Do I have a 90 grand plumbing job waiting for me a few years down the line plus 20 grand (or more) from playing local footy?

I'd love to play Footy professionally but that doesn't mean rookies shouldn't be looked after more, especially with all the billions the AFL is raking in.

Your name is Kappa not Nostradamus, don't make it sound like these kids have a gun to their head when they come into the system.....by the way no 18 year old plumber makes $90,000........just ask the players of the 70's......80's........and even 90's what they would do if they came into the system now!

This is the age of "want" now......how about earning it first.

Agree on this.
Keith Grieg plumbing away.
People simply make a decision.
Do they go down a football careeer path, or not?
That simple.
It is what it is, pretty good coin.
Not happy with the pay?
Do something else.

Of course players should stand up for their rights. Sheer unmitigated arrogance & disrespect by the AFL for the polo playing CEO not to turn up to a meeting with the AFLPA.

Most players most of the time do not get a lot of money despite the popular & ill informed perception that players are well paid. Indeed most players are out of the system in less than 2 years or thereabouts. Players have nothing but their labour & the withdrawal of their labour in terms of power against the employer here if the employer chooses to ride roughshod over their concerns.

Imagine if your average Joe threatened to their boss that they wouldn't come into the office to work on Monday without a pay rise.

Can't see it going down too well :D

Maybe not, but if a union does it then things are a little different, which is coincidentally why unions exist

I don't think I said an 18 year old plumber makes 90 grand but thanks for clearing that up.

Why on earth does it matter that kids aren't forced to play? Does that mean they can't ask for a better deal?

The players of the past played a different game with very different rules off-field, comparing apples and oranges.

Haha, yeah, wouldn't go so well.

The thing that can get lost in this debate is that these guys aren't Average Joes. They potentially deliver an economic benefit well beyond average starting employees. Top grads in this country have been getting over AUD 100k starting salary + bonus for more than 20 years (especially banking & management consulting). Harvard/Columbia/Stanford etc law grads start on more than AUD 200k.

Kappa is right, most players have a small window to generate income, of which they are disproportionately taxed if averaged across a career, running the risk of long-term health costs caused by injuries, and disrupted from other education, apprenticeships, internships etc

The AFL knows that it can whip-up public support for their case by playing upon our instinct for envy.

In 1923, a third of the police force went on strike citing poor pay and conditions. There was looting and rioting in the city for a couple of days. The government eventually gave in and provided better pay and working conditions. They also discharged all of the officers who went on strike and mandated that they never work in the police force again. I am sure there is a lesson for both parties somewhere in there.

I think the lesson is that if both sides are genuine in their aims of reaching a negotiated agreed settlement that eventuates in a win/win for both sides, it can be achieved. But if one side to goes into the discussion only giving the negotiations 'lip service' the process will inevitably break down

The vast majority of 18 year old AFL rookies will be delisted in 2 years with no work experience or uni qualifications. The chance of a decent career is very small

What about mature age rookies? How many have we lost like Kyle Martin because they can get better wages just from an average job without all the "elite" baggage.
So they get delisted at age 20/21 and you think their working life and opportunities are over?? "The chance of a decent career is very small"? Why? You can go to uni as a 20 year old you know.
