Just thought i'd start a thread so that we could discuss our weekly comics/manga purchases. I got only two comics, both from D C. "Birds of Prey" (fast closing on the hundredth issue) and the "Vertigo" western "Loveless". The latter title is very "dark" in tone, not at all like the western comics that I remember as a kid !

Man, my pull list is usually on the medium-biggish side.

Last week;

52 WEEK #24
AUTHORITY #1
CIVIL WAR: X-MEN #4
FLASH: THE FASTEST MAN ALIVE #5
WILDCATS #1
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS #2

This week;
52 WEEK #25
ACTION COMICS #844
CAPTAIN AMERICA #23
DEATHBLOW #1
JUSTICE #8
NEW AVENGERS #24
SECRET SIX #5
SUPERMAN/BATMAN ANNUAL #1
TRIALS OF SHAZAM #3
UNCLE SAM AND THE FREEDOM FIGHTER #4
WETWORKS #2

Have you checked out Gray & Palmiotti's "Jonah Hex"? That aint like the Western comics I remember either.

I won't be heading into my LCS this week, but the books I'll be picking up from this week's lot will be:

Ultimate Spider-man #101: Clone Saga is a dirty word in Spidey history but this title has redeemed the whole concept and is one of the best Spidey stories to come out in sometime.

Daredevil #90: Bendis' and Maleev's run on DD was one of the all time classics, but Brubaker's and Lark's continuation is even better. The best comic on the stands today.

Captain America #23: Never been a big Cap fan, mostly cos he looked like the pin up boy for American imperialism, but Brubaker has converted me. top stuff...

Action Comics #844: I'm interested to see what Richard Donner can do.

I'm falling way behind on comics....

the only ones I really care about atm are Ghost rider, Magician (except I cant find the damn thing cause it's sold out) and Fallen Angel - best comic I've read.

Oh yeah ! I get that one as well. I've long been a fan of "Jonah Hex"; dark, grim, violent and often delving into themes of horror.:thumbsu:

My list is mostly mainstream stuff:

The various Superman titles.
The various Batman titles.
2000AD.
The Phantom
The Punisher
52
The Goon

This ends up at about $100 a week when you throw in a few back-issues I missed in a five year hiatus from comics plus specials, mini-series and one-offs like Conan Book of Thoth and Justice. I have been hitting ebay pretty hard for Batman back issues. You can score some serious stuff for only a couple of $ an issue where my comic shop charges back-issues at a minimum of $5-$6 a pop plus a premium for highlight issues.

I need to check out Jonah Hex as well.

Here's my list for this week's buying (1/11/06).

52 WEEK #26
DETECTIVE COMICS #825
HULK #100
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #3
MIDNIGHTER #1
MYSTERY IN SPACE #3
NIGHTWING #126
UNCANNY X-MEN #480

I really enjoy Bru's work also. Gritty stuff, esp DD. Loving his 12 issue arc on Uncanny-keeps me hanging for more (sure hope they don't kill off Vulcan). I thought his run on the Authority was cool too.

Don't know if you got to read AC #844. I enjoyed it. Some thought it was a tad slow. Don't know how much of it is Donner's work. I imagine that he pitches to Johns, and then GJ works the rest of it. Kubert's art was sensational. It'll build to something fantastic.

I plan on getting down to my lcs once I hand in my last assignment for the year lol. Definitely looking forward to AC and yeah, I've heard it's slow but these things are written mostly with the trade in mind these days, plus Donner is still getting his legs in the medium.

I've been torrenting Uncanny (waiting for the trade as i have too much on my list as it is!) and it's been pretty darn good, though Joss Whedon's Astonishing is the premier X-men title these days, along with Peter David's X-factor which is the most underrated title going around.

Have you read the first issue of Brubaker's new series Criminal?? It's bloody terrific and looks like a classic in the making.

No. But cheers for the heads-up on that. Who's doing the pencils (can't be fagged checking Newsarama)?:D

Finally decided to check out this Civil War thing so I ordered CW 1&2 and picked up 3, 4 and 5 off the shelf. 1 & 2 came in this week so hopefully it was worth the wait.

This week I got "Justice League of America" 8, "The Brave and The Bold" 3 ("Batman & Blue Beetle") and the four issues of the "52" spinoff "World War III",

Latest comics are "Jonah Hex" 19,"Shazam :The Monster Society of Evil"3,and the Dark Horse collection of "Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser". While i'm not always a fan of Mike Mignola's art "Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser" is good. I suppose that it is hard to wreck such good original stories no mater WHAT you do!
