The Nambour Hinterland AFC (in the interior region of the Qld. Sunshine Coast) is experiencing strong female & male growth in player nos.
Its AF ground had had a major $1.46m total replacement & upgrade, to cater for this growth.
I assume the female AF boom has, similar to many other GR AF grounds around Australia, directly assisted in these funds being made available.

The AFL contributed $150k to the new buildings, & the NHFC $10k.

State MP, & "Member for Nicklin Robert Skelton said the new facilities are vital so that clubs can keep pace with the growing popularity of their sports".

“Hinterland AFL Club has seen player numbers increase by 63 per cent over the last five years including a 30 per cent jump in junior numbers in 12 months,” Mr Skelton said.

“The old clubhouse has been demolished to make way for a modern clubhouse with dedicated male and female change rooms which will make a huge difference to a club that has played this season out of a six by three donga.”

Hinterland Blues (AF club) President Bruce Bell said the new facilities will provide a massive boost to their future growth and operations.

“Having four change rooms will make the girls more comfortable and increase female participation which is increasingly important as nearly a quarter of our players are female,” said Mr Bell.

The club has 120 senior players and 130 juniors including two senior men’s teams, one senior women’s team and nine junior teams with plans to add another senior men's team next season (My words in brackets, & emphases)".

1. Daily Telegraph P. Rothfield 12.10.21

Rothfield is calling for the NRL to very soon implement a long term, 30 years' Strategic Review; & it appears P. V'landys agrees- & V'landys highlights the need to "encourage & work participation" nos. as a focus of the Review.

P. V'landys said, re the NRL's long term aspirations

“I have no doubt every Sydney club will survive because we’re going to encourage and work participation to guarantee their futures. And expansion won’t stop with a 17th team in Brisbane [This implies if the NRL does not reverse the collapse of GR male contact RL nos. in NSW, ACT, & Qld., the future of some Sydney-based NRL clubs may be imperilled] "

Rothfield said

"Peter V'landys knows the importance of planning ahead.
The most magnificent finals series we’ve just witnessed has camouflaged the problems with the premiership in its current format.

This season we’ve had a record number of blowouts. From 192 games, a 117 of them (61 percent) had score line margins of 13 points or more.

The one thing expansion can’t do is level the playing field with the rosters [It appears that the severe decline in male GR contact RL nos. is causing depth of talent problems in the NRL- & makes expansion beyond 16 teams, re quality of NRL games, a significant problem].

If you picked the top 50 players in the competition it would be almost filled by six club clubs – Penrith, Storm, Souths, Roosters, Parramatta and Manly.

What about the other 10? (My emphases, & words in brackets)".

Covid has put a handbrake NRL strategic planning. But now it's time to look to the future, writes

The growth of female GR AF in NSW, ACT, & Qld. has been a phenomenon since the 2017 creation of the AFLW.
In the crucial, regd. female club & school player comp. participation nos., the AFLW has had, almost, the same effect as an additional 19th AFL men's team being added in NSW, ACT, or Qld. in 2017 (re female participation nos. only ie not inc. AFL Rights' $, private sponsorship $, crowd nos., & MSM coverage etc. in NSW, ACT, & Qld.).

Will this female GR AF growth be diminished by these new "inclusive" Uniform changes that NSW Netball is now introducing (which, I assume, will be introduced around Australia)? These Uniform changes are directly designed to increase netball's female participation nos.

Netball is now making its traditional, very short dresses & "skimpy" tops non-compulsory. NA is indicating this has been a deterrant to many females playing netball, negatively affecting their player nos. Shorts, leggings, & "long" tops will now be permitted.

Will this netball Uniform change now result in more girls playing netball?

Jessica Campbell, Women's Health site commentator, said

"...women’s uniforms are largely sexualised and for many, it’s far from inclusive. It makes a recent move by Netball Australia to unveil a new uniform cause for celebration. Just recently, Netball NSW unveiled a new range of apparel that offers players more flexibility and broadens the appeal of the game. The traditional netball dress might now be a thing of the past.

