millewa football league plays its grand final at Lake Cullulleraine every year. About 40 minutes west of Mildura so in terms of remoteness it’s the furthest you can get from Melbourne while still being in Vic.

Grand final is next weekend with Bambill playing Werrimull just to add to the remoteness. Werrimull has the most remote pub in vic too - worth a drive out - while Bambill is one of the most successful country footy sides that nobody could find on a map.

Whose home ground is Lake Cullulleraine? Or is it just the league headquarters and only finals are played there?

Werrimull and Meringur both play home games there. The reserve has two ovals, one for each with the clubrooms in the middle, though they don’t play home games at the same time. Grand final is played on meringur’s ground, which is the one closer to the SA border.. Both teams train at grounds in Mildura though.

Other clubs used to play there too. Some now defunct, however of the current lot Bambill traditionally did (before that, they themselves had their own ground at Bambill itself which is now just a sign one old club member recently commissioned) but they now play home games at Mildura Senior College, where they also train.

With less people out in these farming communities it just made sense for teams to train in “town”, though at least two of the clubs maintain that presence at the Lake. Meringur train at Gol Gol, just across the river in NSW, on alternate nights to Gol Gol FNC while Werrimull share a ground with Mildura West Cricket Club.

Werrimull beat Bambill on Saturday to claim the flag, ending Bambill’s streak at 4. The paper had an interesting stat- this was the league’s 100th season and now Bambill (30) and Werrimull (20) have 50 flags between them.

I'm heading to Halls Gap next month. One of the route options coming from Adelaide goes past Laharum that appears on Google Maps to be a football ground in need of a town.

Cora Lynn in west gippy a bit like that as well - a store and a footy club…
