me) it had a record c.13,700 club comp. jnr players (U8-U17), in the SEQJFL (for the Gold Coast-Brisbane-Sunshine Coast corridor) in 2020. (13,700 excludes the many thousands of Club Auskick players 5y.o.-8.y.o).

2. Dr H. Fujak has just released his book "Code Wars- The Battle For Fans, Dollars, & Survival"- the book launch was on 17.3.21, at the North Sydney Oval.

The publisher is Fair Play Publishing- a Sydney-based specialist publisher of books on Australian soccer, the monthly soccer magazine "Play On", "Football Insider" podcast, soccer blogs & soccer websites etc. Fujak has spoken at several soccer functions etc.
Fujak previously did his Doctorate at the Uni. of Technology Sydney, was raised in Sydney, & now is a lecturer at Deakin Uni. (Burwood), Melb.

His book provides comprehensive, excellent analysis & research on the 4 football codes in Aust., their relative status & challenges, & future prospects.

AsiaFitnessToday News Network, in its book review, states

"Australia's Dr H. Fujak believes that the Australian Football league (AFL) is practically unassailable in its position at the centre of Australian football culture. Despite AFL's supremacy, 'Code Wars' does not attempt to say which football code is 'best' or 'worst'...".

It also states the book covers these areas (amongst others)

.Why the Melbourne and Sydney sporting cultures are so different.
.Why Wagga Wagga has produced so many elite athletes of multiple sports.
  • Will the AFL ultimately crush its competitors.
  • Whether concussion will one day wipe out contact football altogether.
  • Impacts of globalisation and technology on soccer
  • Unique sporting market in Australia
  • City and regional comparisons for Victoria and across Australia
  • How grassroots engagement is key to future success
  • Growth in women’s support of Rugby League
  • The top down approach of Rugby Union
  • Broadcasting rights and streaming war

This book is the best, in its breadth & level of detail, ever publicly published on the 4 football codes in Aust. It will be widely quoted, referenced etc.
There is enough material & breadth of topics in it to dominate c. 2 months of discussions on the BF Footy Industry forums! Hopefully, due to its vast array, some BF readers can buy it, & share their thoughts here- this massive tome has so many aspects covering the "Code Wars".

I am curious to discover if Dr Fujak has examined, across the 4 codes, the crucial issue of volunteers- a topic generally ignored/underrated in sporting academia.

The very large no. of GR hard working & committed volunteers (c.200k) in AF is, arguably, one of its greatest strengths. IMO (mainly from discussions with GR AF club committee members & volunteers- & fellow umpires), probably many of these volunteers are not only motivated by their love for the game, but also regard AF as a manifestation of Australian pride & nationalism.

NRL, State, & GR club RL officials have commented publicly numerous times that a shortage of volunteers is having a negative effect on GR (contact) RL nos., & sustaining clubs.

Usually when people with a soccer background try to write about the AFL, especially if they're from a Northern state, invariably they talk it down a bit and talk up how soccer is the sleeping giant waiting to explode because of participation, the world game, international investment, etc, etc.

Fujak has never come across as a cheerleader. Ive read a few of his works over the years to do with tv rights and business. He plays a straight bat. Might be one of the biggest genuine economic experts on sport in Australia