As Netball NSW CEO Tain Drinkwater explained to The Guardian, “Netball NSW believes that all participants should, as far as possible, be supported in wearing a uniform that allows them to participate in netball in the manner in which they feel most comfortable.”

Drinkwater added, “The key aim of this is to make sure we advance our position as a sport for people not just of all cultural backgrounds and gender identities, but all shapes and sizes too. It is clear that rigidity when it comes to clubs only allowing dresses is holding back our participation numbers (My emphases)".

A condition of the NRL granting the 17th license to The Dolphins was that the Dolphins agree to spend, in perpetuity, $2m pa (& I assume this $2m will increase each year with the CPI) specifically promoting GR RL "participation" in their Zone (Nthn. Brisbane, Moreton Bay, & Sunshine Coast).

The NRL is now in discussions with the other 16 remaining NRL clubs on a similar proposal that these Clubs also spend significantly (each c. $2m pa?) on GR RL.

SMH A. Proszenko

"The NRL will consider granting existing clubs perpetual licences on the condition that they follow the lead of the new Queensland franchise and agree to spend a mandated amount of money on growing the participation of the sport.

smh.com.au
Long-term future of NRL clubs could hinge on guarantee of junior investment
The new Queensland team is expected to spend a mandated amount of money on promoting participation – and existing clubs may need to do the same...".

The NRL HQ, for the 3 years 2017-2019 inc., spent c. $110 m (many would say, re male contact nos., unproductively) in total, on GR RL "community development".
I assume this will continue, after the NRL (& sport in Australia) returns to normal, pre covid revenues & conditions etc. (The NRL made redundant- a short term measure?- many Development Officers, in its 2020 covid cutbacks)

Should the other Clubs agree to this GR permanent major funding condition that was imposed on the Dolphins, FAR more funding, therefore, will be spent on GR RL.

Female contact RL nos. have had significant growth since 2017, off a small base.

One must assume that it would improve male contact RL nos. in NSW, ACT, & Qld.- but what % would male contact RL nos. grow by? And how much would it limit the strong growth of GR AF that has been occurring in NSW, ACT, & Qld. since c. 2012?

BBT, any spend has to come from somewhere else

Some clubs would already be spending that much on the elite pathways / grass roots. The ones that aren't wouldn't have the coin to.

I wouldn't be expecting some massive step change

Dr C. Ordway, an Assistant Professor in Sports Management, provides an academic's analysis on how to ameliorate the NRL's self-professed "image problem" with, almost constant, poor player behaviour headlines.

Essentially, she believes the players must become more accountable for their poor behaviour, with appropriate penalties being applied ie heavy penalties will be a true deterrant, & will reverse the poor behaviour of the transgressors (who are a very small minority in the NRL- but are causing much PR damage).

The AFL has also had many scandals over the last 20 years-but not with the same regularity of the NRL; or, generally, seriousness (eg excluding the Essendon doping scandal).

1. Courier Mail T. Mayne P. Bardel 30.10

They said the NRL will consider an 18th club in Qld. in the future (assuming The Dolphins are successful)- "to combat the AFL threat"; & the AFL is "making headway" in Brisbane's SW. N. Livermore, Director of the western corridor Brisbane Jets (Ipswich- based team) Bid, said the Bid could be resurrected- "if the NRL is serious about growing participation" in Brisbane's SW.

QRL Chairman, B. Hatcher, said AF is not a threat to RL "in the next one or 2 years", but is also supportive of protecting Brisbane's SW from potential AF threats in the future.

2. This is another, different article, from 15.10, on the need for the NRL to strengthen RL in the Brisbane western corridor (includes Logan & Springfield areas etc.)
It is behind a paywall - can anyone open, & please post the relevant parts here.

Courier Mail/ Herald-Sun 15.10

If the NRL does expand to 3 NRL teams in Greater Brisbane, it would be a major boost for the NRL & GR RL- & thwart the AFL's growth ambitions in SEQ.

