If i had to rate a list of my top 50 movies then not one would be an australian movie. If a had a top 200 i might get 2 in. Thats incredibly sad.
Sad..that you don’t rate any Australian movies. Or sad that Australian movies aren’t up there?

I am one who likes to rank things. A few years back I assembled my top 100 all time favourite songs on my iPod. Some would say you can’t list songs like that but I did, and my No.1 back then is still my favourite.

Its good if you can rank your favorites and enjoy them still for all time, but I find if I make a list I keep remembering more songs and have to add to it, I would go to probably hundreds of songs. Lots of different styles of music too.

Can a fan of The Castle answer this question for me please? Are we supposed to be laughing with them, or at them?

In no particular order - 10

The Big Steal. Gordon Farkas just kills me every time.
The interview. Very solid movie. Hugo Weaving is superb.
The Boys.
Gallipoli.
Alexandras project.
Wolf Creek.
Animal Kingdom.
Kenny.
They're A Weird Mob. The final scene when they eat the meringues cracks me up.
Rabbit Proof Fence.

:thumbsu: :thumbsu: a much underappreciated movie.

I am 8 years older than Claudia Karvan. It seemed weird at the time, as she was 18, but I had a crush on her for about 6 months after I saw that movie.

Don’t think you were alone there.

And yeah, Gordon Farkas: “Look at the **** on that bloke”.

My favourite Australian films directed by women:

1. The Babadook (Jennifer Kent)
2. Malcolm (Nadia Tass)
3. High Tide (Gillian Armstrong) <-- Claudia Karvan's best film by far
4. Forbidden Lie$ (Anna Broinowski)
5. The Last Days of Chez Nous (Gillian Armstrong)
6. Love Serenade (Shirley Barrett)
7. Holy Smoke! (Jane Campion) <-- Kiwi director but Aussie film
8. Blessed (Ana Kokkinos)
9. South Solitary (Shirley Barrett)
10. Head On (Ana Kokkinos)
HM: Bedevil (Tracey Moffatt); The Black Balloon (Elissa Down); Looking for Alibrandi (Kate Woods); The Sunnyboy (Kate Harrison); Proof (Jocelyn Moorhouse), The Big Steal (Nadia Tass), Dating the Enemy (Megan Simpson Huberman), Somersault (Cate Shortland)

My Top 10

Mad Max - Worldwide Cult classic that started a new Genre
The Castle - As aussie as you can get for the time
Picnic at hanging rock - hauntingly artistic masterpiece
Chopper - Eric Bana nailed the character, great crime film
Wake in Fright - Brutal potrait of the ugly side of Australia
The Proposition - Under rated Western
Gallipoli - Seminal Australian war film
Two Hands - Another great crime flick
Red Dog - Probably showing my WA Bias but loved this
Romper Stomper - Russell Crowe as Hando

At them.

Bit of a bump but only just seen this thread. I came to the realisation about 2-3 years ago that The Castle is one of the most elitist movies you will ever come across. I don't care that it is, I still like the movie. But I can't think of one joke that isn't "punching down". Maybe Daryl calling the opposing barrister a dickhead. But at best that's pretty neutral.

Wolf creek is the best and scariest horror film I’ve ever seen. It was incredibly confronting because it was the first real horror I’d seen based in Australia. Not to mention Mick Taylor is a really believable villain. It was all very real and scary. It was done really well.

Lantana was great. Rabbit proof fence also great. Noise also.
