What does the margin need to be for a game to be considered a thrashing?

Depends on the weather too. 5 goals on a wet day could be seen as a thrashing.

North v Essendon was 42 points, so I'd say 41 points plus.

But then I've seen Essendon hand out a few absolute hidings and then Sheeds coaching moves in the second half bring it back closer, e.g. Ess v Carl early 2000.

My benchmark for a thrashing is the lesser of:
a) Margin of 60 points
b) Double the opposition score

a thriller within 10 points
a close win 10-24
a comfortable win 25- 48
a good beating 49- 60
a thrashing 60- 80
a belting 80- 90
a demoliting 91- 120
an embarrasment to watch over 120 :(

I think it all depends on how the team performs, i mean a team can win by 5 goals and absolutly dominate play with poor kicking on goal where the other team doesnt for example 10 23 83 to 8 5 53 and when you look at it it could of been say 18 15 etc etc.

Does this make sense?

Bookies odds - over 39.5 points, so 7 goals.
Exactly right. As someone who bets on over 39's a bit, whenever a team gets on top, more often than not the margin will be 7-8 goals. There have been plenty of wins this year by between 40-50 points, but anything more than 50 is an absolute caning. The bookies obviously did a fair bit of research into this which is why they chose 39.5
