The Jimmy seems to be getting a liittle bit of press.Article in todays Hun about the Jimmys ability in the wet. "Want an interstate superhero? Just add water", nice quote from Mark Stevens. And not only that, hes out of contract they say and I think Jimmy's leverage might be building. So, what is he be worth?
Money as always is relative and in this case its relative to 100% of the Cap, so just how much of the Cap would /should we pay this man, this rain lover.
I figure that our best players are on around 5%-7.5% of the cap( around 300,000-450,000) but considering TPP , we wouldnt and couldnt have too many at this level.Sign him up at this amount and it WILL cost us player down the track. I say 3.5% would be worthy of his current talents but will that get the job done if the hyenas are yapping.

My $270k comment was more about what he will be earning next year rather than what he's worth in the open market. OK, perhaps $280-$290k but realistically Ling, Corey, Chapman, Ottens, Enright, King, Scarlett, Kelly, G Ablett and a few others would be on similar money plus some so there's already approx $4m gone (Especially with Ottens wage)

Having said that I highly doubt whether anyone would pay $500k for him despite his good form this year. I'm a huge supporter of him - as per the recent thread re: improved players (some believed he hadn't improved!!!)

$500 - $540, umm not quite. Even on the open market that is going above and beyond. You pay $400-600 for a KP, Ruckman or stupidly good midfielder like a Ball or Judda. I love Jimmy but no need to get carried away.

Why am i always the vioce of reason ;)

The ridiculous contracts that were entered into 4-5 years ago are a thing of the past.

I also believe that the public think some players are on a hell of a lot more than what they're really on.

I’ll throw up a bit of a conspiracy theory on this one (not that I necessarily believe it)…

A similar situation happened last time Bartel’s contract was up for renewal. Perhaps he and his manager deliberately hold off on signing anything in the March-July period (before the weather really turns cold and wet) because they know Jim revels on the wet tracks and they’d like him to show off his wares in the sloppier conditions to raise his market value.

Last week’s match was a perfect case in point – 32 possessions, 10 marks, 12 tackles. Everyone’s been talking about him all week and surely he’s raised the interest of other clubs, thereby inflating his asking price.

Just a thought.

Hey guys, not trolling. I was actually discussing the idea of Collingwood approaching Jimmy. If he asked for a trade, would you the suporters be happy with a Davidson + our first rounder (probly around 5-7) for Bartell and your 1st rounder (around 16-18)?

Not surprisingly, I think you'll find most people here wouldn't go for that deal. In the unlikely event that Bartel said he wanted out, Geelong would command something like a first round pick and a good player or a first and second round pick. And I don't think anyone here, including you could call Davidson a "good" player at this stage in his career and considering the injuries he's had.

What about Davidson and our 1st rounder for bartell?

Who is Davidson?

The only player i would accept would be T.Cloke or Clement.

Quality for Quality. Clement is unrealistic but T.Cloke might be handy down at the cattery. Fortnuatly, niether would happen. Jimmy Bartel will remain a cat!

Go cats!

Thanks Silvercat,

I was being sarcastic. I know who is he and he is an OK footballer. By saying 'who is Davidson', i was meant to suggest that he is nowhere near the player than Jimmy Bartel is and there is noway the cats would consider letting him go for a player like Davidson.

Sorry for the confusion.

Good post!

Let's be honest Jimmy hasn't had the type of year that has put him in contention for an AA place (yet :) ). Until you can do that as a midfielder you can't be asking for buckets....unless Eddie approaches you of course.

As much as I love the dude...he could be asking for too much couldn't he?
I dunno, maybe it's blind faith in the club, but I thought with the way we have managed the slary cap in the last few years, Geelong would be paying players like Jimmy a very fair amount...no extra retainer $$'s at all.
While giving us glimpses of supreme class in the wet, he hasn't done enough to justify a fat pay packet...yet ;)

Jimmy, had better stay right where he is.. He is a courageous player. how many times do you see him go back into packs and take marks??? Geelong hurry the hell up and sign him!!!! And Collingwood can take their business elsewhere.. their offer for their first pick last year for quote "Kelly or Bartel", was the best laugh i had all year..

Would not trade Bartel for the world.

$360,000 i'd sign him for and throw away the contractual key for 3 years.
