And this!

What if Phil Carman didn't have a brain explosion and had NOT whacked Michael Tuck in the 1977 second semi?

(Goes into foetal position ;))

What if we used our number 1 draft pick on Matthew Pavlich and not Joshua Fraser?

I'd suggest we'd have won, one extra flag (2002) as a minimum (we'd win that game) Very likely 2 with 2007 knocking off Geelong in the Prelim then bashing up on Port Adelaide.
Then there's 2011?

Basically assuming all other variables were the same, Pavlich would have offered so much in partnership with firstly Anthony Rocca and then Travis Cloke.

That's one that you'd like to use hind sight.

(Note: it was absolutely universal that Josh Fraser was considered the number 1 pick at the time.)
What if we didn't trade pick three and got them both instead of going after McKee?

Bookmark an era then. :)

Even if you Never mind Fraser, the McKee thing well..... didn't work out did it?

Pick 14, Rusling and Davis for Chris Judd and Pick 44.

Because we don't get Cameron Wood we pick Dawson Simpson ahead of John McCarthy.

In 2008 we finish in a similar position with Judd and the midfield group still gaining chemistry slightly weaker in the ruck and less scoring power without Davis.

Best 22 in 2008 looks like.

B: Nick Maxwell ~ Nathan Brown ~ Ben Johnson
HB: Heath Shaw ~ Shane Wakelin ~ Heritier O'Brien

M: Rhys Shaw ~ Scott Burns ~ Scott Pendlebury
R: Josh Fraser ~ Chris Judd ~ Dane Swan

HF: Dale Thomas ~ Travis Cloke ~ Alan Didak
F: Chris Bryan ~ Anthony Rocca ~ Paul Medhust

I/C: Shane O'Bree ~ Tarkyn Lockyer ~ Martin Clarke ~ Jack Anthony

Jonathan Brown, 25 and Corrie go to Collingwood for Dale Thomas, Jack Anthony and pick 11. In this alternate time the Rhys Shaw incident doesn't happen so he stays.

Because we didn't recruit Wood our search for a ruckman continues. We use pick 25 and 45 on Robert Warnock.

The Loss of Thomas hurts our midfield/forward rotation slightly coupled with the loss of Jack Anthony but that is evened out by Brown and as a result we finish in a similar position. Our midfield chemistry is better but now our forward line chemistry needs work given the new dynamics.

Best 22 in 2009 looks like:

B: Nick Maxwell ~ Simon Prestigiacomo ~ Ben Johnson
HB: Heath Shaw ~ Leigh Brown ~ Heritier O'Brien

M: Rhys Shaw ~ Scott Pendlebury ~ Alan Didak
R: Robert Warnock ~ Chris Judd ~ Dane Swan

HF: Paul Medhust ~ Travis Cloke ~ Dayne Beams
F: Josh Fraser ~ Jonathon Brown ~ Brad Dick

I/C: Alan Toovey ~ Tarkyn Lockyer ~ Sharrod Wellingham ~ Shane O'Bree

With the partnership of Warnock and Fraser being serviceable we don't chase Jolly and keep pick 14 Lewis Jetta and still pick up Ball at 30 to replace an ageing O'Bree.

Best 22 for 2010

B: Nick Maxwell ~ Nathan Brown ~ Ben Johnson
HB: Heath Shaw ~ Ben Reid ~ Heritier O'Brien

M: Scott Pendlebury ~ Luke Ball ~ Alan Didak
R: Robert Warnock ~ Chris Judd ~ Dane Swan

HF: Paul Medhurst ~ Travis Cloke ~ Dayne Beams
F: Josh Fraser ~ Jonathon Brown ~ Brad Dick

I/C: Rhys Shaw ~ Alan Toovey ~ Sharrod Wellingham ~ Lewis Jetta

This side wins the premiership no draw.

Brad Dick doesn't get injured in this alternate timeline and Medhurst finds easier to keep his spot playing his role with Brown in the forwardline. And Fraser playing as a 2nd ruck the year before is less cooked and keeps his spot.

Medhurst still best 22 plays on for another year with Lockyer given the tap on shoulder.
The club still recruits Tarrant and Krakouer.
Sub rule also doesn't come in because **** the sub rule.

2011 best 22:
B: Nick Maxwell ~ Chris Tarrant ~ Ben Johnson
HB: Heath Shaw ~ Ben Reid ~ Heritier O'Brien

M: Lewis Jetta ~ Luke Ball ~ Scott Pendlebury
R: Robert Warnock ~ Chris Judd ~ Dane Swan

HF: Brad Dick ~ Travis Cloke ~ Dayne Beams
F: Josh Fraser ~ Jonathon Brown ~ Andrew Krakouer

I/C: Alan Toovey ~ Rhys Shaw ~ Alan Didak ~ Sharrod Wellingham

With big game players in Judd and Brown added we go back to back.