You keep saying this but never produce anything to back it up.
The major growth in Australian Football in Queensland has been linked to on-field success.
You need at least one of the Queensalnd AFL teams firing to keep the momentum going
plus the ongoing AFL investment.

The same goes for the NRL development and they seem to be making all the right noises a.t.m.
but we'll just have to wait and see.

1. abc.net T. Holmes 23.10.21

The latest Cricket Australia 2020/21 census of its registered player nos. show there has been an alarming drop of 24% overall- but female nos. are up 17% (& cricket was much less affected by covid, cf winter GR football codes, for most of its summer season).

Also, Holmes article has AusPlay survey nos. for 2019. Whilst AusPlay nos. are inaccurate & misleading (in their small survey, play only once a year in a sport or activity, then AusPlay records you as a "participant"), it is probably useful as a guide of trends in the various sports.

"Sport Australia's 2019 participation survey showed the top 10 sports for adults and children.

AdultsChildren
1. Recreational walking1. Swimming
2. Gym2. Soccer
3. Athletics3. Gymnastics
4. Swimming4. Dancing
5. Cycling5. Basketball
6. Bushwalking6. Australian Rules football
7. Yoga7. Netball
8. Soccer8. Tennis
9. Golf9. Athletics
10. Tennis10. Cricket".

The decline of registered cricket nos., if it continues, will probably hurt also jnr GR AF in the long term around Australia, much more so than other sports.

This is because, at jnr club GR AF & jnr club cricket levels only, there is a close symbiosis between the 2 jnr levels of each sport, in Vic., WA, SA, Tas., & NT.
Not only do they share the same ovals & clubrooms (with both sports' team photos on the walls, Premier pennants hanging from the ceilings etc.; &, on the cusp of seasons, cricketers train in the nets etc., whilst their co-tenant AF players do their preseason training at & around the oval).

Also, there is often joint fund raising BBQ's/fun games etc.; &/or fund raising efforts involve promotion/invitations of these events with both AF & cricket co- tenants
Joint jnr player recruitment campaigns (official, or word-of-mouth) are also very common.

Possibly the biggest connection, however, is that it is common to have the same parents on both the co-tenant jnr AF & cricket clubs' committees; ditto often the same jnr coaches. Enormous & mutually beneficial for both jnr GR AF & cricket.

This symbiosis is certainly not as strong now in NSW (excluding sthn NSW), Qld., & the ACT- but, in normal circumstances, it can be expected to grow much stronger in future decades (due to shared ovals). This is very important there, since AF does not have the same cultural relevance, cf Vic., WA, SA, Tas. & NT- thus this direct & crucial exposure to AF, for many jnr cricketers in NSW, ACT, & Qld., might be their one & only major direct "entry point" to GR AF.

If cricket continues to decline, this symbiosis is weakened- & AF will be most affected, restricting jnr GR AF growth in NSW, ACT, & Qld.

Ditto my above comments to you.

No. There will simply be more options. Girls already have the option of soccer. Why aren't NRL types mentioning soccer ?
NRL & RA regard, correctly, AF as their direct competitor- as all 3 sports are contact sports, requiring much courage to play. These criteria do not apply to soccer (although soccer, basketball, netball, tennis, cricket, the gym, walking, running, internet gaming etc. would be regarded as indirect competitors for AF).

IMO those days are way gone. In fact I can name instances where cricket has been a competitor to junior Australian Football.
There is still significant crossover of players and staff but the only real benefit is in the commonality of facilities.
Thus the only possible effect is in the construction of new facilities.
Luckily for Australian Football the huge demand from women's Australian Football is large enough to drive that construction.

I have provided detailed reasons many times before in my posts.

You have never given reasons why rl grassroots should increase in rl heartland.
Logic states that people should already be aware of rl and playing rl in rl heartland.

Perhaps you can also explain what you know, that P. V'landys, A. Abdo, T. Greenberg, P. Beattie, J. Grant, & many MSM RL experts do not know, re reasons & solutions for the severe decline in GR male contact RL nos.; & threat that AF poses to RL.

