Competition "What If" Wednesdays: Week 24 - The Cartel

77889_c345061166a9fe79142e200f7905f5bf.png

Each Wednesday (most likely not) a non-existing team that has been known in the AFL world as a proposition or a former team will be brought to life!

Each comp will run for 1 week or so and the poll will run for 1 week or more if needed.
The winner picks the next team in the list below
There are 3 routes you can go by if you're stuck
  • The chosen team has entered the competition in 2017 along with the current 18 OR
  • Design kits as if they've been in the competition all along OR
  • Go back in time when the team entered the competition or when a merger would've happened (if applicable)
eg. Design kits in 1991 when Adelaide entered the competition as the Crows
Design kits in 1997 when the newly formed Melbourne Hawks would play their first season OR
  • (For VFL Expansion) Accompany your kits with a backstory on how the team came to be

Your job is to produce a:
  • Home kit
  • Away kit (Home with white shorts is acceptable)
  • OPTIONAL 3rd
    • Clash kit
    • Heritage kit
    • Other kit
  • Club Logo (OPTIONAL BUT ENCOURAGED)

This week we ask....

WIW-TITLE-24.png

NEW RULES 23/6/15 (Read Carefully):
  1. Kits and Logo must be in 1 picture (Makes polls easier to fit everything in)
  2. The kits can consist of just a Jumper (Shorts and socks are encouraged to give a full identity effect)
  3. Minimum 2 kits and there's no limit to how many kits you can include after that
eg. Home and Away and/or Clash and/or Heritage and/or Others
  4. Maximum 2 entries per person
  5. For the former teams and Expansion teams I'll allow the use of the last jumper design the club used only once (Opens the door for that modern creativity)
  6. For the proposed teams Directly copying a kit (Colours and design) of any team is disallowed
  7. For the mergers, no restrictions. You can take any elements from the clubs involved in the merger and create whatever you please as long as you don't copy any proposed designs that have been brought up already
  8. Proposed and Former teams - Do not use logos or jumper artwork that is being used or has been used by the club before (exception in Rule 5 for former teams)
  9. Any team - Creating a logo from scratch is encouraged but you may take inspiration from and/or alter any sports logo to drive home your design.
  10. Any proposed designs that have been brought up for the current team will not be allowed for use
  11. Proposed Teams - You may use any colours you like even if it is being used by the team as long as it doesn't replicate any past/present designs the team has
TL-DR Version
  1. Just make an entry and I'll pull you up on anything :)

Any other questions will be answered

A hastily-formed cartel of four SANFL clubs...combining the Central District, North Adelaide, West Adelaide and Woodville-West Torrens football clubs...best option for a second South Australian team.

If not for the crows, this team would probably wear red, gold and blue, however I will try something out.
Also, I don't think they'd be called the Cartel, so I'll probably end up using a different name.

The hardest part of this is forming a strong identity out of four vastly different clubs

OK, this might take some time.

The year is 1995 and 'The Cartel' has won the second AFL license for South Australia.

The group soon found its self in a real dilemma of uniting the identities of four (count five if you include the merged Woodville and West Torrens) clubs. Early talks involved the club wearing a color from each of the merged clubs, red being the dominant color (being worn by three of the four). However it was eventually agreed that a strong, modern look would be needed to forge the unique identity of the club, standing aside and above it's formation clubs.

The very 90's color scheme of blue, green and white scheme was married with an equally 90's name, the Adelaide Super Sonics. This name was abandoned a year in, due to it's unfortunate acronym, and from 1997 the club, in it's "lolly wrapper" jumper was known as the Adelaide Sonics.

In 1998 the jumper was updated to include the clubs new logo, a fighter jet, much to the annoyance of Essendon. The new look and logo, however, did little to save the club from it's anonymity in s city besotted by their rivals and back to back premiers, the Adelaide Crows.

During the early naughties the Sonics continued to struggle for crowds. Their practice of moving training venues from Richmond oval to Prospect and eventually to Playford did little to help this, furthering the popular myth that the club was simply a nomadic tribe with no real roots. Eventually the club settled into their new Northern zone, and began to attract support from the growing local population. In 2008 the club board took the bold move to update the name and color scheme, seeking to drag the club out of the 90's. The jumper design was still popular to fans, but the addition of gun barrel grey and the new moniker of Jets, helped to modernize and legitimize the clubs branding before the AFL expanded into the gold Coast and Western Sydney.

Does this club exist for the sole purpose of pissing off Essendon fans? Because that's what it seems their entire history has been aimed towards. :) :thumbsu:

Well I had a go at this one seeing as though there are endless possibilities with a combination of 4 teams to work out. So here we go.

After the AFL decided to hand WA its second team in 1995, 3 years of hard work paid off for the 'Cartel' as they were announced as the 16th team of the Australian Football League. As the combination of four local SANFL clubs, the management of the new side had plenty of dilemma's in terms of choosing the new identity. Finally, it was decided that the team would become known as the Adelaide Reptiles and the colours would be green and red. The chairman said that these colours were chosen "to provide the team with a unseen identity in the national competition" and that "We felt the reptiles were a strong brand for a team with unique colours".

It's 1995 and "The Cartel" wins the licence to be the 2nd South Australian Team in the AFL

With the vast combinations possible from the 4 S.A teams coming together, the club decided to meet in the middle and use at least 1 colour from the 4 sides and mix them like a kid in Kinder. Taking the red from North Adelaide mixing with Woodvile-West Torrens Yellow to make Orange and Teal by combining Central District's blue and WWT's green. West Adelaide's black would be included but a shade lighter to make Charcoal.

All parties agreed and the next step was to form an identity true to SA. They chose the Bat as their mascot after the native Southern Forest Bat. They entered the competition as the Southern Bats Australian Football Club rocking a charcoal kit with a Teal yoke and Orange trim. The colour scheme was a real standout and with Polyester jumpers coming into the league at the time, in 1996 their run of the mill woolen yoke would now become a bats wing with their spikes. The design would be revised going into the new millennium.

This team will also appear in my alternate history portfolio which is still a work in progress.

In creating the identity for the new team, the bid group decided combining the separate colours and imagery of the member clubs of "The Cartel" (Central District, North Adelaide, West Adelaide and Woodville-West Torrens) to be too much of a task, realising this was the perfect time to create an entirely new and unique concept that would represent the member clubs rather than merging and mashing the teams together.

The name "South Coast Sharks" was chosen for many reasons- Given the vast geographical distance between the four teams, an all accompanying name was chosen to represent the entire area the member clubs occupy. It also tied in well with the Sharks nickname, coming from the famous Great Australian Bight that occupies the coast of South Australia.

At the launch of the club, the bid group said this of the new identity "The Shark is a strong and ferocious creature that is ruthless in its nature- to survive it must continually swim forward, a philosophy we wish to take upon as a young and developing club in the AFL. We will always look forward and attack, and will not be complacent and idle in our pursuit of success."

Indian Ocean Blue and Midnight Black was chosen to be the colours of the fledging club to create a bold and modern identity.

The application for the 2nd SA based AFL licence was won by 'The SANFL Cartel' which was made up of Central District, North Adelaide, West Adelaide and Woodville-West Torrens who only merged themselves in 1991. It was never going to be an easy task for the new board to create a club that would please everyone from the 5 supporter bases! The 'Ducks' name was chosen as ducks always stick together and the board was hoping that fans from all 5 supporter bases could join together in solidarity to support the new club.
The first 2 season were tough going for the Ducks but after they knocked off the Crows in the 1997 and 1998 Grand Finals everything started going forward from there and they havnt looked back since!
