Haven't played a tennis game since Virtual Tennis 2 on the PS2. Are the modern ones good?
Yes and no, the two main (Tiebreak Tennis by Big Ant and Top Spin) that I rotate with have good and bad points.
Big Ants effort is much better than their AO Tennis games but again like other games they are involved with.... there's a bit of jankiness with controls (which imo they put behind as user input control rather than engine/mechanics.. eg: go to hit a ball at waist height.... nothing happens, except ball hitting the players legs).
Top Spins shot system is confusing at first but once it clicks... it plays well imo. Funnily enough I was useless at it but got better AFTER having played Tiebreak Tennis. People mocked the Top Spin graphics - rightfully so as it looks average on console, but it's a far better looking game (non blurry etc) on pc... but yes many players don't resemble their real selves.
