If the trends in tactics continue they will have to do something.

Blightys flood line accross the centre is another option where only 11 players are allowed in your defensive half.

Might sound unneccessary now but the new floodig tactics resemble basketball where all players defend then run forward on masse when possession is gained.

Would be tried in the Ansett Cup first, perhaps in the next 2-3 years.

why bother?
teams can just man up, and that would prevent teams from aimless kicking at the end of a match.

players run down the clock in basketball too, but delivering a 2-3 metre chest/bounce pass is alot easier than a kick..

its a good idea in theory, much like Blights flood line rule is a good rule. But it is just too hard to judge on.
If it line-ball, then there is too much pressure on the umpire.
Also, with Blights flood line, the maggot mike sheahan also said, what if there are 11 players in their defensive half already and they kick the ball downfield, but it stops about 5 metres short of the floodline, what can the guy do. If he goes over he gives a free kick away?!?. Also it would take the umps to long to decide wether there are 11 or more in their defensive half.

jod 23,

If you introduced a shot clock like system in Basketball to the AFL it wouldn't be very good. A shot clock is better for ball sports with small grounds (or courts). Because AFL is such a free flowing game, it wouldn't be very effective.

fragma exactually! If teams stuck to their opponents I couldn't see them kicking backwards (towards the oppositions goals). No new rules please - it would just ruin the game.

If a change *did* have to be made to prevent chip kicking to run down the clock, and I don't think it should, then I advocate Dennis Commetti's suggestion. Apparently, he proposed that the length of a legal kick be extended to 25 metres rather than 10.

I think Commetti suggested it to combat flooding, but it would also preclude an unattractive short-kicking style and make it difficult for teams retain possession in order to run down the clock. While I don't think it should be implemented, the idea has merit.

bomber0018,

shut up about the kicking, the bombers were the biggest users of running the clock down and if they arein front by a point and only have to pass between themselves uncontested then why not? Why does everyone want to change the rules just because one team gets an advantage from using their heads once in a while, same goes for the flooding thing

Yeah RooBoy 96 has a very good point about team being punished for poor manning up.
I have never understood how come in the AFL, especially from kick-outs, a player will be standing about 10 metres from another player and just lets him take an uncotested mark. I have never understood it, it just seems stupid to me. Why don't they just stay on a man and follow him.
My son plays in the under 16's and they mark extremely tightly. From a kick-out, i haven't seen an uncontested mark that i can remember in my son's comp. I dont understand why players just dont man up instead standing about 10 metres from them, sometimes less, and just letting them take an uncontested mark.
