i would have said machine head is the big one..but its hard to pick just one cos theyve had so many diff era's now

i also really like the coverdale hughes ones for the glenn hughes vocal contributions actually...and tommy bolin's come taste the band is pretty fabbo too

perfect strangers was a great album..and a cool comeback

house of the blue light is embaressingly boring

and although i quite like to listen to the one with joe lynn turner (one of my fave singers)...that really isnt a deep purple album..should have called it something else/rainbow...

perpendicular is pretty good

I'm not sure compilation or live albums should be included but when you consider that Made in Japan is 29 years old this year and is still the greatest live album ever produced it has to get my vote.

I went with the California Jam CD/video, the video in particular is great viewing. Glenn Hughes really added to DP during his stint, Cal Jam probably being his best work.
Blackmore highlights include that best-ever version of Mistreated (especially the intro, and just after the quiet bit in the middle), and the jamming bits later in the show which incorporate You Fool No One and the intro to Still I'm Sad.
The bit that obviously couldn't be caught on CD, and which makes the video even better, is at the end of Space Truckin', where Ritchie has his amp blown up - the roadie put too much petrol in the back of the amp and the explosion was huge and set a quarter of the stage on fire. Ritchie, not to be outdone by a burning stage, smashes up his guitar, shoves it INTO the TV camera, and chucking the rest of it into the crowd, piece by piece.
After the show the band all faced arrest and had to escape by chartered helicopter.

Now THAT'S what I call entertainment!!!

Ian Gillan is THE man,
"Deep Purple In Rock" is their greatest achievement, ("Machine Head" a close second) from the bombastic opening of "Speed King" to right thru to the closing of "Hard Lovin' Man" ( my favorite track on the album)

The 25th Anniversary Edition of "in Rock" contains a few extra tracks and remixes..includin' a tasty little instrumental titled "Jam Stew"....a nice little toetapper.

where's wally?

P.S. Darky,
Where can i get the video of "California Jam"? Got the CD , but can't find the video anywhere. Remember watchin' it at a mates place stoned off me t!ts years ago.

Apart from Smoke on the Water i never understood why so many ppl liked Deep Purple. Cool band name but thats about it. I know there a good band, dont crucify me but i have just never gotten into them.

Fear not, Wally! It's out there...

Wally, it's available at two places I know of...

1- Rental copy at Video Ezy, on Mt.Alexander Rd, Moonee Ponds
2- For purchase, I saw a copy recently at Gaslight Records on Bourke St in the city. It's a re-done video with about four minutes of extra footage, so the video is around 78-80 minutes all up. Selling for $45 I think. If it's not in stock it can definitely be ordered.

Great to hear DP fans are still live and kicking. You're all legends (esp. Darky as he is a Roos man too!)

My favourite moment from California Jam is the ballet-style piroetting from Richie during one song...and of course Space Truckin'.

The best DP album by a mile has to be Burn. Every track is a winner and the playing is amazing. Steve Morse isn't a wart on Richies arse.....

I have an interview with Jon Lord on tape somewhere, and he says something along the lines of "Ritchie looks like he is dancing forward across the stage, but he was actually blown forward by the force of the explosion (of the petrol at the back of his amp". Lord was at the opposite end of the stage, and was apparently blown off his organ stool as well.

Of the albums Blackmore played on, he didn't rate Stormbringer at all. Thought it was sh*t, and left the band because of it. Burn and Stormbringer are my two favourite studio albums, so I find it interesting as a Blackmore fan, to hear he doesn't like Stormbringer.

I think it was more band politics as to why he dislikes that album
As in I think he was losing control. As it ended up Coverdale took John Lord and Ian Paice with him in (early) Whitesnake so maybe it stems from there?
