What's a sycophant?

A sycophant is a servile person who, acting in their own self interest, attempts to win favor by flattering one or more influential people, with an undertone that this is at the cost of their own personal pride, principles, and peer respect.

Imagine if Carlton took the initiative as a sporting organisation and one that brings together people from many different cultures together to organise world peace. I know it is ridiculous but my question is, what would Mr. Patrick Smith (I refuse to drop to his level by calling him names) then label us?

It would probably be something like nosy meddlers as he criticises how we ruined the livelihoods of so many arms dealers and dictators.

His anger is getting very tiring and boring.

Thanks CJ. :D

A sycophant is someone who sucks up to someone else by flattering them and misleading them to gain that persons favour or respect. It is someone who leaves all their principles and integrity behind just to get ahead.

Describes Patrick Smith perfectly!

So he used that word to describe Carlton in the headline and all through the article? Sheesh thats a bit harsh I would have thought. Wouldn't like to be PS walking into a crowd of blues supporters.

North supporters missed their chance to lynch him at their fightback meeting.

read the whole thread you idiot...

this fat prick has a personal vendetta against the Carlton football club. Try getting up before midday to collect your dole cheque and listen to him with that pathetic attempt at radio commentary in Kevin Barlett...

Now, now there is no need to go off the deep end. I thought it was a disrespectful word to use to describe a football club. I wouldn't worry too much because most folk don't know what sycophant means.

Patrick was very clever in his word choice when you think about it. Because what he really wanted to say was lying, cheating, tanking, scum of the earth rabble...but that would have been going too far.

Sycophant huh? I'll use that one when i bump into a carlton supporter at centrelink

Least your honest.

I thought they deposited pension cheques directly into bank accounts these days... then again those Carlton old time loyal Carlton supporters with their home made knitted scarves and 10-15 year old jumpers (a true sign of their long time loyality... unlike the humorus situation I found with so many new Richmond scarves, bomber jackets and jumpers...) probably want cash in hand...

either way good luck on your hunt for a Carlton Supporter at centerlink...

by the way I think you need to look over the definition of Sycophant again... possibly even invest in an item called a Dictionary... although if you take a few more wild stabs in the dark you bound to eventually come up with an accurate enough description.

Nothing wrong with buying new clothes every once in a while. 'Clothes maketh the man, naked people have little or no influence on society'. Don't think you'll see the carlton crew wandering the streets in 15 year old carlton scarves.

My apologies to Barb who can wear her old carlton jumper and scarves anytime she likes:thumbsu:

Oh yes the night grand finals. You lucky man. Might be time to upgrade to the new improved scarf, if only for the sake of those trying to eat their hotdogs in your vicinity. Or at least have it washed.

Sometimes in life you just have to let go and move on. 95 was last century.

Man, you make it too easy sometimes. Someone had to say it:

NOT AS LAST CENTURY AS 1980!

Do you think so Bee?

I'd have thought that PETTY, F@#KEN SH!T FOR BRAINS would be more accurate.

Oh you're so wrong. I was helped into the padded cell after a game in late 2003, during the Spud years.

I still have my own teeth though, so thats a start.

And now i know what sycophant means:D
