I know this is going to make me unpopular, but what the hell does Steve Waugh think he's playing at? That was an inspirational innings, and I don't think it can be disputed in and of itself, what what point exactly is he trying to make here?
He's rushed himself back into the Australian team when he was clearly unprepared physically; the fact that he aggravated his calf injury early on is ample testament to that. The risk he ran of causing some sort of permanent damage makes it foolhardy enough. But, lest we forget, this is a dead rubber. Heroics aren't actually needed here. We could have compiled a massive score without him.
Personally, it was a foolish risk to bat when he hadn't made a full recovery (something he categorically stated he wouldn't do). Teamwise, it runs the risk of looking like a vote of no-confidence in Gilchrist as captain.
I would have understood it if the series stood at 2-2, even 2-1. But 3-1? What was it all about?
I see where you are coming from RogerC, but i dont agree with you.
The way the australians play now is that every match is as important as each other, whether it be the 5th test, when your leading 3-1, or whether it is level at 2-2. They are of equal importance to this team.
