List Mgmt. What do we do in the off season re. our list?

I think with Cian Hanley, he is an international rookie. So he is over and above the regular list and he doesn't take up a list spot. They can afford to keep him on, to atleast see what he has got. He might be quite exciting if he could get on the park.

Couldn't agree more,an absolutely stupid decision..says volumes about the bums in the football dept.

I will be shocked if he gets an AFL game with any other club so we better be cursing those bums in every other football department too.

Regards list. they say it takes time to develope big men, however hipwood and schache have ,from what I have seen, proven this theory to be wrong so far. That brings me to Ben Keays. He is not a tall and I therefore want to throw a question out there, to all the lions fans. Is Ben Keays over rated? I have been extremely underwhelmed by his performances. Is he good enough to be on the list? from what I have seen no.Mathieson, a latter pick has shown far more potential. If the right offer came along I would trade Ben.

Nup.

Way too harsh.

First year player, local product, another kid amongst a bunch of kids who need at least another year of development before any sort of meaningful assessments can be made.

Putting him on the trade table would send a terrible message.

Ok you've got my attention.

Firstly, big men do take more time to develop, this isn't a theory someone's come up with overnight, it's a well established rule that holds true in almost every case in the history of the AFL, you can't say you've "proven this theory to be wrong" with two examples out of hundreds, even if Schache and Hipwood had kicked 100 goals each this year. The fact is KPPs don't reach their full potential until well into their twenties, sometimes not even until 26/27, and with 80-100 games under their belt. Now Hipwood and Schache have been relatively impressive first year KPFs, and it's good that they've been impressive because it suggests they could be great players in the future. But right now they're only showing signs, they're not even close to the level they'll be in the future. On the other hand, smaller players drafted at picks like 2 and 14 can often burst onto the scene straight away, becoming integral parts of their team and are often playing at close to their maximum output level by the time they are 22.

So what of Keays? Why isn't he bursting onto the scene and getting 30 touches a game? Mathieson's a much lower draft pick and is having more of an impact. Is Keays overrated? Maybe. If the right offer came along you would trade Ben? I would argue that if he truly is not good enough to be on the list, the worst list in the AFL, then it seems unlikely any offer would come along. Maybe we should just cut his contract short and delist him. He could go back to CityBeach. I dunno. I just thought maybe a 19 year old slightly framed kid cracking in hard, playing out of position, with a hugely successful junior and Neafl body of work behind him, that justified him getting bid on at pick 24, who is showing fantastic glimpses of inside skills and instinctual decision making beyond the level of a lot of our list, and after the whole GH5 thing, given he's a Brisbane local and bleeds for the club and is as desperate to win as any player out there, maybe it would be worth giving him another season or two. But that's just me, maybe I'm biased here.

Early on especially he generated a lot of shots on goal. That's a definite good sign. Didn't convert as many as we'd perhaps like but game day nerves and exhaustion had their effects, something we saw with Hipwood and Schache from to time as well. He's got some work to do but he's certainly got potential.

If we're trading out every 19-year-old who's yet to complete the jump from NEAFL to AFL it's going to be a very long rebuild.

Okay so WTF is going on with McGrath?

Some on here posted that he was certain to leave, some citing 'health reasons'. But he obviously wasn't in the delistings/retirements... I get that we can still make more list decisions but, based on the information available here, you would've thought it would've been one of the early moves.

Are you mad??!! We have constant go home issues and yet you want to trade a QLD kid after 1 year in a poor team when in a perfect world he would have been in the 2's for the majority of the season to learn the ropes!!

That's a big no from me!

Looking to move home for health reasons.

Well we are either trading him, the rumours are BS or there's a chance he'll stay. Nothing to get worked up about.

Mmm hardly worked up - it's just curious at this stage. (At least for those of us who don't have intel on the situation)

And we're going to facilitate a trade? Wouldn't have thought he would attract a whole lot of attention at the trade table

I don't know all I know is he's sick and wants to head home. The fact he didn't go to mad Monday makes me think that yes the club will facilitate a trade.

while I wouldn't be trading or delisting him I believe he is overrated and can't believe he played 16 games straight to close out the year (even with our poor list).

he played as a forward majority of those 16 games and kicked 4.8 (less than 1 shot on goal per game). he had 11 disposals a game (Schache and Hipwood as key forwards averaged 9/9.5 per game). probably his best stat is nearly 4 tackles a game which is pretty reasonable.

I watched him quite closely against St Kilda in the last round and thought he was probably in our worst 2-3 players on the day (with Hammer and Hanley). He generally baulked when the option was there to put the body on the line in a marking contest giving away a few too many easy intercept marks in the process. He also doesn't spread much to get cheap marks and create that link between defence and forward you'd expect of flanker/wingers

Those critiques are not an indictment on Keays, more a reflection that he shouldn't be playing AFL footy at this point and instead have spent the entire season in the NEAFL learning the senior game, and if he was coming in it should have been to a team with 2 or 3 players under 21 not half the team!

Mohr would be a good pickup from GWS, as would Rhys Palmer and Sam Reid. I'd be waving a bag of cash under Jack Steele's nose, too.
Yep if the club is looking to add an experienced/bigger bodied player to our list Rhys Palmer would be one of the first I'd hope they'd approach as he is a fairly good player and yet wouldn't cost a hell of a lot and is potentially gettable considering he deserves to be in the Giants senior side and yet they have so much talent that he just isn't getting a look in right now.

Having gone through the GWS early days, he also knows what he is getting in for.
