Overall very encouraging signs but we still need some more quality to really take the next step.

Tucker, Young, Pearce, Hamling???, Logue, Sturt, Walters and Taberner to come back into this side so that would likely give us a bit more talent.... just a little.

But what exactly do you think we need to become a good or great team

Imo quality small forwards are clearly the weakest part of our team and list

An X-Factor player forward of centre is vital as well as good forward structures

Anyway what do you guys reckon??

A new forward line coach, a good strength and conditioning coordinator, an outside mid/winger with elite speed, kicking inside 50, endurance and can take an overhead mark.

Need to also cut the deadweight in the list; North, Colyer, Matera, Dixon, Bewley, Blakely.

Switta will feel like a new signing if he can get his back right.

The wings need to be improved on, so too the forward/ruckman role and we desperately need another classy small forward or two.

That’s it really. We’ve made great decisions with our coaches and particularly getting rid of Weber so a final tweak or two off the field and we’ll be good. It’s been a very good year with plenty of progress.

We just need to get our best 22 on the park on a reasonable basis. Missing Walters and Tabs today made things very hard. Difficult to understand why they did not bring in Dixon for Tabs instead of Colyer.

The more the the guys work together the better they will get

Agree with this. I think we have what we need. Just need to get them on the park consistently.

A bit of luck. The squad as it is now is actually good enough.

Obviously the list needs refinement, but we have enough talent already to make finals. Getting higher than just making it needs improvement in our young guns, better ball movement through the arcs & greater cohesion between our tall forwards.

A very well compiled post.

I agree with the above bolded statements. I also believe that the team would benefit from a player of a heavier frame, that also possesses moderate ruck craft, acting as the second ruckman, in place of Rory Lobb. Said player would also be competent when acting in a part-time forward capacity.

Aside from the aforementioned players being added to the squad, our young midfielders now just simply require additional time, and to undergo the natural evolution that comes during the 50 - 100 games progression. Those players that they were pitted against tonight, were far more physically developed.

Wing, Forward pocket, Forward flanker could all be upgraded.

Sturt, Henry will fill two of these roles hopefully. I would like us to draft a small forward early, then western and walker can compete for outside mid role as well.

Another quality inside/outside mid. We saw what happens when Mundy has a quiet game tonight, we get overrun in the middle. Another up and coming mid like a Shai Bolton type would be ideal.

You look at the Dogs through the middle and they have class coming out their backside - Bont, Hunter, Macrae, Dunkley, Smith, Libba. That’s a deep running midfield, if one of them has a down game others can and usually will pick up the slack.

Cerra, Serong, Brayshaw is a good start but are all very young and we need to bat deeper. Tucker coming back will help. Fyfe will still run through there but probably not full time. I think we are one more A Grade quality mid away from competing at the top. Whether we can find that through draft or trade I’m not sure, I think we should be open to either.

I hope Belly has been in Zac William’s management ear all year. He’s exactly what we need and could come for salary. I’d be happy to pay $700k - $800k a year to get him across.

Sam Fisher would be nice as well but we’d have to mortgage our picks next year or give up something pretty decent to get him back to WA.

Valente will help too assuming he stays. Will be like a mature age recruit by the time he debuts.

Just need time imo - for JL to embed his systems. And to not have so many B22 players out (think we ended up 2nd worst for injuries this year). We were (arguably) missing 8 of our best 22 today - we've had no less than 6 missing all season really.

We're going to get improvement from the vast majority of the players on our list. Darcy, Brayshaw, Cerra, Serong, Young, Sturt, Henry, Tucker, Logue and Cox are all quality youngsters (under 24) that should all be presenting as best 22 by round 1. We will hopefully add three more via the draft as well. Schultz, Crowden and Freddy will benefit from clarity around roles as well over pre-season.

We didn't see the best of Lobb, Walters and Hogan this year. They were all overcoming various demons and back in Perth with access to specialists I think all of them could vastly improve individually next season. They are key pieces to a functional forward line and JL has already said the forward line and mid connection is something that needs plenty more work so they could be big beneficiaries of a better system forward of centre next season.

Get the forward line functioning well, an extra pre-season into our young midfield and get 4 of our defenders back on the park and we should be playing finals next season.

Today's game was an anti-climax but they had everything to play for and it really was a dead rubber for us. We won most statistical areas today - just made too many dumb mistakes and fumbled too much. The back line was under the pump too often. Also hard to stop them getting it to the outside when they can throw it around the place rugby style. Disappointing to lose by 30 in the end but reckon it'd be a great game for JL to dissect with them ahead of next season.

Backline looks elite already, assuming everyone can get on the park.
Hogan (if he stays fit) Fyfe Walters Tabenuer is a very good forward line.
I am most concerned about our midfield, feel like we have a lot of working class/b grade midfielders, not sure there is a lot of elite talent. Cerra Brayshaw Serong have shown glimpses of being outstanding players, but not sure they are premiership winning midfield yet.
2014 Fyfe, Mundy, Barlow, Hill and Pearce/Neale/Crowley and Sandilands would all be getting games in this years midfield.

How do we think we line up Rd 1 next year assuming no injuries and based on the current list?

FB: Ryan - Hamling - Logue
HB: Young - Pearce - Wilson
C: Acres - Brayshaw - Aish
HF: Sturt - Hogan - Cerra
FF: Lobb - Tabs - Walters
FOLL: Darcy - Fyfe - Serong
INT: Mundy - Conca - Tucker - Crowden

EMG: Hill - Cox - Duman

We’re building some decent depth when Watson, Meek, Valente, Freddie, Henry, Switta, Schulz, Bewley, Giro and Blakely can’t make the squad.

Colyer instead of Dixon is a signal that Dixon is gone, and possibly Valente as well.

It is very difficult for a team to carry Colyer, Frederick and Henry. Their current contributions are minimal. We need to progress to a stage where development isn’t happening in the main games as much as it has been during our rebuild. Hopefully a better run with injury will achieve this. We do have around 8 or so best 22 players to get into the side.

we are fortunate that a couple of NGA players can bring some of what we need in skill and pace, especially in the Covid Mystery Draft. Perhaps Western can work as a forward, and perhaps the forgotten Walker, Chris, can bring something to our forward zone. I like the options that seem to be rated around our first pick, and there are some athletic rucks for later.

I like the best 22 you have and the emergencies, but none of your decent depth have compelling arguments for inclusion which is a concern.

I like Watson a lot (probably more than Duman) Freddie brings great pressure, Switta and Schulz should be pressing for the small forward role. Meek is only 22 and literally our only backup ruckman.

I’ve voiced my concern on whether Pearce is going to be a success long term, 7 years for 50+ games? Let’s hope who ever takes over S&C gets him going. One more breakdown and you would seriously think about moving him on.
