What have we learnt about the 2018 AFL Trade period

its not finished but already some interesting observations, at least IMO:

1. Hawthorn remains the consummate “trader” in AFL footballers. They do it every year, and 2018 is shaping as another positive. To get Tom Scully for a set of steak knives is unbelievable, and assuming Chad Wingard finds his way to Hawthorn, they are two very handy acquisitions.
2. We are seeing another unintended consequence of creating two new AFL teams out of nothing - to lure quality players GC and GWS have had to pay overs. Now GWS can’t get rid of Scully quick enough. We heard too that GC has salary cap issues. WTF, they have no elite stars left.
3. Could 2018 see a shift in power? Contracted players seeking to be traded is nothing new, but Geelong has dug its heels in with Kelly, demanding fair return.
4. Finally, I still don’t know why the trade period goes on for so long....

Thoughts?

This trade period just highlights the advantages Melbourne based team have. Majority of trades have been interstate players going to Melbourne

Or it could just be the fact that there are 10 Melbourne teams.

Or most likely a little bit of both.

I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that when a player chooses to come to Melbourne, 9 out of 10 clubs will miss out on them.

Interstate clubs should have a larger salary cap.

Been there, done that.

Obviously this opinion is based on the current predicament at Alberton, which surely isn't based on salary cap problems as we've been repeatedly told that Port's books are fine and they are actually closer to the floor than the cap. Reality is Port snagged three of the big names last year, then lose two the following year, it's all swings and roundabouts.

Exactly just shows interstate clubs losing their players to Melbourne teams, we get a player here and there but majority of trades involve a player from an interstate club going to a Melbourne based club
These guys all say G'Day.
Tom Rockliff (free agent), Steve Motlop (free agent), Jack Watts

except for Tim Kelly, which according to Vic media is a crime against humanity
LOL. What is coming through loud and clear is that Kelly should NEVER have pursued a career in the AFL, not when he knew there was an 89% chance he would not be selected by a WA team.

I learned that even though I had never heard of him 2 weeks ago, Ryan Clarke is amazing in every single way :)
I learnt Shane McAdam is the next Patrick Dangerfield and Adelaide should thank their lucky stars SOS is a generous person

If we lose Burton it completely dampens whatever else we receive. Is the most exciting young player we've had come through in a long time. The club gave him Sam Mitchells number at the end of 2016 for f**** sake. Real downer to think we may lose him. A lot of Hawks supporters would rather we keep him and miss Wingard than lose him FOR Wingard.

How many Port players have actually moved back to Melbourne in the last 5 to 10 years? Chaplin. Who else?

If you look from the other side Ryder, Watts, Motlop, Matt White, Rockliff, Ebert, Toumpas, Polec, Hombsch, Schulz all joined Port from interstate.

Well then I guess you have to look at why a number of them (particularly two SA born players, one who "came home" in a trade, and one who refused to leave SA pre-draft) are suddenly wanting to leave in the same trade period.

Perhaps there are issues at Alberton to match the alleged issues at West Lakes.

The stupid minimum salary cap thing needs to be taken out the back and shot.
