just a quick question here, and a bit of a hypothetical.

back when the Chris Judd draft was taking place, if Luke Hodge or Luke Ball was still around at pick number 3 (assume Graham Polak and Ashley Sampi were taken with picks 1 and 2) and we had to choose between Hodge, Ball or Judd.

AT THE TIME (I.e. we know nothing of what we know now) who do you think the club would've taken??

for me - I've thought about this quite a few times, and I actually think the club would've taken Hodge. I know the club expected Judd to go in the top 2, hence had no plans to snare him, but I still think that Hodge had a bit more of an heir of certainty around him, whereas Judd had his shoulder issues and Ball had the issue of beeing still a boy and having the next year at school.....

I think it the end that draft worked out perfectly for us...

Its really a moot point, because its impossible to have any idea what was in our recruiters minds at the time.

The impression I get is that the club was absolutely ecstatic to get Chris Judd, and rated him extremely highly indeed. Assuming they had pick 1, had they not decided to select Judd I'm guessing they would have thought seriously about Polak ahead of anyone else, what with the local connection. They wouldn't have selected Judd unless they were absolutely certain he had no worries with his shoulders, and if that were the case he looked a better prospect than Hodge or Ball.

As a matter of fact, I'm convinced that our recruitment staff have really had their **** together in recent years in terms of their drafting.

In 2000, we got McDougall at pick 5, Kerr at 18, and Humm at 36. We also elevated Cox and Green off the rookie lists.

In 2001, we got Judd at 3 and Sampi at 6. Seaby came at 22.

In 2002, we only had late picks, but of Johnson at 24, Staker at 37, and Selwood at 53, I'm convinced we've picked up one gun in Staker, and two others who show significant promise.

What I'm saying is that I think the staff new exactly what they were getting when they drafted Judd- it must have taken something pretty compelling to go for somebody other than the hometown kpp in Polak, and they obviously saw something special in the young juddster.

Uhuh I agree, I think our recruitment staff are the best in the league actually.

This was in the West several months ago and the Eagles said that Judd was their No 1 priority but they expected him to be gone before they had the chance. I also heard that they expected Sampi to go to Freo and Polak to us.

The Club said they would have taken Judd at #1. I remember a bigfooty phantom draft done by everyone that had him at #1 as well.

In hindsight Polak would have been of more immediate value to us than Sampi, but he's repaid us already with those couple of last minute game saving goals.

I know an ex Eagles Recruiting Staff member who was involved in that choice. Judd was number 1. Have no doubt about that. They wanted a game breaker. Judd was the complete package. This is fact.

What if?

What if I was taking a shower and I slipped up on a bar of soap?

OH MY GOD ID BE KILLED!!!!!

I reckon Carlton are going thru the biggest 'what if' of all time.

What if they weren't salary cap cheating dogs ...... they'd have Daniel Wells ( & Goddard?) this year.

Thanks Big Jack:D

From all reports I heard, Judd would have gone at #1 for sure except there was that question mark about his shoulders holding up at AFL level.