Well that's easy - NRL have an inferior game.
Logic states that some games are going to be more attractive than others to the greater community.

Ditto my above comments to you.

I have explained to you many times why IMO there is no such thing as (short-term large-scale ) competition between sports.
Simply stated - fans and players are rusted on and in takes generations to change that,
but a new sport can find fans and players that previously weren't committed to other sports.

NRL & RA regard, correctly, AF as their direct competitor

Because they have capitulated to soccer. Soccer has beaten NRL and RA decisively in NSW !!

all 3 sports are contact sports, requiring much courage to play. These criteria do not apply to soccer (although soccer, basketball, netball, tennis, cricket, the gym, walking, running, internet gaming etc. would be regarded as indirect competitors for AF).

What a load of baloney. At junior level.
Australian Football is challenging w.r.t. the skills required not "courage".
Rugby wasn't rough for the backs (back then you'd simply pass the ball when challenged)
League, yes, is the only sport where there is consistent tackling - it's alone in this regard.
I hated being kicked in the shins in soccer and elbowed in the neck in basketball.
Cricket with it's concrete pitches and standard ball is easily the scariest sport around for juniors.

soccer, basketball, netball, tennis, cricket, the gym, walking, running, internet gaming etc. would be regarded as indirect competitors for AF

walking, running, swimming, tennis, gym would be seen as beneficial to football playing.
soccer, netball, basketball etc would be seen as good crossover
cricket, baseball, basketball would be seen as complementary

The Ausplay figures are weird to say the least. Bushwalking a sport - Give me a break. It is a relaxation type activity. So it now appears that if you walk in the bush you are exercising your leg muscles primarily and this a sport. Maybe it is a ploy by Ausplay to get more funding.
Somebody maybe better redefine the word SPORT.

1. GR female AF is booming around Australia, inc. NSW, ACT, &, especially, Qld. - & will probably continue to do so in the short to medium term. N. Livingstone says there are about 600,000 female "participants" now (a fluff no.-the crucial club & school comp. female play nos. a much lower figure).

Injuries, though, are a major concern in female AF- & if the high incidence continues, GR female AF growth, in the long term, may decline- & would be a big setback for AF in NSW, ACT, & Qld.

www.theage.com.au

Tackling steep rise in women’s contact sport injuries
Three sisters, three serious knee injuries. Data shows a steep rise in the number of women landing in hospital with sporting injuries as collision sports become more popular, prompting athletes and medical experts to demand “equal opportunity” to reduce the risks.
www.theage.com.au
www.theage.com.au

The high rate of serious knee injuries, however, in female AF (up to 9 times the rate for male GR AF players) is a considerable health risk for females; & a long term threat to female AF's growth. Ditto the much higher rate of female concussions (at least double).

These injury rates must be significantly reduced, which will require much more research, & better training techniques etc..
And also probably rule changes, only applicable to female AF, as females have inherent & immutable anatomical & hormonal factors, which greatly increase their likelihood of injury.
Female AF must become more free-flowing, & it is necessary to reduce the huge rates of tackling/bumping/pushing/collisions, & consequent injuries.

My understanding is that netball, because of its stop/start nature, has a higher raw no. of serious knee injuries in Aust. Pro rata per minute actually played, the figure is even worse for netball (netball games are shorter than AF). Concussion injury rates, however, are much lower.

I'm not sure about female basketball & soccer injury rates, but I assume they are much less than AF.

This article below, on female AF injury problems is also depressing, & quite gruesome. These concerns will NOT dissipate, & will increase- unless significant improvements occur.

"The problem has only gotten worse — the AFLW Injury report found there 5.1 ACL injuries per 1,000 hours in 2019 — that increased to 7.5 in 2020. It has been labelled a knee injury crisis within the AFLW and I think the numbers support the claim," researcher Tess Rolley said.

"A third of the injuries came when a player was wrong-footed when defending. Players losing their balance while tackling or being tackled was responsible for just under a third of all cases.

There is a clear contrast with the men's game.

