I reckon the draft is a good idea, and it is working. So many people i know are dissing the draft camp but i see it as a good thing as it adds to the fairness of the competition as this means all clubs see all draftees, basically, instead of each club testing the players they want and also the players only having to be tested once, not by every individual club that wants them. Some buckles are being ironed out so keep up the good work with the draft.

Draft is definitely a good thing

But i believe that the old zoning system needs to be brought back. For the simple reason that young kids stay in their home state

What do i base this on

Well from the dockers perspective and after going throug the jeff white incident. It seems that is is going to happen all over again
Pavlich and Brown, pavlich in particular is going to be a superstar of the future. And because of that, and that fact he is from SA means that it isn't looking good for the dockers in retaining him

The sad truth is that in 7 years when these 2 are in their peak, both of them will not be playing for the dockers. Its still 50 50 as to wether we have one of them

That is why when brisban offered hedland for brown in a straight swap i wish they took it.

Its a fact that young players get home sick, dockers and eagles are always going to cop it worse than most over clubs when the majority of the up and coming youth of today are vic's.

Sainters should take this into concideration when drafting.

But i admit brisband cop it the worse, and come 2002 hedland will not be in their colors. But if zoning was in place they would gain one of best youngsters (forgotten his name)

The draft is a good idea, basically because it denies clubs such as Carlton the opportunity of buying the best young footballers.

I would allow clubs to trade a player once they have drafted him. I would also make the allocation of picks a lottery, as occurs in the US.

The draft camp is a farce. It does not even up the competition and does not allow clubs to look at all draftees. The entire process is flawed.

Local zones are also flawed. If Brisbane and Sydney were serious about recruiting local talent, then they would do so. They just don't look carefully enough. How was it that Essendon were able to get Hird and Blumfield late in the draft, before the inception of the NSW/ACT side? Ditto Hammil and Carey. The Swans and the Lions have such an advantage in this area, but fail to take advantage of it.

Love the draft... however is implemented wrongly... there should be
NO COMPENSATION PICKS
NO ZONES

a fair draft now that would be good...

as for the father/son rule... clubs should not nominate them at the start of the draft... but if a team picks a player which your club is entitled to under father/son... then at that point your club should be eentitled to nominate that player as a father/son pick... using their next available pick... and the original club has theeir pick again... what do others feel???

The draft & the salary cap are there to help the less financialy viable clubs survive.

If it was open slather then a couple would go to the wall pretty quickly. Therefore if you don't want any clubs to fold you should be in favour of it.

I don't agree with the rule which forces clubs to pay at least 95% of their cap.

It would be nice if a bit more home state biase could be worked into the system.

It is something stupid like... in brisbane Stevie Lawrence's old man sat on the bench for three games in the QAFL... what a damn flaming joke...

There is a modified father-son rule for new clubs. As far as i know it is basically the same as the other except instead of having a father who played for your club it is a father that played in the local league and it is for the first 5 or so years that you are around, then you go to the rule that involves established clubs.

That does not sound right as WCE had been around a lot longer then 5 years when Ben Cousins chose WCE...

Is it if your father played more then 50 games in the WAFL... depending on what team... you are either eligible for WCE or Freo...

I don't know if that is correct.

Adelaide couldn't pick up Chad Cornes under father/son even though his old man played over 300 games in the sanfl & coached them for 4 years.

I seem to recall that Adelaide could have got him if Cornes had coached them 1 more year.

I was under the impression that Des Headland was keen on returning to Perth for the 2001 season - so I think your not too wrong in saying he'll be returning back west soon sabre_ac

Drakey - I'm not too sure if the father/son rule disadvantages newer clubs, I'm fairly sure Freo got Clem Michael under the father/son rule because his father played for South Freo.

Shinboners - Bryan Cousins played for Perth (might of won a Sandover Medal too) before moving to play for Geelong in the VFL

The only disadvantage of the draft is that young football players often have to move interstate. Then when they come home it creates a lot of trouble for the clubs they belong to. There should be more rules to keep local talent in their home state, having 10 victorian teams is unfair as they poach talent from interstate.

The draft is good but I agree with Rooboy. There should be no compensation picks. If you finish last, 1st pick is enough. Why should you be rewarded even more ???

Exactly right Rooboy!

There is something fundamentally wrong with a system that allows a 45 year old former champion player of a Victorian club (St Kilda in this instance) to sit on the bench for ONE game in the QAFL and in doing so allow his son to be drafted by the Lions under the father/son rule.

Oh well, he is home now! (Although I noticed the lions forum take offence at saints fans saying he is "home")

Drakey, I have no idea how the system works for non-Victorian teams. Perhaps there are a different rules for Sydney and Brisbane compared to the SA and WA teams

I think the draft has been good for the AFL, you just have to look at the eveness of the competition since it began. Before the draft we had teams like Carlton and Hawthorn raiding the inter state leagues (WAFL, SANFL) with massive pay cheques so as to buy premierships. CArlton got Bradley, Kernahan and others I can't remember while Hawthorn got Buckanara, Platten, Dunstall etc. Nowadays teams can't do this and they are forced into developing young players. I also disagree with an earlier post about freo keeping Pavlich and Brown. Pavlich has already said that wants to be a one club player with freo and i think that with brown, pavlich, haselby and longmuir together they won't want to leave a successful combination. Zoning would be something to look into though as it would force clubs to develop their local talent which would in turn strenghten the WAFL, SANFL, QAFL and NSWFL

Freo for the flag

Thats just my opion about loosing at least one of the super 3

But look at it this way, like u said longmuir, pavlich, hasleby, brown.

They are all going to be on huge contracts.Teams like adelaide are going to be able to throw allot money at pavlich and probally more than the dockers can afford.Considering they already rake in more revenue. So why would pavlich stay

It is a frightening prospect but a likely one
That is why i hope that the dockers go hammer and tongs for hedland next year because it is going to happen to the dockers later down the track

Again the dockers were lucky this year to hang on to waterhouse

Sabre-ac

You are wrong there, especially about Pavlich. he actually signed an extended deal when he signed and I would be very surprised to see him go back to SA.

The reason is simple, ask any Crows or Power supporter. They passed on him and didn't want him instead of going for the likes of McGregor and god knows who Power went for.

Pavlich is very happy at Freo and can see them going further than either SA team in the near future.

Freo Rules

I am one of the dockers biggest fans and have never missed a home game.

But believe me in 6 years we will have lost either pavlich and or brown

Looking over him when he was a 17 year old is no big deal.We have de listed bell and he came back.Money talks along with family

U will see in 6 years
