What is the worst game you have ever watched?

Round 20 1999. Bitterly cold night at old Pluracy Park (West Lakes) Port Vs Melbourne. I was hosting some customers in an open air 4 seater corporate box. Scores at half time were Port 4.10 to Melbourne 1.8. We ended up setting a drinking record for the box and I received a written warning from my manager for "excessive alcohol comsumption". The football was atrocious. We ended up inviting other bored randoms in for a drink and had 9+ people in the box scoffing red. Port ended up being triumphant 8.15 to 6.10. I dont think I saw a kick after half time.

Collingwood 54-51 Adelaide = Round 21 2010

Melbourne 28-61 Collingwood = Round 12 2014 (Queen's Birthday)

Carlton 45-57 Collingwood = Round 15 2016

Collingwood 36-36 Richmond = Round 2 2020

Collingwood 51-61 Geelong = Round 11 2021
Also can include these classic matches from last year's debacle as well:
  • Richmond 34-26 Sydney = Round 6, 2020

  • Fremantle 16-48 Geelong = Round 8, 2020

  • Fremantle 50-19 Sydney = Round 13, 2020

  • Melbourne 33-47 Fremantle = Round 16, 2020

  • North Melbourne 34-49 West Coast = Round 17, 2020

There was a woeful Roos-Swans game in Canberra around 2008 at the time a pope was dying in Rome. In the second half all the church bells around the city started riding and we all looked confused. Someone suggested "maybe the pope has died?" and another replied "lucky bastard - he doesn't have to watch the rest of this game." The pope hadn't died and the game ground on and on.

That was in 2005. Sydney kicked a wayward 7.17 at Manuka

  • Melbourne 33-47 Fremantle = Round 16, 2020

That North v Eagles game was bizare.
QTR time, North lead 18-0. HT, eagles lead 18-19. No score to one end of the ground for a whole half.

Brothers, any nominations from this year to topple Dees v GCS 2016 or Saints v North Good Friday 2018?

Yup, Adelaide v North round 23.

North had about a 10 minute period where they were competitive, then they just decided to down tools and go on holiday. Adelaide to their credit played hard football, but they weren't clinical enough to make it interesting in the morbid "just how badly are they going to belt them" way, which meant we got a 2 hour game which promised a lot devolve into a dull 7 goal win. Like the only story line was the couple of nice club building moments near the end of the game for Adelaide, after 100 minutes of junk time.

Probably can add these 2 matches from 2021 to the great list of crap AFL matches of all time as well tbh:
  • Round 11: Collingwood (6.15 51) - Geelong (8.13 61)
Basically a snooze-fest of a match with no-one really wanting to score for three quarters, until the last quarter when Collingwood finally decided to start playing more attackive football after kicking just one goal for 3 quarters of the match with Geelong also not being much great either and were basically in defence mode for pretty much all game.

  • Round 15: Richmond (2.10 22) - St. Kilda (9.8 62)
Maybe the worst ever prime time match to be played IMO (minus 2020 ofc). Yes, the weather wasn't great and it would have probably have been a hindrance as such, but Richmond was bang awful in that game and St. Kilda weren't that hot either throughout the season as well + the fact of two defence oriented styles of footy, resulted in such an awful match to watch with skills pretty much below average for both teams.

When Geelong can dictate a game against poor opposition in recent years, there have been some absolutely awful ones to watch.

Just this season. All shockers.

That hawthorn/st.kilda game at the G many years ago, I just remember the entire crowd booing at half time due to the piss poor standard of footy
It was horrendous. 4 goals scored to half time. 🤮

The 2nd Western Derby of 2009 was an atrocious game of football.
Freo- 10.11(71)
WCE- 8.18(66)

Sure it was close, but the 'flow' was non-existent and the skills were left at home that day.
Yeah, for all the fake media build-up to the Derby's there have been some shockers.

The 1st Derby in 2015 was fun for about 10 minutes, then it looked like 2 teams who didn't want to hurt each other. The stadium was half empty by halftime.

1997 Fremantle 48 def Swans 33. 8 behinds was the half time swans tally. Mark Bayes kicking was a shocker but the match overall was one big eyesore.

I remember that game and it was played in teeming rain which would have affected the scoring.

Compare that to a Fremantle vs. Brisbane game in early 2012 where the Dockers beat the Lions 8.16-64 to 5.5-35 in Perth on a fine and sunny Saturday, the temperature in the early 20s and barely a breath of wind. Clearly weather wasn't a factor here, it was just a flat out bad game.

But not as bad as Fremantle vs. Port Adelaide at Optus Stadium in 2018. As I have noted previously, that game is the worst of the worst. Watching Adam Sandler's 2011 film 'Jack & Jill', the musical 'Cats' from 2019, 'The Star Wars Holiday Special' from 1978 and 'The Garbage Pail Kids' from 1987 as a movie marathon would be less painful than watching a replay of this game on DVD.

Although having said that WAFL teams South Fremantle and Claremont gave it a pretty good shake in the 2021 preliminary final. In fine conditions, South Fremantle kicked two goals in each of the first three quarters while Claremont were goal-less to three quarter time in this awful spectacle. Then Claremont kicked three goals in the final term while South failed to score at all, but it was too little too late. Not surprisingly, Subiaco easily defeated South Fremantle in the Grand Final the next week.

When do Hawthorn play Collingwood this year? That will be a trash game

Not as bad as Collingwood vs. Geelong. For some reason the Magpies and Cats always play dreadful games against each other, regardless of who wins, where it is played or if it is close, an average margin or a one-sided contest.

Round 1 - 2011 - Geel v StK - Friday night game

Talk about dour 2 goals to 1 at h/t 4 goals a piece at 3qtr time - and 6 goals each at the final siren

Geel have been generally shocking to watch the last few years because of the slow chip around method - only rivalled by the Hawks with some of their games at York Park

Honestly those Haw games at York Park - are worse and more cringeworthy than the Elvis movies of the 1950s

I think it was Richmond v Collingwood, round 3 2020.

The first game back after the Covid break. A 36 all draw would make for an rousing NFL match or an exciting and absorbing NRL match or an eye-poppingly mind-blowingly astonishing EPL match, but it makes for an incredibly dull AFL game.
