i know 16 clubs wouldn't make an oversight like this and forget about them and i know this has been done to death.

both boys are 192cm so thats no problem ... and i know they lack mobility but thats not the total issue.

there has to be something more serious as to why they were both overlooked!!!!!!! i mean i know adelaide/port adelaide wouldnt have passed up grundy if they thought he was worth snagging and with our late picks we would have snagged kirkby if he was thought of as a good prospect.

im at a complete loss ... i think the recruiters know something we don't maybe????? or were they just overated hacks who aren't suited to the step up to afl????

cheers

but thats gone off in a tangent .... so i wanna start a thread specifically and keep it on these 2 blokes ... to try and find out from someone who may know why they didn't get picked up!

i mean why were BOTH overlooked by 16 clubs??? there has to be something more serious than problem with mobility ... maybe clubs dont think there up to afl or something? i mean just cos there not mobile doesn;t mean 16 clubs wouldnt pick them up! for example ryan willits isn't exactly mobile but he still got picked up!

its gotta be their attitude or something?

Both of these guys tested terribly at the draft camp in most of the running areas especially pace and agility. Both will be high rookie picks though.

Kirkby -

Had a awsome patch of 6/7 games but was sposed to be nothing special for most the year. He is old for a drafty, 19 now or soon, too small (190?) and light. He has a odd playing style also, not classy by any means.

Saying that he has alot of good attributes; creativy, long kick, battler (rather than styish), smart/good user of the ball. Id like to have him at Richmond.

kirkby played 10 games with pioneers listed in best players 7 times best player twice.played 3 games with vic country listed in best players twice.played 1 final with echuca listed in best players. not a bad 6\7 games streak.

will never be a four minute miler so lacks athleticism.needs to improve.but this can be achieved.
very slight in the body but is clever enough to not get overly involved in body on body contests. in all pioneers games gave away 10-15 kg but didn't get beaten very often over a game.

greatest strength thinks like a footballer.hits targets 85% of the time that stat from pioneers records.tackes a good mark o/head.

on the above stats deserves a chance just hope he gets one.

I know its only a small space in time, but i saw every match at the U18 champs this year and Kirkby was by far the most impressive KPP over the three days - id say he would have come a close second in the Larke medal to Smith.

His style of running is almost like a fast power walk - looks pretty awkward and he is not fast at all. But his hands are super-sticky, he would have taken a good 3-5 strong pack marks in each game - which was usually against someone roughly his same height, but a lot heavier. His kicking was super impressive for such a tall bloke

Whether he could convert this impressive marking ability to the AFL would seem the question that the recruiters were unsure of - even so, I`m baffled as to why he was overlooked - he could become anything once he has had a year or two locked in the gym.

Thanks for the wrap up mate.

Hope he mates his way to Punt Road.

Looking at the players drafted and those that weren't, I think the clubs are nervous about taking a guy who relies on taking contested marks. As you say Kirkby caught the eye because of his pack marks.

I suppose the feeling is that getting the ball less than 10 times a match isn't enough and a CHF needs to get chest marks while running away from his opponent and also needs to find it at ground level. If he doesn't he won't be too effective at AFL level where the contested mark is a last resort.

Undoubtedly a good player but I wonder whether clubs might want to see a bit more of him before they commit. I saw him twice this year, once he was good, once he was ordinary in my opinion.

Also, with due respect to Bendigo, they had a pretty ordinary year and it may not have been too hard to appear regularly in their best if you can play a bit.

A rookie spot would give him a chance to prove that he really has what it takes and I hope he gets one.

Can't agree with that at all.

in the matches i saw him (mentioned above) he got a lot more than 10 possies (probably more around the 20 mark), and took his fair share of marks up the ground too

agreed.I don't have the stats but at a guess i bet he had more of the pill than say Willets during the carnival. It's a bit of a dubious argument to suggest he wasn't picked becaue he can only take pack marks.I think it's more that he's an awkward size and that maybe recruiters see his carnival as a possible flash in the pan seeing that he hadn't shown a heap previously.

I'm still hoping we snag him.Glad to see he's down at Punt Road.I thought between he and Roughehad they controlled the 2nd match against S.A.
