What if 15 of the greatest tall forwards played 306 games (like coventry)

Jack Titus 970/294 @ 3.30

Lance Franklin 968/308 @ 3.14

Franklin should pass Titus next week or after the BYE.

90 more goals will see him pass Ablett & Wade as well and into 4th position.

112 more goals will see him attain 500 goals for two clubs, but you'd reckon he would have to play on in 2023 to achieve this.

Lance Franklin 969/309 @ 3.14

Franklin should pass Titus next after the BYE.

*11 more goals will see him join Lockett as the only players to kick 400+ at 2 clubs.
*31 more goals to become the 6th player to kick 1000 goals.
*89 more goals will see him pass Ablett & Wade as well and into 4th position of all time.
*111 more goals will see him become the only player to kick 500+ at 2 clubs.

franklin now joins lockett as the only 2 players to kick 400+ goals at 2 different clubs.

19 goals to reach 1000 career goals
51 goals to pass Ablett's 1031
77 goals to pass Wade's 1057
99 goals to become the only player to kick 500 at 2 clubs

19 games to become only the 5th player to play 150+ games at 2 clubs (quinlan, burgoyne, shaw, ashcroft)
37 games to 350 games / 119 goals to the big 1100 (if he plays in 2023 all of the above are achievable)

i doubt these can be achieved:
274 to pass Dunstall's 1254
319 to pass Coventry's 1299
380 to pass Lockett's 1360

Franklin will be 35 come the start of next season and the record for most goals after the age of 35 by any player is 107.

9 years at the hawks and into his 9th year and final year on his contract at the swans.

it may well be his final year.

he turns 35 at the start of the year - the record for a player age 35+ is 107 goals .

5 goals to reach 1000 goals
37 goals to pass Ablett's 1031
63 goals to pass Wade's 1057
85 goals to become the only player to kick 500+ at 2 clubs
105 goals to reach 1100 goals

14 games to become the 5th player to play 150+ games at 2 clubs
32 games to reach 350 games

milestones seemingly out of reach:
260 goals to pass Dunstall's 1254
305 goals to pass Coventry's 1299
366 goals to pass Lockett's 1360

games to reach 1000 goals:
201 - lockett
206 - dunstall
238 - ablett
239 - coventry
249 - wade
318+ franklin

John Longmire is an interesting one, up until the end of 1995 he was predominately a full-forward (spent sometime at fullback) averaging 3.19 goals per game, or 975 goals per 306 games. Just above team mate Carey's estimated total of 918.

His last three season he spent as a backup ruckman or defender, finishing with an average of 2.56 goals per game, or 783 goals per 306 games.

Seeing this actually brought up an interesting historical hypothetical for me. A distant relative of mine is Hugh "Bonny" Campbell, full forward in East Perth's team of the century and member of the West Aussie Hall of Fame. 630 goals in his 188 league games despite starting his career as a defender - an average of 3.35 goals a game. Purely as East Perth's full forward - 4.07 goals a game. Who knows how many more if he hadn't sat out 1923 after being denied a clearance to East Perth.

In 1926 Campbell kicked 89 goals, including finals, to create an Australian record. Collingwood champion Gordon Coventry beat it the following year with 97.

Here's what the Internet and history books haven't written. Collingwood tried to poach him. They flew him over and wanted him to play for them - why not, the man kicked 23 goals for Western Australia against Queensland at the 1924 Hobart carnival. I'm not sure what year this happened, I'll ask my family and see if I can find out. My grandmother told me he knocked them back because he didn't want to move across the country (and didn't like Melbourne weather enough to live here).

How different history could've been if Campbell had've made the move.

For the record
306 games at 3.35 goals a game - 1025 goals
306 games at 4.07 goals a game - 1245 goals

Given his performance at state carnivals, it could've happened.
And then there is Ken Farmer from North Adelaide in the SANFL. 224 games from 1929 to 1941 for 1417 goals.
1417/224 = 6.33
For 306 games it gives a remarkable 1,935 goals.
He would have had to have been chased by VFL clubs with those figures.

Peter Hudson is arguably the greatest FF who ever lived. Hell, he's arguably the greatest player of all time.

VFL 727 from 129 games.
Had he got to 306 at that average he ends up with 1725 goals.

Factoring in his career in Tasmania he ended up with 1687 from 288 games (1792 from 306 at that average).

And he missed around 3 years of serious football because of a knee reco that these days is 1 year.

His stats are just crazy.

Another 3 years of senior footy puts him at around 1100 goals from 200 games. That puts him GOAT territory. Full stop.

Yeah. Its debatable now because Lockett did play the games and did kick the goals.

Hudson is more a "what if". The seasons Hudson played were just insane. But his career was hammered by injury.

In many ways Hudson's greatness is underlined by his 1977 season. Hadn't played a full season at the top level since 1971 (dominated in Tassie though) and comes back carrying a bit of weight and puts through 110 goals to lead the comp (with Lethal second putting through 91 so it wasn't as though he was the sole avenue to goal).

AT LAST!!!!

1000/320 @ 3.13

if he plays this year and next and plays 30 games and kicked 100 goals he would:
pass Ablett's 1031
pass Wade's 1057
become the only player to kick 500+ at 2 clubs
become the 5th player to play 150+ games at 2 clubs
reach 350 games

238 - ablett
239 - coventry
249 - wade
320 - franklin

This season has also seen Franklin become the only player to kick 500 goals in Victoria and 500 goals outside Victoria. After tonight's game versus Essendon Franklin has 506 within Victoria and 510 outside Victoria.

53 goals
9 games

this will take franklin passed wade and at 1100/350.

not sure much petrol left in the tank after that.

Jakovich, Margitich, Todd and Wacko Jacko are some of the biggest what ifs ever
But no bigger than Hudson and Coleman. Those two were just ridiculous and imo the best two tall forwards ever.
I think if you count all of Hudsons games in VFL, Tas, State etc he played 350 and kicked over 2000 goals. Its ridiculous.
Coleman would've likely got better too and his goalkicking average would've increased

Ablett as a pure stay at home full forward from 1993 until his retirement after 1996.

444 goals from 81 games from ages 31 to 34 = 5.48 goals per game x 306 games = 1,677 goals. He was heavy and slowing down in those years. Before getting heavier he was simply the most breath taking footballer I have ever seen.

A couple more):
  • Templeton would've kicked 1025 goals in 306 games
  • If Jeremy Cameron maintains his current goal average and played 306 games, he'll finish with 801 goals.
  • Ron Todd wouldve kicked 1316 goals in 306 games
  • George Margitich wouldve kicked 1089 goals in 306 games
  • Wacko Jacko wouldve kicked 1151 goals in 306 games
  • Ted Potter (182 games, 0 goals) wouldve kicked 0 goals in 306 games.
bit late but luv the post

Reckon he’ll kick 33 next year?

franklin in 2023 - 19 goals in 13 games

hawthorn 580 in 182 @ 3.19
sydney 486 in 172 @ 2.83

and this is where it ends:

franklin 1066 in 354 @ 3.01
