What is the best AFL ground surface ?

Without doubt, the best game I have walked on after a match is the Gabba. Like a bowling green. Amazing.Waverley was good also.

Are you all trying to be stupid, or are you stupid? The best surface in the AFL is Subiaco. When it rains at Subi we don't end up with puddles like the Gabba and we don't end up with mud in the middle of the ground like most Vic grounds. Football Park comes a close second, howver at night the dew makes it a very boring contest with the ball constantly going out of bounds. For atmosphere nothing compares to the MCG, but it's surface doesn't compare to Subiaco.

Yep, Subi is such a great ground. How many knees has it claimed now? After the game I saw earlier in the year when it pissed down but the players still handled it like a dry day I'd say the Gabba. Now that Waverley's gone anywaay.

C'mon Dave! I think one (1) knee injury happened there last year, and none this year (so far -touch wood), to David S...owski (sorry), but it might have even been the WACA. It was pretty hard around '96 when Jako etc were injured, but they fixed it up since.
I was on it on Sunday, and the surface is supurb. Drainage is far better than the SCG and GABBA.

Eagle_Fan as much as I love Subi, I certainly dont think it's the best arena in the game. for the reason that at each of the goal ends the grass is quite bare and it looks as if it needs a bit of a rest (which it will since the next few games will be played at the WACA)

I think the MCG is the best right now and I cant see that changing

Apart from Colonial and a wet SCG, Is there a ground which doesn't have a good surface at the moment?

I've never been to Subiaco, so I don't know about that, but:

The GABBA - Excellent, much better than last year
SCG - Poor when it rains and always rough in the middle
Football Park - The grass seems too long and catches dew easily
MCG - A lot better now than it used to be, not the best though
Optus Oval - Absolutely magnifficent surface, like a bowling green
Shell Stadium - Only gets 7 games a year and the surface is always perfect, Last season Mick Malthouse said that the surface reminded him of Subiaco, now that's a complement, very unlike Mick.

This year I have been to the MCG, Colonial, Optus Oval and travelled interstate to Subiaco and the GABBA.
The MCG has the best atmosphere. The turf is not the best though, yet it is passable.
As a Carlton supporter I love Optus Oval and the atmosphere in the social club is great. Viewing from there is also good and you are close to the action. The turf is fantastic, totally lush yet the facilities are B-Grade.
Subiaco was nice, nothing too special.
The GABBA is fantastic now that it is completed. Turf was good too.
As for Colonial, the first time I went I sat behind the goals on the first level and the atmosphere was fantastic. You're really close to the action and I throughly enjoyed myself (even though we lost).
The second time I sat second tier in the middle of the ground. It was absolutely fantastic. It is the corporate seating though so not everyone can go there. Wayne Jackson was sitting nearby so it must be good. Unfortunately the turf is a disgrace and embarrassment to the league.
My verdict is Optus Oval has the best surface, MCG the best atmosphere and Colonial the best seating. If you could mix all them together you would have one amazing stadium.

Football Park easily.

The ground is always dewy a night so they don't have to water it.

Its always freezing so your beer stays cold.

Your a long way from the action so you don't have to listen to any nasty things that the players call each other.

The aluminium bench seats give you a numb bum so you get plenty of exercise getting up & down.

Traffic is murder so you can listen to the whole wrap up of the game on the car radio.
