The club has declined significantly in the last few years but he did build the club up significantly in his tenure.

Now Sheedy is to depart he really does seem to be leaving a pretty massive hole.

Will be interesting to see how Sheedy goes at Melbourne if he can land the job.

Essendon really dont seem to be making any positive moves to reinvigorate their club nor handling the whole situation or transition post Sheedy well.

You used significantly twice in one sentence. Please show more imagination in future contributions.

{violin starts playing softly}:p

I reckon we'll go pretty well. We have a lot of young players on the verge who Sheedy has maybe held back a bit. My only gripe about Sheeds is that he hangs on to fringe players too long, so I reckon the next coach will want a clean slate, and this will be a good opportunity for the young guys to step up and maybe become stars of the game.

Whilst I tend to agree with you about your point that Essendon seems to have stagnated a bit in recent years, you'd have to say that was the premise for sacking Sheedy.

In regards to them treading water in these last few weeks, I'd say it's the combination of waiting to make a bunch of sweeping changes with the appointment of a new coach, and all that brings with it, and also being hamstrung by sending off a much loved coach and ex-captain...so in essence, they are bound to honour the past more than the future...at least in the immediate future (until after round 22).

Once a new coach is announced, you'll probably see a swag of delistings, players given more responsibility, and other wholesale changes.

;)Seriously now.....it was a move Essendon had to make as Kevin's drift from mystic fortuneteller into demented senility was starting to accelerate and their board have obvious decided that they need a little bit more control of their list (drafting etc...) and that was never going to happen with Sheedy at the helm.

Before you start lampooning me for accusing Sheedy of losing the plot, I got my information from a good source from inside the club who told me that even though he will most likely lose his job when Sheedy goes it was necessary as the playing and the coaching group had lost confidence in his ability to create an environment condusive to winning........my source was heaps sh!tfaced though.

So the club has declined "significantly" under Sheedy in recent years yet his loss will leave a "massive" hole according you understudy.

its gonna be hard for them i rekcon. yes theyll have the core players but none of them have played under a different regime at essendon.

i think for a while if might be a rudderless ship

The board has arguably been a major contributor to their decline.

The same board and admin remains in place regardless of who they end up appointing as senior coach.

Thier aint to many more competent senior coaches around than Sheedy, he certainly appears to be the scapegoat for Essendons current woes.

Surprised at how defencive same peoples responses are here, my comments were pretty much motivated by how impressed Gary Lyon seemed to be by Sheedy's presentation to Melbourne.

Theres no doubt Sheedy knows his stuff and would be a very valuable acquisition for any club.

I dont think anything Ive written here could be considered to controversial or glaringly inaccurate.

It'll be interesting to see where he goes, do you think he's a chance to coach unlisted understudy. What kind of keyboard warrior doesn't even put up the club they support.

is there anyone on BF who HASN'T started a thread about where essendon is going to be post sheedy over the next couple of years? do we really need to tread over this old ground again?

just to recap what has been discussed in the 724 other identical threads

  • essendon will struggle next year and possibly for a few years as the core of the team gets old and retires (hird, fletcher, lloyd, lucas)
  • macpie hates essendon but enjoys baiting essendon supporters
  • essendon's list management has been poor 2001 - 2006 which has resulted in a lack of 24 - 28 year olds at the club
  • most essendon supporters think that ryder is the second coming
  • most opposition supporters and a few essendon supporters (myself included) think ryder shows potential but is yet to prove himself
  • jobe watson can't kick
  • macpie hates essendon
  • the board have handled the sticky sheedy situation rather well, although they have still copped a lot of critiscm
  • it was time for sheedy to go
  • matthew lloyd is considering his options post 2007. he is yet to declare if intends to try out for australias diving team for the beijing olympics
  • macpie hates essendon but loves to talk about them
  • sir james > buckley
i think that is about everything.
