If the Liberals lose the WA State Election in March to Labor by a big margin, expect to see a leadership spill against Malcolm Turnbull happening within a month or two after the election. The question however is will the rebel group plotting the downfall of Turnbull have the numbers required to force a change of leader? And what effect would it have on the preparations for the upcoming Federal Budget?

Canberra has become an incestuous cesspool of ego, hubris and self-preservation on all sides of politics. In a way it always has been, but when you thrown in donors, lobbyists and the psychotic 24-hour news cycle, we end up with what we have today...

But who can...

Looking forward to more reasons why Abbott Turnbull Abbott is completely different from Rudd Gillard Rudd
Deposed Abbott is way less popular than deposed Rudd and the Labor split issues were mainly personal not ideological with the Liberals they're both and at high levels. So yeah they're completely different but not in a way that helps the Liberals.

The funniest thing though except for being a complete lame duck as PM Turnbull really isn't the issue the reason they're in the shitter.

its how one was represented as 'bad for Australia" and the other a 'good thing' nothing like hypocrisy to get a rise

I can't imagine any candidate that would have a better chance than Mal and, given Mal is a dead man walking, that says a lot about the current Liberals. It will be interesting to see the next polls after the Centrelink/travel rorts debacle.

In retrospect, the 2016 election win by the Coalition has come back to haunt them big time. An election loss would've been ideal for the Coalition to clean out the dead wood and start rebuilding from the ground up. A stint or two on the Opposition benches would've done them no harm at all.

The unexpected zeal of the Murdoch campaign against Ley is part of a two step - one get him back on the front bench as Health Minister and then into the leadership again

I can only assume the rationale behind an Abbott return would be to gut as much as they can, and make it as difficult as possible for the ALP to undo the damage. Because they are headed for a landslide loss at the next election if he takes them into it.
With an annual deficit around $50b, it is obvious that something needs to be gutted.

Abbott is a spent force.
Has not eaten on onion or been filmed in a hard hat or budgie smugglers for months.
Last seen at Flight Centre trying to book flights home to Old Blighty under and assumed name.
Thinks he can role the Queen and become King, then he can dole out as many Knighthoods as he likes.

Could the Liberals look at asking Julie Bishop to be a candidate for the leadership of the party (and also being PM) if there was a leadership spill, seeing the Liberals doesn't want to go back to Abbott or Turnbull, in an attempt to 'save the furniture?'

I used to volunteer a lot for the alp, and you used to hear a lot of gossip about the behind the scenes stuff at both parties

A couple of guys in the libs told me bishop wasnt very popular amongst the dudes in the liberal party, BUT she was adored in wa, and was the major source of donors for the libs as she had the wa corps in her pocket

Part of the reason she was made deputy was recognition of this power (apparently)

If true, and assuming unchanged, id be surprised if she has enough support to take the top job (also i think shes smart enough to not want it)

Note on how much things have changed. I remember it was an open secret that one of the vic libs most senior ministers was a lush (often found wiped out late night in his offices by staffers). Alp didnt do s**t though because (1) they had similar, and (2) he was actually a good minister. Apparently this was pretty common back then, with both sides only pulling the trigger when a line was crossed or the job effected. How things have changed!!!

Abbott had his chance and he outright lied in order to get things done. Now even though Turnbull is useless, a failure and needs to go, I don't think we should be in a rush to declare Abbott his replacement. But I do think it is very clear that the Liberals need a new leader before the next election, because at present I think Shorten would be a resounding victor if the election was held today.

The Liberal party is clearly split into two. We might call them Liberal & Conservative, or the Rabbots & the not Rabbots. Or we may not :)

Whatever we call them, they most definitely are a divided camp. Fighting over a dead body like the LP is a waste of time. The may as well recognise the fact & go their separate ways.

Bishop's appeal is that she lives in the mega-wealth suburbs of WA, just like Colin Barnett...other than that, there's not much worthy of donation.

if it's going to happen it'll come from ScoMo or Dutton, looking at the leadership contenders from the LNP is like watching a porno, all duds...and neither of them could win an election, nor Abbott for that matter, if they did go back to him.

Which is crap of course

Mining Tax
Carbon Tax

They have yet to plumb the depths of stupidity that brought about those two.

The LNP have cut and gutted so much already you need to ask yourself wtf are they spending money on?

Cut and gutted what? How many public servants have been sacked?
