I remember back in the 70s when it was still illegal to tackle a player who was in the act of bouncing the ball. So if a player was tackled as he threw the ball out in front of him to bounce, it was a free kick for holding the man as the player bouncing was deemed not to be in possession of the ball at the time. Of course players exploited this mercilessly, waiting to get tackled, going for the 'bounce' and hey presto free kick. The rule makers woke up to this and changed the interpretation to the player bouncing the ball to be in possession, so the free was then paid to the tackler for holding the ball. Anyway, when this rule change was first introduced, maybe some umpires didn't quite get the interpretation or were just a bit overzealous in their application ... but I remember a game on the weekend the rule change was introduced, where a nippy rover was zooming along and dodged around this lumbering ruckman, had a bounce, and the umpire blew the whistle and pinged him for holding the ball. Even the ruckman was gobsmacked and laughed as he was given the ball. On the local Football Show the next day the commentators thought it was a huge joke. Don't know that it was the worst umpiring decision, but it sure was funny.
