The real crowd in 1970 is not known as thousands of fans got into the Members for free after breaking down the fence around the tennis courts at the back of the Members stand! Some estimates put the crowd at at least 130,000.The actual attendance for the 1970 Grand Final was technically 121,697, as The Devil Himself was also present at the MCG that day (according to Pie fans). However, metaphysical beings who don't need to pay for admission are not counted for the purposes of the 'official' attendance.*
(*This has been standard practice for ground managers since 1897.)
Therefore, applying this same methodology, the biggest AFL crowd that I have been a part of was the 2008 GF, where the actual attendance was 100,013 (fittingly, the devil's number).
I was at the first two matches, but not the third. My dad was at
MCG record 1970 GF Pies V Blues 122k
Waverley record 1991 Hawks v Pies 93k
SCG record 1965 GF St George v Souths 78k
Fair effort.
2018 Grand Final.
100,022. The biggest crowd since the 1986 Grand Final.
80% of the support was for Footscray too by the sound of the tv99,981. I will find the 19 bastards who didn't come.
And from the birds eye camera view when I watched the replay.80% of the support was for Footscray too by the sound of the tv