"The key difference that we found was landing isn't a predominant injury characteristic in the AFLW," Ms Rolley said.

"In AFLW, they are playing a more ground style of play, more congested football, there's more contested possessions, there's less contesting marking situations. (Massive congestion is a major problem, & major contributory factor, in injury rates- my words, & emphases)"

When Ash Brazill ruptured her ACL it ended her 2020 football and netball seasons, but new research may be able to reduce the risk of injury.

Females should, if they wish to play AF, not be consigned to female" tackle bags". Female AF requires adjustments, for females physical & psychological health.

2. GR female contact RL is having significant growth in NSW & Qld., of a small base.

The decision to pay the Qld. RL female SOO teams the same match fees as the men's SOO is symbolic; & this achievement will be good PR for the NRLW, & will also benefit female contact RL nos.

I assume NSW will also adopt this policy.

In contrast, the NRLW's image has probably suffered by the NRL decision to delay playing the 2021 season, until early 2022.

Total NRLW player ages are dwarfed by the vastly higher AFLW player wages.

I'm not sure about female basketball & soccer injury rates, but I assume they are much less than AF.
You assume wrong.

Massive congestion is a major problem, & major contributory factor, in injury rates- my words
Your bullshit.

There is no evidence nor logic that suggests less tackling would reduce the number of serious knee injuries. After being called out on this lie in a different thread, you slunk away and now you're attempting to perpetuate it here. Give up.

Injuries, though, are a major concern in female AF

Are these your words or some official's ?
Yet another post where you are all over the place mixing your comment and quoted comment.
You seem to mixing junior football and youth football with AFLW and then other sports.
It's very confusing. Again, I suggest you post in smaller concise posts so as to make your point clear.

And also probably rule changes, only applicable to female AF, as females have inherent & immutable anatomical & hormonal factors, which greatly increase their likelihood of injury.

One of the most bizarre b.s. statements I've ever seen.

My understanding is that netball, because of its stop/start nature, has a higher raw no. of serious knee injuries in Aust.

Again are you talking about junior amateur of professional level ?
Soccer has the most injuries across the board.
Basketball injuries tend to take off the older a person gets.

"In AFLW, they are playing a more ground style of play, more congested football, there's more contested possessions, there's less contesting marking situations. (Massive congestion is a major problem, & major contributory factor, in injury rates- my words, & emphases)"

Yes, junior, amateur and professional women's football is more congested and yes, it needs to be more free-flowing.
one reason is that women haven't been playing the game long enough to perfect that style of play.
Yes, maybe the women's game should look at their game and make tweaks - but that's a subject in itself.
But congestion doesn't necessarily increase injuries - congestion SLOWS PLAY, lessening impacts.
You only have to watch that video of VFL big hits to realise that these guys were out in the open travelling at speed.
SPEED causes injuries - all sorts of injuries..

The NRL just signed a 16 year old - special dispensation and all that of course. This is one of our big challenge in Northern states when it comes to young fellas, the NRL's ability to sign under age players and offer them huge contracts.

All the young gun talk last season was about Joseph Suaalii who got an exemption to play NRL before his 18th birthday, his Roosters teammate Sam Walker and Bronco-turn-Warrior Reece Walsh.

But Manly have entered the conversation with a 16-year-old that’s destined for big things.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, five-eighth Latu Fainu has inked a four-year deal with the Sea Eagles. While the exact price of that deal has not been revealed, he will earn a seven-figure amount over the four years if he meets the performance targets included in the contract.

How many 16 year olds are both potential NRL and AFL recruits? You'd be lucky to count them on more than one hand. And of that, how many of them are good enough to get signed at 16? I'd be surprised if there was 1 every 10 years. I just looked up this kid and he's a big boy, looks nothing like most AFL draftees. Plenty of power but probably doesn't have anywhere near the endurance capability.

The crossover between rugby league and Australian football is extremely limited. Different games, different body types, different skills required. Very very few are capable of being elite at both.

Do you really think so ? Do you think that he might have played AFL - I think not.
