I took an american mate to his first footy game on the weekend - Essendon v Hawks.

I explained to him a few of the rules, he'd seen a few games on tv, and he did some reading up on the net - i think he has a pretty good understanding of our great game.

As the game progressed he became increasingly confused - why were all the hawthorn supporters chanting "BAAALLLLL" every five seconds. I explained to him it was short for “Holding the Ball”.

He was still confused - to him, their shouting seemed to have no logical link with what was happening on the field.

The shout is probably the best feeling in a game as a yelling spectator. As mentioned by Hulkster above, it is a great chant at that, if it goes the whole way :p

Spot on!

There is no better feeling than winning in the west!:D

well when you get that feeling of winning against WCE in the West let me know ;)

but i will admit i have to laugh when i'm at the footy, every time a WCE player lays a tackle there are shouts of BAAAAAALLLLLLLL. Doesn't matter if the guy has just recieved the ball or didn't have it in the first place they will still shout it. Pretty funny although by the end of the match it can get tiresome.

:D That's a coincidence. I always felt the same way about Essendon fans: too busy screaming and making noise to notice what was actually happening. I don't suppose you have that problem these days. There is not too much to get excited about. You could jump out of your seat every time one of the new Baby Bombers or your new captain boots one out on the full from 5 metres out, directly in front of goals, but you'd probably look like a bit of a goose.

Mostly you just have to sit there in silence and suffer. But cheer up! At least this way you get to actually watch games of football and realise it's not all about Essendon - there are other teams and champions other than James Hird. Enjoy the "theatre-going".

I went to the same game and the american is correct....there was no logical link why the Hawk supporters were yelling "ball" to what was was happening on the field. They felt hard done by with a holding the ball decision so their natural reaction was to yell ball at every opportunity an essendon bloke got within 5 metres of the ball....so...BAAAALLLLLL

Did your American friend understand why all the Hawthorn supporters were cheering at the end of the game?

Thomas thought the crowd kept calling for their favourite player and subsequently made him captain.

Or perhaps the others were typical whingeing Hawthorn supporters.

seems to me that the only people whingeing are Essendon supporters and you. Maybe you need to go get your government sponspored 'positive vibe' again. I usually like Kangaroos supporters. Back to work hey Ashley.

There is no logic involved. 9 out of 10 times the crowd screams ball or anything else the crowd is wrong. They use their voice to intimidate and confuse the pea-brained umpires who have no freaking idea what is going on and capitulate to the loudest supporters.