Fraser retires as a 200+ game two time premiership player and Medhurt goes on to play for GWS after missing out on the 2011 grandfinal. Lewis Jetta after his two years asks for a trade, says the premierships have been fun but I want to go home and Brad Dick and Alan Toovey follows suit.

Ross Lyon loving his defensive players gives up pick 20 for Toovey which is on traded for Danyle Pearce to try and replace the run of Jetta and Dick.
Jetta and Dick both go to west coast for pick 23 and Scott Lycett. Pick 23 is used on Henry Schade just for you THATSGOLD

In an effort to replace Brad Dick's scoring power and reduce the workload on our ageing mids we decide to play Judd, Swan more in the forward line and give Ball more of a rest down there as well.

2012 best 22:
B: Nick Maxwell ~ Nathan Brown ~ Chris Tarrant
HB: Heath Shaw ~ Ben Reid ~ Heritier O'Brien

M: Sharrod Wellingham ~ Luke Ball ~ Danyle Pearce
R: Robert Warnock ~ Scott Pendlebury ~ Dayne Beams

HF: Dane Swan ~ Travis Cloke ~ Chris Judd
F: Scott Lycett ~ Jonathon Brown ~ Andrew Krakouer

I/C: Ben Johnson ~ Rhys Shaw ~ Alex Fasolo ~ Alan Didak

No knee injuries for Krak or Ball and Fasolo breaks out just like he did. Nathan Brown comes back and Tarrant plays Toovey's old role.
Wow what an imagination

What if the ball didn't bounce away from Milne?

Was Johnson a serious chance of stopping the unthinkable?
Let's assume Milne goals and they win.... yikes

Then Ross Lyon is touted as a great coach, stamped a winner.

Malthouse even less liked by us than now.

The biggest what if in the entirety of Malthouse's tenure is:

- What if we had picked up Pavlich instead of McKee?

I'd put my money on us winning 02, 03, 07, 10, 11 easily.
Not 2003, just can't have that one.
Brisbane so strong.
Four more flags? (Or three more as we won 2010) Why not?
Malthouse would hence forth be in Norm Smith category level (6 flags).

They'd be no changeover I'm guessing either.

Fremantle would have taken Pavlich at 2 and we'd have drafted Fraser and Hasleby/Brown/Roach. Freo knew Richmond wanted a mid, so took Hasleby first. Had we held pick 3 Freo would have taken Pavlich.

Maybe the question should be what if Freo won against WC in R1 (13.20(98) v 15.12(104)) or Richmond in R13 (19.12(127) v 19.13(128)). If Freo win either match they don't get a priority pick and we enter the draft with picks 1 + 2.

2 more questions relating to this draft:
  • what if Roach didn't get injured?
  • what if we had instead drafted Corey (8), McPharlin (10) or Glass (11) at 7?
The trade of King + 3 for McKee + one of Corey/McPharlin/Glass looks the goods.

And this!

Would of Beaten North Easily:'(

I heard we had some Interest Fiora or Would we pick L Brown?;)

On the Draft Coverge Micky McGuane said we should Draft Glass

On the Draft Coverge Micky McGuane said we should Draft Glass

Great video to dig up. We certainly took ages with pick 7, wonder what the delay was and who else we were discussing. As you say Glass was mentioned in the video, being from WA maybe we expected Freo to take him instead of Brown?

Wouldn't be the first time. But the way Lenny Hayes kicked it was always going to bounce away from Milne. What if Hayes actually took his time to hit Milne properly?

What if MM hadn't dropped the ball and moved Reid off (and Tarrant onto) Hawkins when Pods went off in 2011?

What if MM hadn't had a complete brain explosion and played J Cloke anywhere other than CHF in the 2003 grand final? I know we were belted but it threw our entire team out.

What if McGuane hadn't dropped that mark in 1994?

What if we picked Ellis and Thomas as expected in 2005 instead of Thomas and Pendlebury?

What if a team had come up with an acceptable offer when we threw Pendles' name in the hat in trade talks a year later?

Guess Depends what Picks we got as we might Finished Lower

What if a team had come up with an acceptable offer when wet put Pendles up for trade a year later?

When did we put Pendles up for Trade? 1st I heard of it

Who werewe gonna trade pendles for?

It was all over the radio during trade week after Pendles' first season that we were floating him as trade bait to all and sundry to see if we could prize out a top player (we were looking for midfielders from memory). Noone valued him highly enough and we were happy to keep hold.

Fraser probably our third best on in 2002, kicked three goals while giving McKee a chop out in the ruck. Without Fraser we would've had to ruck Rocca which probably would've mitigated his impact up forward.

We would've lost by more if we had Pavlich instead of Fraser in 2002.

I get your point, there is a lot of merit to it especially for specific games, but I just can't get past what Pavlich would have brought to the table overall. Game on game on game.
Bona fide elite level talent.
We would be just better for him, superior side, in my view by quite a margin.
